Surely not a dealbreaker, but I'm a little disappointing that there'll be no drunk Tony. Maybe we'll still see hints of it, just not the full-blown descent in alcoholism.

With War Machine, Black Widow, Whiplash, and Justin Hammer being introduced in this film, he's probably right that it's best saved.
A Demon in the Bottle/Mandarin Iron Man 3, though? Hell yes |

I want to see it in some form or another, I hope they don't leave it out. On one hand I want to see it soon, on the other, I want it to be done justice.

At least let him have a couple drinks more than in the first movie. Just show that he gradually starts to drink more.

The gradual progression would be best. The theme is definitely something that should get representation. A depiction of Tony increasingly comforting himself with a few drinks, especially in dealing with the pressures of being Shellhead (as well as running Stark Industries) would be excellent in giving weight to an emotionally-invested Demon storyline in IM3.

The fact that he said "not really" instead of just "no" gives me hope that they might hint at it a bit.
I'll be happy with waiting for the full story as long as it's done well.

Slightly disappointing to hear and I'm actually a bit surprised. Typically the second film in superhero franchises are darker and is usually where it all goes to **** for the hero. Not saying that it still can't happen, but I was sort of expecting to see the downward spiral in this film take place by having a decent sized reference to DIAB.
Regardless, I'm looking forward to whatever it is Favs has planned for this film. |

I agree it's a good thing. Sometimes CBMs try to pack in way too many storylines (IE Cure+Dark Phoenix Saga in X3), and it results in a watered-down version of something that could be great. They've obviously got ideas for the movie, no need to pack in Demon in a Bottle too.

Too bad, but at least it shows that RDJ /Favs/Marvel are not in a "kill the golden goose" mode like other studios(FOX/Sony). They seem to want this to be a long-term thing rather than a flash in the pan that they can quickly cash in on. Oh if FOX had done this regarding the Dark Phoenix & Galactus storylines and Sony had done this ragarding the whole symbiote/venom storyline. It breaks the heart to think of what could've been epic and was just watered down and rushed.

Yeah I think that if they hint at it, it'll be okay.
But I dont know if I want to see RDJ falling down the stairs drunk. That might be a little too far.

Exactly, he did quite the bit of drunk superhero-ing in the suit for a while there in the Layton/Michelline run.

Anyhow, this should make the third film even better by putting the story in. I think Favreau knows about the traps the third films fall in, and he's trying to include the best stories possible. Mandarin with DIAB? That could be so kick ass and actually be a very pleasing film. They usually take out their guns the second time around. But hey, maybe we could have a third one is best this time?

Yeah, they'll get to the alcoholic stuff eventually....the character of Tony Stark has to be built up a bit, before they can tear him down...

Yeah, and I think that will be better for the character. You'd think they would do it here but I think Favreau is smart with this. He wants to take his time with that because most importantly, we have never seen a superhero film dealing with alcholism. If done right, this could be groundbreaking. I mean, how far would these films come, with something fun with the first IM and then in IM3 we're dealing with alchohalism? I think these films will gradually be darker, but not too dark for the sake of it.
But I wonder about the toilet that the designer had to design where Stark throws up in in his armor. Probably a huge hint of what's to come. I would love in the third film for Tony to go out in his armor drunk. That would be great!

A little disappointed, but saving that storyline would certainly help break the apparent curse of bad threequels in the superhero genre. I figured that Justin Hammer being in "IM2" would have certainly brought in DIAB, but perhaps it is best that his alcoholism is built up even more to where everybody will see it coming and not just fans of the comics.

Its good to see they are building towards the eventuality of TS's alcholism, and it makes sense they would use this 2nd movie as a stepping stone in that general direction.

Like Favs mentioned, Hancock kinda messed with that whole angle about a superhero being straight wasted during his adventures. Stark did it first, but they would have to bring it on without it coming off derivative or funny.

Its good they are not bringing it up because then it would have to have played a role in the Avengers and i think that would have been just too much focus on Tony while taking away from everyone else.
