Default David Fincher to direct '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea'

All the recent speculation surrounding McG's possible next project has now been put to rest.

McG to direct Disney's 'Nemo'
'20,000 Leagues' being fast-tracked by studio

By MICHAEL FLEMING

Disney has set McG to direct "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo," a family film that is being fast tracked by the studio.

McG, who most recently helmed "Terminator: Salvation," had multiple studios vying for his next slot. Sources said he will be paid $8 million against 7% of gross.

Sean Bailey ("Tron 2.0") is producing with McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision.

Scripted by Bill Marsilli, the film is an origin story of Nemo as he creates his warship, the Nautilus. The characters come from the Jules Verne novel.

The 1954 original "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" was the first live-action film made by Walt Disney, who famously bet his studio on a movie best remembered for the giant squid scene. It became the second-highest grossing film that year and won three Oscars. The film has also been the basis for various rides at the Disney theme park over the years.

Disney hopes to make the film this year.

Warner Bros. releases "Terminator: Salvation" on May 22. Though "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" is expected to be the next film he directs, McG is in discussions to supervise development and direct the next installment of "Terminator." He also will produce through his Wonderland Sound and Vision shingle.

The helmer is repped by Endeavor and Management 360.

Should be interesting to see if they can top the original's awesome giant squid scene.

I'm beginning to suspect McG may be a deeper and more talented director than many have given him credit for.

His Terminator movie will be the key determinate. If it's as kick ass as everyone is hoping it is, then I will forgive him his past transgressions and look forward to his future projects.

Honestly, okay... 'Charlie's Angels' was over the top, it was (stupid) entertainment, but no way would I think that McG is a bad director from watching that movie. Honestly, the movie was well directed. It's 90 (nice) minutes of escapist entertainment.

I always thought this was ideal for a remake.

Well, it's been remade what...19 times? One more won't hurt, especially if it's any good.

I think McG is growing into being a fine director. Let's not forget, prior to doing Charlie's Angels he was a music video director. It's just taken him a little time to get to doing better projects. I think his Terminator is going to be fantastic, and I hope that this will be the same.

With today's effects there are so many scenes that could be jaw-dropping. The original did a fantastic job with its technology but 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, like King Kong, is a movie that with current technology could be an amazing film.

I feel, like Snyder with Watchmenm, we can finally judge on the quality of filmmaker McG really is. He's just coming into his own craft. Like anyone does.

Who Does McG Want for Captain Nemo?
Source: Latino Review
January 14, 2009

Latino Review talked to Terminator Salvation director McG, who let slip that he wants Will Smith to star in his just-announced 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo at Disney.

"The character Nemo in this film is more about obsession, he is obsessed and people tend to forget that when you become so obsessed you end up being the villain," McG told the site, adding "Man I'm trying to get Will Smith to do it, been trying to get a hold of him. I've been wanting to work with him for a long time already. That guy's great."

The film is an origin story of Nemo as he creates his warship, the Nautilus. The characters come from the Jules Verne novel.

Get what's his name from Heroes. Add a couple more high profile stars, and you're straight.

So is this response for the same reason as the Jake Gyllenhaal Prince or Persia casting ?

I just think theres an excellent crop of Indian/Middle Eastern actors dying for the role. Plus i think they should be doing an adaptation of the book instead of their own prequel to it. That way Nemos the antagonist and they can put a big actor name in the protagonist role, which in general I think would work out for the best.

is Nemo suppose to be Southern Asian/Indian?

Anyway, by getting Will Smith (nothing against him) it's too..trendy. The sad thing is that I don't expect too much from him if he does get cast. I'm not going to discount Smith as a performer, this is not the movie for him. It's almost like McG just randomly yelled out "I want Tom Cruise to be Nemo". Is there even a script? Has McG even read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?

I was under that impression. Nothing is really revealed about Nemo pre-20,000 Leagues but Im pretty sure he said he was the Hindu son of a Raja in The Myserious Island.

Well, I will confess there is a bit of a double standard going on here, because I have heard umpteen white actors being suggested in place of Smith, yet casting Gyllenhall in PoP is passable.
