I would highly recommend the 44 years of the Amazing Spider-Man DVD-ROM set as it's a sweet way to catch up on all of the issues of Amazing Spider-Man. It's one thing to read summaries on Wikipedia or in Spider-Man the Ultimate Guide but it's so much more fulfilling to read all of these old issues one by one and witness the evolution of Spider-Man. While alot of the 1990s issues are garbage, I would highly recommend the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko era, which is one of my personal favorites. I enjoyed John Romita's but never loved it the way some have. His son, John Romita Jr., is a fantastic artist, especially in the first part of J. Michael Straczynski's run (pre Sins Past of course).

I would personally recommend the DVD-ROM as well as the Marvel Essentials Line. Although the reprints are in black and white, there are a lot comics for not too much money, and the color quality from the 1960s and 1970s is lacking anyways. The artwork is almost enhanced by the lack of color. You can also collect all of the recent Amazing Spider-Man by J. Michael Straczynski and Brand New Day in trade paperback and hardcover.

To Recap-
44 Years of the Amazing Spider-Man (Amazing Fantasy 15, ASM 1-530, Annuals 1-26)
http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Spider...bxgy_sw_text_c

Essential Spider-Man (Black and White Reprints) http://www.marvelessentials.com/

The JMS run of Amazing Spider-Man (A list I ALSO wrote myself) http://www.amazon.com/The-J-Michael-...res_rpli_alt_2

The Brand New Day era (After the JMS Run)
http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Spider...ch_f_1_rsrsrs0

Also recommended (something I want myself) is the ASM omnibus, which collects every Steve Ditko issue of Spider-Man in one MASSIVE hardcover. Kind of expensive, but so awesome. Only a hardcore fan should buy this, not a first-timer.
http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Spider...f=cm_lmf_tit_1

Also recommended is Ultimate Spider-Man, a modern take on the character, which I love.
http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Spide...lm_f_2_rlrsrs0

And if you're interested in further stories of Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man: Blue is a good read.
http://www.amazon.com/Spider-Man-Blu...0459814&sr=8-1

Mark Millar's Marvel Knights Run was really fun to read and I desperately want the Hardcover but can't find it anywhere within my price range. (MKSM 1-12) http://www.amazon.com/Marvel-Knights...0460495&sr=8-1

In terms of film/television, I love love love Spider-Man 1/2 as I think they nail nearly everything great about Spider-Man. Not 3. 3 Bad. 3 Very Bad. Grrrr.

And the Spectacular Spider-Man is supposed to be a very good cartoon adaption of Spider-Man but seeing as I'm not 9 and cannot wake up before 11:30 on a Saturday morning, have only seen the first 3 episodes on my computer. It's a very good adaptation if anyone's interested.
http://www.amazon.com/Spectacular-Sp...0460313&sr=1-5

I also really enjoyed Spider-Man the new Animated Series on MTV. Very slick animation and fun voice acting. I don't think anything has ever captured Spidey's movement the way this show did.
http://www.amazon.com/Spider-Man-Ani...0460313&sr=1-8

or watch it online at Hulu- http://www.hulu.com/spider-man

FINALLY- Stay away from Spider-Man-Torment. It's a five-parter created by Todd McFarlane and it is quite possibly one of the most retarded stories ever. It's so slow, boring, unfunny, undramatic and artistically incomprehensible that I wanted to drill straight through my forehead after I read it. Same with Clone Saga, Maximum Carnage, Sins Past and One More Day. Awful stories, each of them.

i liked maximum carnage...i thought it got REALLY repetitive but i thought it delved well into the that character and thought that some of the moments between carnage and venom were quite nice.

I'm honestly awaiting a Spider-Man Omnibus vol. 2.

I'm genuinely shocked it isn't out yet. Slap the first 30-40 Stan Lee and John Romita issues in there, and you've got a killer collection! The first appearance of Mary Jane, the showdown with the Green Goblin, the first appearance of the Kingpin, etc. There's ALOT of good stuff in there.

As for Omnibus 1, I have that one. Still in its original plastic-wrap, and I will NOT open it until I meet Stan Lee face to face, and I can get him to sign it for me...or when I get really really bored! (I have the issues reprinted int he essentials, so I can read then whenever I wish)

I can't believe you didn't like that story. Pete beats ock with a chem set. It was mainly an ock story though, but that's just full of goodness in itself. Makes their rivalry and their commonalities really shine through too.

I've got kind of a rare gem. "Spider-man: Spirits of the Earth". Written and beautifully illustrated by Charles Vess, this story literally takes Peter out his element when he and MJ travel to Scotland. There, Spidey faces ghosts, demons, and even a descendent of a founding member of The Hellfire Club. Worth the price of admission just for the art alone!

I LOVE ESSENTIAL SPIDEY VOLUMES 1 AND 2.
JMS ultimate collection volumes 1 and 2 are great as well (how i miss the marriage and the matured but funny Peter, Peter really grew in these storylines, this is Peter like 10 years older than the BND Peter we see now in terms of his maturity).

I really don't want this thread to die guys.
If there are ANY books of SPIDEY you would recommend say so now.
I recently re-read Reign and Kraven's Last Hunt.
I also, god knows why, read American Son. I was very disappointed...

The Clone saga books have started coming out but they are a bit pricey

Are they still worth it or can I just read "the real clone saga" book and get the overall gist of the story? I need some more info on kain before he turns up in the grim hunt (I skipped Spidey during the original release of the clone saga).

While "the real clone saga" starts off as a bare bones version of the original clone saga, halfway through it takes a turn into totally new stuff. So no you wouldn't get the gist of it because it's very much a What If...? story.

It's sad that none of the BND stuff is essential in a Spidey collection. I hope that grim hunt and OMIT turns out great. But to be frank, If you want good spider-man now a days you need Ultimate. I don't like all of the changes, but the stories are more Spideyish than the 616 version (Mix of humor, action, drama is perfect).

I actually don't get how a character like Spider-man can be so hard to write? It's like the creators go out of their way to make it bad?

Give me Dan Slott and a great artist and let them work on the damn thing exclusively.

Grim Hunt is very good. Then again, I'm also a Kraven fanatic, so I might be a little bias. Still, it was about time to bring him back.

Spider-Man Noir is good for anyone who hasn't read it. I haven't gotten around to picking up the second one yet however.
