to me, i think if let's say Don Chedle was cast as Nemo, I wouldn't be "OMGZ". I don't have this blind hatred for Smith, but I do think he's one of those actors that I cannot consistently like. For example, I liked Smith in Ali, but I hated Smith in "I, Robot". I know they are two different movies by two very different directors, but I've always had a love-hate relationship with the man.

I'm sure there are a number of actors capable, but I suspect this movie to be budgeted North of 100 mil, so they will want someone well known as the lead.

I wouldn't call not pissing away money lame, I mean if there was a Indian/Middle Eastern actor that was a star in North America with the qualities needed for the role, then I'd agree, but there isn't.

No, still lame. Its lame the studios only like to bet on 3 actors in all the industry. Its lame that audiences are as myopic as they are to force studios into this position.

is this is going to be based on anything? Isn't it frustrating that the character of Nemo has appeared in other books as well? There's a wealth of sources out there, for Pete's sakes.

I don't think it's a case of 3 actors at all, and when ppl are shelling out their hard earned and there is a wealth of movies on to get a spectacle fix, they are gonna see the ones where they have actually heard of the actors.

I think it's probably about time to accept that this likely isn't the "same old Captain Nemo".

Will Smith is not who I would have expected for this role. But that doesn't mean he couldn't play it...depending on what it is. I'm more interested in how the role is written than in whether an actual Indian plays Captain Nemo. And this is, to say the least, intriguing.

i agree with Rac.

I honestly can't understand how you people cen get excited for a McG movie; it's like nobody seen the two "Charlie's Angels" (which can be fun to see, why not; but would you say these are good movies ? i hope you don't)

i have the feeling that Shia Labeaouf will be Ned Land in this one:facepalm

I think disney will push for Johnny Depp or Geoffrey Rush as Nemo but Will as the lead good guy maybe.

Who Does McG Want for Captain Nemo?
Source: Latino Review
January 14, 2009

Latino Review talked to Terminator Salvation director McG, who let slip that he wants Will Smith to star in his just-announced 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo at Disney.

"The character Nemo in this film is more about obsession, he is obsessed and people tend to forget that when you become so obsessed you end up being the villain," McG told the site, adding "Man I'm trying to get Will Smith to do it, been trying to get a hold of him. I've been wanting to work with him for a long time already. That guy's great."

The film is an origin story of Nemo as he creates his warship, the Nautilus. The characters come from the Jules Verne novel.
and in the famous words of Will Smith: "Awww hellll no!"

i wasnt ok with Gylenhaal as PoP. still not. but its not a reason for me to turn PoP down come opening day. i will be taking a look at the reviews first though, which is something i dont usually do for a movie.

agreed. regardless of Nemo's ethnicity, Will Smith isnt the right actor for this. theres just something about his acting style and bearing that is a mismatch for a character like Captain Nemo.

Will Smith is a fantastic actor. I don't get the hate.

I honestly think he could do it...just give him more of a beard, not just stubble.

Disney hires new scribe for '20,000 Leagues'
Justin Marks will rewrite adventure pic's draft script

By Jay A. Fernandez
Feb 11, 2009, 10:27 PM ET

"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo" has a new navigator.

While the captain remains director McG ("Terminator: Salvation"), screenwriter Justin Marks has been brought on to rewrite Bill Marsilii's draft script for Disney's big-budget underwater adventure.

Sean Bailey is producing through his Idealogy Inc., along with McG. Jeanne Allgood is executive producing.

Marks has been hired as a "world builder" to fill out the deep-sea universe in this action-adventure based on the 1954 film "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," which was an adaptation of Jules Verne's classic novel. As the new "Leagues" moves toward preproduction, Marks has four weeks to work with McG and craft designers to expand the film's world to the scale of a tentpole extravaganza.

Marks, repped by WMA and Madhouse Entertainment, wrote the screenplay for the Fox actioner "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li," due Feb. 27 in domestic theaters. He also has "Hack/Slash," "Masters of the Universe" and "Voltron" in development.

So when are we going to hear Will Smith signing on to this?

EXCL- 20000 leagues under Australia!!!
Hollywood returns Down under

There was a time there where Australia was the place to go to make movies. When there was Star Wars prequels and the Matrix trilogy all kicking ass at the box office but then it sort of died away. Then the fear came when George miller couldn’t get tax breaks for the doomed Justice League film. Obviously there were films like Ghost Rider (A Texas location with Gum trees??) and self titled Australia (you couldn’t really do that anywhere else) but i wasn't really excited??.
This coming year will change that and it is a great time for the Aussie film industry as big productions are coming down again. First off it seems that Green Lantern will be down here and according to a source it will filming around Melbourne’s Avalon airport for up to 6 weeks doing Hal Jordan’s test pilot scenes. If Narnia makes it back to screen it is talk that they will be back down here around Queensland or Sydney. But the cool thing we have learnt from our friend is that 20000 leagues under the sea will also head it’s way down here and rumour has it will start filming at the end of this year. This is on the fast track and if Will Smith signs on then expect McG’s version of the classic tale to be priority number one for Disney. Aussie, Aussie Aussie oi oi oi

So how exactly are they going to get McG on a plane to australia

They should get the indian actor who played the game show host in Slumdog Millionaire for Nemo, he was great, and maybe keep Will Smith (a pretty good actor too actually)in the Kirk Douglas role. Anyway, I'd rather see Moby Dick with Viggo Mortensen as Ahab.

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA
Oh man , seriously...THat cracked me up. As someone who has watched Bollywood movies all his life , there couldn't possibly be a worse actor to play Nemo then Anil Kapoor ( the game show host).

Let's face it. Accents that "dont" fit in movies instantly turn off the audience. Many indian actors are very good english speakers , the problem is that their accent are instantly recognisable . Nemo is guy who commands authority , so the last thing you want is someone sounding like APU from the simpsons. Personally i feel that it's better to go with indian actors who were clasically trained like Ben Kingsley ( well technically he's a half indian). These are people who , if they want , can sound like indian people but without a thick accent.
Heck i might get flamed for this but if you do want to cast a bollywood actor , get the guy who played Cap. Nemo in LXG ( Nasserruddin Shah).

But again i seriously doubt that Hollywood is going with casting an indian actor for the role . LEt;s face it. This is going to be an very expensive movie and you need a bankable star.

The only people complaining that Nemo needs to be played by an indian-looking actor , are fanboys and possibly indians.
The general public doesn't give a rat's ass about this . THis isn't on the same level as say superman being played by a black guy . That would get ALOT of people pissed. This is nothing
