So I was thinking...What's after the internet? What would be the next step in integrating people and unifying individuals around the world?
Phones were a huge step, then cell phones, now internet. The internet gave way to forums and blogs, so what more can happen? I was thinking that maybe programs that convert basic phrases into another language so then you could talk to a person from another country without having to know another and language and without having to do more than type.... But no, that wouldn't really be special. We have programs that can so now...Maybe not as sophisticated, but essentially the same idea. It occured to me, however...That virtually, the internet is a new frontier. People own land, we explore sea and space....but we just exist on the web. What if countries bought their own "webs" and offered certain programs and activities to people from those countries, and people from another country might have to pay to access a translated version. You know how some things end in .com, .uk, .jp, etc...Well what if a japanese site affiliated with Japan offered email accounts similar to Gmail or better and maybe it even linked up with some kind of GPS (Anything really, that you could imagine to be something people would want)...well, you'd have to pay to access it, because you're not working from a japanese server. But if you did pay, say they would not only give you access to those things, but maybe even discounts (with no strings attached) to come visit the country. So instead of 2,000 dollars it might only cost you 1,500 or maybe even 1,000 or something. Virtual countries. Virtual marketing. It would truly make it a world wide web. |

Privatizing a whole country's internet? Sounds like a winner, you should get with Al Gore and make this baby a reality... erm... a virtuality.

Why is it that you assume the next logical step in the new frontier is nationalizing it and turning it into something evil.
I rather like the large disjointed unorganized den of orgy that the internet already is. |

After the internet is the grid, they've just set it up, there was a thread on the hype about it and how you can download a film in seconds.
The next step in technology will getting users to interface with each other in a more advanced format than text and simply puttin up videos. There will be real time interaction with others and the ability to transport things to each other. |

Speaking of a holodeck, running two in synch with someone across the world so their actions affect your holodeck and yours affects them could cause some true virtual reality and could have people interacting with replica constructs of one another while away.
I mean it doesn't have to replicate but could work off brainwave patterns so people who are bound by their bodies but have sounds mind could technically interact with people and things in a virtual system. Again building some sort of sensation feedback could cause a whole world of enjoyment. Your very essence could even be downloaded so the greatest minds and sports people could be summoned for ideas and help with future projects or working continuously on some project without the need for outside stimulus. anyone thinking the internet is the last frontier clearly doesn't watch enough sci-fi |

Maybe it will be like "Ghost in the Shell"? Where people have cyber brains and can access information and what not in their mind. That would be COOOOOL, but also dangerous.

Holodeck will only succeed against its competitor iHolograms if the porn industry backs it.

I'm meeting a girl this weekend from the Internet. I'm planning on stealing my brothers car so I can travel to see her. I'm going to bring my two friends along with me too. Only thing is, I pasted my head onto a athletics guys body so it's going to be kinda awkward.

I say, instead of using the keyboard to prevent sore wrists and what not, how about um...lets say Im chatting with someone via MSN, well instead of typing, the computer could recognize my voice and whatever I say can be translated into the communication box and all I have to do is click enter to send the message to that person.
Just say whats on your mind and the computer will pick it up and process that recording and translate it onto the screen. That'll be interesting... oh and also, instead of using the mouse, you should be able to use touch screens. that'll be awsome... I dunno...make it similiar in a way to Tony Stark's technology.
