The school system itself is a sham if you ask me. When I was in high school up to 2003 when I graduacted I saw plenty of teammates who had cheat sheets and everything provided to them in order to pass test to be able to play and in one case even get a scholarship.
They just closed up another 4 schools here in maryland due to poor grades on a consistent basis and now all those inner city kids have to go somewhere else because the teachers were too lazy. |

Have any of you guys heard about the book 'Class Warfare', about the enemies of Education reform?
Here's an excellent NYT review: Quote:

I've posted in this thread about the Sudbury Model of education before. I just wanted to share two new videos that give a little insight into how sudbury schools are run:

All I know is, anyone who believes that teachers have it bad, are simply misinformed.
At my old high school (a poor one, mind you), the top 5 teachers' salaries were 52km 60k, 62k, 65k, and get this - 81,000 a year. They held a rally outside during school hours to protest the fact that they would have to spend $30 a month for healthcare instead of the original $15. ![]() Even the students were outraged.

Shouldn't corporations be banned for holding fundraisers in schools were they make majority of the profits, donate little to the students, and make the kids do all of the selling and delivery the orders just to get some cheap toys and gifts that can be found made in china. I notice baked goods producers love to do this every year, especially near Christmas to sell fruit cakes and more. Aren't school districts being manipulated into being the market place and labor for for making a profit for some of these companies?

The thing about teachers' salaries is that they don't increase like most other jobs. Once you start teaching, you're pretty much locking in your salary for your career, unlike most jobs that have an annual raise based on performance. No matter how good you are, you get paid the same as the ****** teachers. Teachers get shafted a lot. Especially when everybody talks about how children are the future, and these kids' entire educations are dependent on their teachers.

48k is awesome. Especially if that's one person's income aside from their spouse.
If a combined household income between husband and wife is close to 100k a year, you're doing quite alright.

I never said we weren't doing alright, and yeah, 48k is a good salary. But it's the growth that's the problem. She's been getting paid the same amout for 15 years. Which isn't right, considering how good she is and how hard she works.
Sadly, in order to increase teacher's pay would pretty much mean an increase in taxes. Which you'll be hard pressed to find somebody in favor of.

One issue is that Unions are so politically motivated, especially for Democrats. This is one reason they are getting so much funding in the lastest job's bill Obama wants the House to pass. It's an election but kisser.

Here are two links that I find interesting and sum up my views on education:
The first one is from RSA VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
The second is a blog called Freedom to Learn, written by an evolutionary psychologist named Dr. Peter Gray: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/freedom-learn He's a specific entry that I like a lot: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/...onary-mismatch

The education system is completely broken....I feel bad for my future child who will have to go through it. From what I can tell, there really isn't all that being done to fix it. We just keep shoving money at it hoping it'll fix itself.

There are some things that appeal to me (some things about mixing ages and so on), but a couple of things that bother me as well. One of the primary tasks of a school, IMHO, is to prepare the student for life outside of acadamia. And life outside of acadamia has a number of things that are completely different from the way you describe the school. In most work settings, some entity (be it a person or a committee) is in charge, making the decisions. Although folks may have a voice, the reality is that one person's voice is not often held in the same respect as anyone elses. I will listen to my doctor's opinion about my health more than I will the numb nutz in the next cube who just subscribed to macrobiology monthly and has wonderful ideas.
In the real world, there are any number of 'tests'. We don't always call them this, but they are, indeed, tests. Performance reviews, audits, monitoring, etc. Hell, for many jobs these days, you have to take a test. (various types). if you've never experienced that, how do you prepare? |

Those things you talk about should be taught at home, and reinforced at school.....
