Yes, because you edited your post where you originally recommened Dark Knight Returns, which was the post I was responding to.

It was black comedy. He feels that books have become too serious and moody in an attempt to be cool. GLA is hardly serious and moody, therefore...I WIN HA! HA!

I really only buy hardcovers if I'm going to buy them collected. Ummmm...so for Daredevil I'd rec Daredevil Vol.2 HC. Its the start of Bendis' run and its amazing.

Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller Vols. 2 and 3.
Yeah, Bendis' stuff is great, but Miller's defined the character and still stands up, even 20 years later.
And yes, I know that's more than one, but you won't regret it.

I don't know much about the Bendis and Brubaker Daredevil runs. "The Winter Soldier" is the start of a what is fast becoming the definitive Captain America run (certainly the best in a long time), and I can't recommend it more highly. Astonishing X-Men is a very good X-Men series; strong characterization and dialogue are the highlights, although the scope of the stories is often a bit slight.

I agree with most of that, but I disagree with Thor: Vikings.

It's a good fun read, but if you are looking for something essential o the character, then it's not the way to go.

Default Recommend me something...

I don't really know a whole lot about Marvel. I sparingly read a little bit of New Mutants and X-factor back in the day, but since then I've kind of steered towards DC but more towards Vertigo in terms of graphic novels since the stories tend to be more self-contained. There's the odd Epic comics I liked, but for whatever reason none of them are in trade format (which is a shame because most were pretty much as good as a lot of the Vertigo trades).

So could somebody please recommend me something? One Marvel graphic novel or trade paperback which'll knock my socks off (in the same way DC people always recommend Dark Knight Returns or Batman Year One). I don't care about books collecting 'event/crossover' storylines because I don't know anything about Marvel characters. I'm looking for a book which is designed to be read on its own without knowing anything about the Marvel 'universe' beyond a little bit about its core characters.

I've heard Runaways is good but am yet to pick it up... Any suggestions?

Either way I'll have to check those out. Is alias a spinoff of the tv series?
Which of those would you think might be the cheapest? I'll probably splurge at some point, but I want to start with something fairly inexpensive so even If I don't like it, it wont feel like wasted money?
