Default Wheel of Time Series

Has anybody read the wheel of time books by Robert Jordan? The Corpulent1 told me about them and i'm on book 3 now and they are stellar so far. It's sort of like Lord of the rings but different and much longer. I just found out the author died two years ago and last book should be coming out soon.

Ramore,

I admit, the first 5 books are awesome, but they slowly start to decline a little bit. I don't know if success go to him, or due to his wearing health at the time since he was going to Mayo. But they do stand up pretty good overall, tho.

The last book? The jury is still out on that, but there is some faith due fact that Harriet, his wife is still alive, and she was his editor so to speak and most of the book and notes we're done.

For American Series, it's the best that's been created, IMO. But I've really waned away from it since my teenage years. It's just not as "Top Notch" as it use to be, or I've changed. It's still worth reading, IMO.

G'Luck,
Ali

My friend told me about this and said that someone is finishing up the final book for the late author. He says around book 9 it starts to go a little downhill but he strongly recommended the series.

Brandon Sanderson is the name of the author who is finishing the last novel. Personally I got bored with the Wheel of Time-series after book six.

I would have waited at least until a release date comes out for the final book(s). The series is great for the first 6, declines in 7 - 8, a good book in 9, 10 being my least favorite and number 11 having some good points to it.

Number 12, A Memory of Light, will hopefully wrap up at least the main points of the story.

I love WoT. Drags a lot around 8-10, but I remember thinking 11 was great (been a couple of years since I've read them). Jordan is really fantastic at world building and writing point of view from all the different characters, giving each of them a very distinguishable feel and mannerisms.

They're looking at a November '09 release. But they're not sure if they'll have to split it into 2 volumes as it might be too big in one. Sanderson's estimating a 750,000 final word count, so that's gonna be a big mother*****er!

Red Eagle Entertainment have also started working on a film adaptation, so I hope that works out well.

And unrelated but, I picked up the first book of "A Song of Ice and Fire" by G.R.R. Martin over the weekend. I had heard a lot of praise for it and had been meaning to get it for ages. I'll get it started in the next few days.

I would hold off on Martin as it is a long wait in between books.

Pretty much i've talked to has the "it started to drag or get convaluted around issue x" comment. Being on Book three there seems to be a ream movement to conclusion but with many side stories. I can see myself getting frustrated probably by book 5 that it's not freaking finished yet I love how Jordan as one of you put write's each character so distinctly and with a different voice.

I've read them. I like them for the most part but like everyone else it does begin to get bogged down around book 4/5. To me he lost the main plot and them and started getting side tracked with all the little side stories. He seemed to get back on track around book 10 or 11 (It's been awhile)
To be honest I would end up skimming over parts that seemed redundant or just another view of the same parts or scenarios from previous books.

The unfortunate thing is whether this will ever be finished as Robert Jordan did pass away (as many joked he would) before actually finishing the series. I have heard they've tapped someone to finish it (don't remember who) but who knows when that'll kick off.

I can't wait....you think Rand will end up being the true hero or that he was a lark for someone else like Matt.

I read the first 3 books in about 10 days. Jordan's greatest talent seems to be in world building and consistency in his storytelling from page to page. There are very few lows throughout the books, unfortunately there aren't that many highs either. The characters are good but not great but can best be described as pretty bland. The dialogue isn't much better. There's nothing that I would necessarily criticize as being bad but nothing to necessarily praise either. It's better than most book series I've read but it lacks personality. There doesn't appear to be any excitement or joy in the words of the story. I tend to WOT gets too much praise but then I look at fantasy books as a whole and I see why.

Yees, he does have a talent for world building. I'm on around page 500 of The Great Hunt, and Mat's annoying me. Is he being a prick because of that dagger from Shadar Logoth, or is this just who he becomes?

The dagger is not neutral.....but you need to read on to find out

Really I find it better than Lord of the Rings for me. I see what you mean about world building but I find his characters to be very enduring if not sometimes simple.

I'm halfway through book three and addicted I 'm at the same time reading the prequel which sort of makes a good compliment to three so far. I think reading it any earlier would have muddled things in my head.

Matt just took on Elayne to brothers and trounced them Strange that sometimes new things develop rather quickly without too much foundation. If Matt was that good with a staff he should have bragged earlier, the same thing with his dice and luck when him and Rand were on the run he should have gambled one a bunch until they thought he was cheating or something. Instead the first if hear of him owning dice and being really good was this book.

You may be right. It may be better than LOTR but since I've never read those books I can't say. All I know is that Jordan's books really lack energy and the fact that each book is so long makes it all the worse.

I love that scene. He was barely able to stand too
If I remember correctly Emonds Field has tournaments during their festivals, Archery, quarterstaff, etc, and those two mentioned were usually won by either Tam or Abel Cauthon. So Mat had a very good teacher.

Mats enhanced luck is a result being bound to the dagger for so long, the luck was again amplified when the Aes Sedai separated him from the dagger.
Wait till you see the peculiar...... things.... he acquires in the Aiel Waste.....
Mat has a great arc through the series, turns out to be one of my favourite characters.

I really disagree about the characters being bland and it lacking personality.
Maybe you think that because you flew through it so fast and missed a lot? There's a lot of foreshadowing in this series, which I think RJ pulls off brilliantly.
Or maybe you just don't like it, which is cool.

It'll definitely be Rand that saves the world, whether the population of Randland might see it differently is another matter. Logain may end up getting the credit.
Which is another aspect of the series I think is great. The telling and re-telling of stories which change with each telling, like a game of Whispers. RJ makes a point to note that several times.
So as the people look back when the Last Battle is over, it could very well be Logain or Narishma or even Thom that the people see as their savior because the story will have changed so much.

I'm a very slow reader so that is doubtful. The characters simply weren't very compelling.

I would agree with you their and I actually think Logain will be hailed as the Dragon. I don't think anything major will come of Narishma. I am however wondering if there will be some type of body switch and Rand's current body becoming an empty shell. What do you think?

I've seen a few theories like that. It could happen I suppose.
It seems there will at least be a faking of Rands death, what with Egwene's dreams and Mins viewings.

Did you hear about Red Eagle Entertainment adapting WoT into a series of films?

Yes I have but I am not really too hopeful given what is happening with the Sowrd of Truth series.

Do you think it will be faithful at least as much as the LOTR movies were or do you think it will be extremely loosely based on the books?

In any case, they wre talking about just doing Eye of the World.
