Am I the only one who missed the score from the first film. I saw IM2 last night and don't really remember any of the orchestrated music after it was over. I only remember the rock songs they used.

I really missed the themes of the first movie. The score wasn't bad on it's own, but it was very forgettable. I hate when sequels jettison the previous films' themes. Iron Man deserves a theme as prominent, memorable, and consistent as Batman, Superman, or Spider-Man.

I loved the score/theme used in Iron Man and it was noticeably absent in this film. This is one of my only complaints.

Starting around 30 seconds....this theme was really missed and awesome for the feel for the first film.

Starting at 2:15 about....

Also played while he suits up in the Mark II armor for the first time.

there were some themes in IM2 though. It's hard to hear over the SFX, but I have the score (it leaked ) and in the movie there were. the Mark 1 theme was variated in the opening credits

On second viewing I tried to pay a bit more attention to the score. To be honest, by the time the film was over I already forgot a lot of it, I didn't find it that memorable. The one piece of music I really liked was what was playing when Ivan is making his suit.

I really do miss some of the rock music from the first film, mainly that one theme when he's first suiting up in the Mark II for his test flight.

I didn't care for Debney's score, really. It didn't stand out compared to the much more different score for a superhero movie Dwadji made.

I know I heard a darker version of the theme when Tony was building the MK I, when Ivan was finishing up the Whiplash MK I. That part of the score stuck out for me.

I found the score forgettable as well and it brought the grade of the movie down. I can't remember a single theme from that movie. A good musical score would have bumped the movie up from an 8 to a 9.

What makes me mad is the lack of an Iron Man theme. I'm telling you..just use Black Sabbath (get permission of course) and remix with a live orchestra (but keep the guitar riff)

I think the Iron Man score was much better. The excerpts you mention above, particularly in "Driving with the top down" are far more memorable than Iron Man 2. The part where he's suiting up at 30 seconds brings a sense of excitement and anticipation that something is about to happen and he's going to explode into action. The other part used when he test drives the Mark II for the first time and is soaring about really brings a sense of exhilaration that almost enables you to experience that same thrill. That is absent entirely from Iron Man 2 but could've been used when he was creating the new element. The Iron Man score would've brought a sense of consistency and would've cemented those themes as an Iron Man melody.

The thing is though, there are some of these types of scenes (or the scene at Gulmera/ fighting the fighter jets) which are absent themselves from Iron Man 2. The 2nd act could've benefited from them.

Also, Black Sabbath's Iron Man should've been used at the end of the film instead of AC/DC's Highway to Hell. What's the reason for that song just because AC/DC are releasing a greatest hits album of theirs with an Iron Man theme?

The part from 00:30 on is my favorite bit from the IM1 score. Yeah, I wish it would have been in IM2 as well(well at least I didn't hear it in there) but I still liked the IM2 score.

so listening to a standalone debney vs. djawadi, I might have to go for the first film's score. Debney did a GREAT job though, and there are some awesome tracks, like Iron Man Battles The Drones (it's gonna be 25 tracks, 73 minute release btw) but Ramin did a slightly better job.

Still love both scores though, they're great stuff

Any reason why they ditched Ramin Djawadi? His score was way better.

I'm loving how people are preferring the score to the first film more. I'm not trying to knock the score to the sequel but I remember so many people hating on the first film's score when the movie came out which I didn't get. I thought it fit the film well.

The Iron Man score was just another generic Zimmer clone. I much preferred Debney's score and can't wait to buy it.

I thought the score this time around was pretty good. Not great, not amazing. But Debney is capable of writing GREAT music, whereas Djawadi has never written anything of substance in his entire short career (IMO of course). His scores mostly consist of regurgitating the stock action music/Zimmer style that most of you have become accustomed to over the past decade of blockbuster films as many of them have been scored by Zimmer or one of his cohorts.

I was one who really disliked the first score, and thought it actually took away from the movie. It was annoying, and the "theme" was a joke IMO. That's not a theme. It may have been memorable, but that doesn't make it of any substance. Anyways I don't want to make this an anti-Zimmer rant, so I'll get onto what I thought about Debney's score (or whatever I could hear of it in the film).

The opening cue, of whiplash building his suit, was far better than anything in Djawadi's score. Debney apparently had the choir (real choir mind you, not synth choir like the first score) singing in Russian, which is pretty darn cool. So right off the bat, he beats the first score in my book. Then there are certain scenes that I clearly recalled the score (opening titles scene, black widow in Hammer's facility, the entire Monaco scene, Tony "redecorating" with that badass guitar riff which I assume was Tom Morello, when Tony discovers what he's looking for, and certain sections of the final fight sequence) that were memorable to me. The problem was ultimately the sound mix, and perhaps the constant re-edits on this film, which could clearly be seen by the off-pacing throughout the entire second act. Like I read somewhere, it felt like a 3 hour movie edited down to just over 2. A 74 minute CD actually shocks me because I don't remember hearing near close to 74 minutes of original score in the movie, which is a darn shame as Debney probably wrote A LOT of music that wasn't used for whatever reason, or was muddled under the ridiculously loud sound fx, especially in the Drones sequence. The sound mix just didn't help AT ALL. And like I said, that's an indication of constant re-edits. Apparently the score was recorded in Feb. which means that the main sequences and editing SHOULD have been put together in time for the composer to tailor their music to the scene, but when it seems you're frantically trying to piece together the picture for the film, and when tracks are written that no longer tailor any scene, they are either chopped into bits to make it work, or just not used altogether. The music definitely takes a back seat in these situations.

I think Debney was put in a tough spot. Try to keep some of the elements of the first score, electric guitar, drums when necessary, but expand on that into a more orchestral realm. And he probably had to follow Favreau's instructions to the t. There's not much freedom for composers on these big blockbuster movies.

This post by Maestro Z on Film Score Monthly pretty much sums up how I feel about the score (not the film, but the score): The 4th post down. Favreau basically told Debney to tone it down, which is not what Debney is really known for. I think he did a fine job, it was definitely an upgrade, but no masterpiece. And not to mention the fact that while Djawadi's score was released to coincide with the first film's release, Debney's score get pushed back until July in favor of a "Best of.." AC/DC & Iron Man marketing scheme. A shame really, as big bombast IS Debney's specialty, and that should have been present here all over the movie, but sadly it wasn't.

Much preferred the score in Iron Man 1 to this one, I really do hate it when sequels change the score from the 1st movie to the 2nd as there is nothing better than sitting down to watch a sequel and hearing that familiar music from the 1st movie.

Wish they would have kept IM's score, especially a lot of what was used in the final battle.

The only track I liked was the music played when Tony goes into "hardware mode" and builds the particle accelator. Whatever that rock music was during the montage was great.

Anyone know what track that is?

I don't really know Debney's other work but I get the idea he had his hands tied on this one. It sounded to me like bad 1970's low budget, superhero TV show music. The score was one of my gripes about this one.
