Default GE Says It Achieved Milestone In Laser Disc Technology

28 April 2009 2:45 AM, PDT

General Electric's GE Global Research unit announced that it has developed the next generation in laser disc technology that will allow storage of 500 gigabytes of information on a single disc -- or the equivalent of 20 high-definition Blu-ray discs or 100 DVDs. The disc, which GE describes as micro-holographic, makes use of the entire thickness of the disc rather than merely the surface. "The day when you can store your entire high-definition movie collection on one disc and support high-resolution formats like 3-D television is closer than you think," said Brian Lawrence, head of the company's holographic storage program. GE said that it is working on a way to store more than twice the amount of data on the micro-holographic discs. In addition, it said that players for the discs will be backwards compatible -- that is, also able to play standard CD, DVD, and Blu-ray discs.

That's cool, but the they are a little behind the times. In 2008, Pioneer introduced a 400gb Blu-Ray and is working on a 1tb disc.

Hollywood doesn't need 500GB to release their movies with awesome sound and picture, as demonstrated by releasing fantastic Blu-rays which currently only use a capacity up to 50GB. This will work better in the computer world.

Although I enjoy showing off my DVD collection it would be kind of cool to be able to have your entire collection on one disc in the future.

Whenever you go to your friends house you can easily bring your entire selection of movies with you.

It woud be like the American Express line, don't leave home without it. :P

One thing that I think would be cool for this disc if they put entire tv series or seasons on a single disc. Other than that I don't really see the use.

Yeah, but will you be able to add on to the disc? What happens when you transfer all your movies on this disc and the next week, you want to add another movie onto the disc.

I would hope by then that they find a way to be able to add more to a disc after you've done the initial burn and watched what's on it. That isn't impossible.
