I'm curious-and confused- is Captain America's old enemy The Red Skull still an ideological Nazi or he is now a nihilist?
Please clarify! Terry |

I'm not certain but if memory serves me correctly he has gone back and forth. I'm pretty sure in his last story he was a Nazi.

Nihilism isn't a belief or political system. It basically states that life has no true purpose or meaning. Some nihilists also don't believe in any type of morality. Its pretty much the complete opposite of Nazi fascism. Nihilists would consider attempting to control and dominate others petty and pointless.

The Red Skull though has never been a true nihilist IMO. He always retains some fascist sensibilities.

Ledger's Joker is the absolute version of nihilism. He doesn't believe in any political system nor in humanity because they are flawed, corrupted and doesn't have any true purpose or meaning. Quite different from the Red Skull character. Red Skull is a strong supporter of the classical "pyramidal system". (of course with him at the top of the pyramid) So he can't be a nihilist, because a nihilist rejects all political system which are all unworthy.

on that note, I am curious to see how the toys will come out-- Like the recent Indiana Jones toys that came out in the aftermath of the "crystal skull" movie, there was stuff based on the earlier movies produced, and they removed the swastikas and references to "Nazi", they were all now simply "German soldiers", which is accurate enough, technically, but I think Hasbro wanted to avoid being accused of promoting Nazism, so the same thing will probably happen with the Captain America toys.. |

I remember a comic where Magneto chases down Red Skull because he was involved in the Holocaust which killed Magneto's family.
So yeah I'm pretty sure he's a Nazi. |

I don't know if this helps but in my Marvel Encyclopedia vol 1 it says "changed by years of battles with Captain America, the Red Skull denounced Nazism as an outdated philosophy and adopted anarchy as his cause. As the Red Skull sees it, in a world without governments, the powerful will rule the weak."

I think he is now more of an anarchist than a nazi. He seems more into causing chaos than furthering a political agenda.
Dont consider him anywhere near a nihilist though. |

Say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.
