Is the recent story Infinity any good? I was thinking of pre-ordering the trade.

It's a mixed bag for me but seems to be liked overall. It's not exactly new reader friendly, but if you're patient you can figure it out. Also, you'll have to read the Infinity event, Avengers, and New Avengers for the full story. Unlike previous events where the core mini can stand alone, Infinity doesn't. Each issue is 'to be continued' into Avengers and New Avengers, and then those endings are 'to be continued' into Infinity.

It does have fantastic art though. All three titles.

Thanks for the reply!

By Infinity event, I take it you mean Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War?

Infinity is totally separate from the original Infinity Trilogy you are referring to (Gauntlet/War/Crusade).

Is Secret Avengers good? I've been kind of curious about it, but I found the whole memory wipe thing pretty lame and took it as a sign that it would be more of a glorification of terrible people doing terrible things rather than anything worthy of the Avengers name. Is that the case, or is it worth reading?

SHIELD is appropriately portrayed as morally ambiguous and the book's competently written, with good pacing and an interesting plot, but it's Avengers in name only. So really, it depends on whether or not you're into plot heavy espionage stories and political dramas. If you're looking for a more traditional Avengers book that focuses on the superheroes, Secret's not for you.

Does anybody even question the morality of the memory wipes and such? Or is it all hardcore SHIELD spies who are gung-ho about using and discarding people that way? I'm not really a fan of morally ambiguous characters being passed off as heroes in general, but I can get into it if there's some discussion of the moral implications going on in the narrative. Like Captain America getting all up in Wolverine's grill about his child-killing days with X-Force in Uncanny Avengers, or the Illuminati booting Cap out because he objected to the idea of murdering whole worlds in New Avengers, or the Avengers all having different perceptions of the Punisher's methods in Punisher: War Zone.

SHIELD hasn't been directly challenged but neither have they been portrayed as heroes, and there's indication that Bobbi, Clint, at al. will find out about their shady dealings eventually.

Hmm. All right, thanks for the info. I think I might finally get around to reading Secret Warriors and then check Secret Avengers out. I've heard they kind of complement each other.

What are some great Thor and Cap trades that I can pick up? I became a fan of those characters through the movies and Avengers: EMH.

For Cap I'm not too sure what's out there but for recent stuff, go with Brubaker's run that started in 05 and finished up last year.

For older Cap stuff, during Mark Gruenwald's decade long run there's anything related to the Cap Quits Saga (not sure what's been released in trade form for that), The Bloodstone Hunt (an Indiana Jones style global adventure that introduced the villain Crossbones) and Streets of Poison (a drug war story that has Cap mixing it up with street level folks like DD and the Kingpin).

There's also pretty much anything Mark Waid did during his 2 runs.

Thor, the obvious choices are the Walt Simonson run, which is being re printed (meaning I can finally get the final volume of it), and Straczynski's run, since I think those two make up the bulk of what the movie's are based off of.

But, Thor Epic Collection, which I'm reading right now, is really awesome.

Is Hickman's Fantastic Four good? I found a deal on some trades, but wanted to hear from some of the knowledgeable readers here before splurging.

I've not read a lot of either's ongoings, but the trade for Captain America: the New Deal was awesome. I recommend that. It contains the first 6 issues of one of his titles dealing with the aftermath of September 11th. It's stand alone.

I didn't really care for it. It was typical Hickman, long and drawn out....but I'm also not the biggest FF fan in the world.

That's why I can't knock anyone for not being into his current Avengers run. There's a lot going on all over the place but I'm a huge Avengers fan and I'm glad the book is free of Bendis so I deal with it.

Heh, you remind me of fans of X-Men when Gischler started his title. It wasn't Fraction's military X-Men, so people flocked. It didn't take long for that appeal to wear off, but it's the same general principle.

How is Hickman's run on Avengers and Infinity? While i never read it i remember being very interested in his run with Fantastic Four, really liked the idea of the FF title, and i read and loved his run on Ultimate Comics: The Ultimates

Yeah, I was one of those people. I had high hopes for Gischler's X-Men run.

Was the X-men Gold worth picking up? They wanted six bucks for it but I let it pass. Now I found out Gambit's on the cover. Did anyone buy it and was it worth the six bucks?

X-men: Gold was alright. Not sure it was worth the six bucks. Like other specials with little short stories it was hit and miss. For me the highlight was a story about what was going through Wolverine's head when he first met the group of X-men from Giant-Size X-men #1. With Claremont and (Stan)Lee writing it was definitely for fans of the old school X-men.

Sorry, Squeek, no Gambit. Just on the cover. He was in the background in a couple panels, but that doesn't count. Like I said, old school X-men.
