This is my own choice and not what may be the most conventional or well-known one (ZOMG WHO SHOT JR!!1[/Entertainment Weekly]).
The one that caught me off-guard the most was probably Lem getting blown up by best friend Shane in "The Shield." I was still shocked an hour later.... like that feeling when you leave the theater after a really great movie. What's your top TV death? Obviously, we could all name dozens of great ones, but what's the one that shocked you the most? |

Sorry to nitpick... do you mean Teri Bauer or David Palmer? Both were pretty shocking.

I good one, because with all the times Buffy's friends and family have been in danger of being hurt or killed, it was a great reminder that real life sh** can still happen. Sometimes people just die, and no supernatural/demonic element involved need be involved.

Yeah, didn't the actor say that he didn't want their to be any way for his character to come back?

Yeah, I never saw that coming. I din't think Keamy would do it, but then bang, hot ass Alex is dead.
Kutner on House came out of nowhere, and it was a suicide. And even though it wasn't TV, Wash's death in Serenity shocked the S out of me (all the characters WERE on tv, so I'm going to count it)

While there are some good ones here, Lem and Shane's family on the Shield, Alex in Lost, Wash.
I gotta go with Teri Bauer in 24, after all the crap Jack went through that day, his wife was still killed. Plus the fact that she was pregnant really helped with the impact. Another good one for 24 was Ryan Chapelle, kept thinking they'd find a way to save Jack from killing him, but no, Jack executes his boss.

Dinobot in Beast Wars. I was fairly old at the time, but it still surprised me that a Saturday morning cartoon actually killed off a major character (pretty graphically for a robot, too) and, even more surprising, kept him dead for the remainder of the series.
Also, Dean and Hank Venture on The Venture Bros. I remember seeing that episode at the end of the season and wondering, "Wait, what the f*** just happened?"

Good stuff in here. My initial response was going to be Lem and Ana Lucia & Libby. Since those have been covered, and I'm lazy, I'll chime in with James Evans.
Damn. Damn. DAAMMMN! Torres. Man, that show went downhill fast.
