Th Confused No More Tom?

Van Natta logs on as MySpace CEO
Site attempts to catch up with Facebook
By CYNTHIA LITTLETON

MySpace has a new friend-in-chief.

News Corp. has named former Facebook exec Owen Van Natta as CEO of the social networking giant. The appointment comes on the heels of Wednesday's ankling of MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe (Daily Variety, April 23). Van Natta is the first major hire made by News Corp.'s newly anointed digital czar, Jon Miller.

"Owen combines a deep understanding of social networking, a keen business sense and the operational experience to guide MySpace through its next phase of growth," Miller said in announcing the appointment.

It's no accident that News Corp. would look to an exec with Facebook experience to take the reins of MySpace. The upstart Facebook has stolen much of MySpace's thunder during the past 18 months.

Facebook, founded in 2004, has jumped from an average of 36 million unique users in March 2008 to 61.2 million last month. MySpace's user base remains a robust 130 million worldwide, but its monthly averages are declining slightly Facebook also tops MySpace in the key measure of the amount of time users spend on the site.

Van Natta was previously chief revenue officer and veep of operations at Facebook, though most recently he was CEO of online music venture Playlist Inc. Earlier in his career, he was veepee of worldwide business and corporate development for Amazon.com, where he managed marketing programs and strategic partnerships.

Meanwhile, Playlist on Friday named former VH1 and Infinity Broadcasting topper John Sykes to succeed Van Natta as CEO of the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company. He had been a board member of Playlist.

The MySpace ship has been sinking for a looooong time now. It looks like it's capsizing.

Meh, I rarely go on My Space or Face book anyways. They bore me.

Call it what you will, but pointless shouldn't be on the list. There's much that can be done through a MySpace or Facebook-type website, be it keeping in touch with people you aren't able to talk to or see as often as you like, re-connecting with people you haven't heard from in years, so on and so forth. You know the drill. All reasons why I've kept my accounts active. It may not be your cup of tea, and I'm kind of growing out of it myself, but I'm not going to bash or look down on people that continue to use the social networking sites.

One thing I WILL bash: Twitter. **** Twitter.

Myspace now = Facebook

Twitter will = the next thing to come along
