The interaction between father and son in Last Crusade, to me, is funnier than anything in Temple of Doom.... not to mention numerous other funny moments in that film (bumping into Hitler, Henry Sr calling the one nazi a goosestepper... the scene where they both answer to "Dr. Jones".)

I thought the father and son relationship was the greatest thing about LC. You really got the sense of their relationship from the past and just their interactions in the present.

"Those men are trying to kill us!"

"I KNOW, DAD!!!"

"This is a new experience for me..."

"Happens to me all the time."

But the best scene between them is at the crossroads to get to Berlin. Especially when he slaps Indy for blasphemy. Just that entire scene was powerful. It meant something. And the scene in the zeppelin between them was great as well.

"What you taught me was that I was less important to you than people who had been dead for five hundred years in another country. And I learned it so well that we've hardly spoken for twenty years."

And finally the last scene in the temple and the last moments of the film.

Take that entire idea and relationship out, aside from some good action and locations, it doesn't feel much different than Raiders.

^^ I loved those bits in Last Crusade. If Connery didn't play Idnaina's father, it wouldn't hav worked as well, IMO, lol.

I am sure Sir Connery was asked but turned down being in KCS, I only wish Lucas did not make the mention of him dying so if there was an Indy 5 ,Indy & Dad going off on 1 last search together would have been fun.

Temple and Raiders tie for me as far as being favorites, but i like each for different reason. Temple of Doom has the coolest and most epic action sequences; the Lau Che/Antidote fight, the ceiling with the spikes coming down, the rock crushing machine/Thugee heavy fight, and the bridge sequence - which to this day, no other movie has topped when it comes to climatic final battles; the bridge sequence is easily the greatest movie climax of all time...and yes, i love Willies 'Anything Goes' opening!

Raiders in more grounded and somewhat more believable, and just an all around well structured movie.

Crusade just went way to far with the comedy. It is easily the most light hearted of all the Indy films, although the latter part of the Tank sequence - once Indy jumps onto the tank, plus the Young Indy on the train, are the only two action sequences i liked in Crusade. The rest were meh...
Crusade was funnier in the sense that the humour worked better for me, but Temple of Doom was an outright comedy in places. Yeah, it was dark, but so is the Evil Dead series.

I think people who see Temple of Doom as more of a dark than a funny film are just remembering how it scared them as kids. When I watched it I didn't think "Woah, this is dark" although I see now why it can be seen as such.

Connery was always going to be retired. No way they would have gotten him out of it. I liked Darabont's inclusion of him in one scene in his script, but he wasn't needed. It made KOTCS feel more as a standalone.

I'm still a little p'ed off that they made Indy 4. With the exception of the warehouse scene, everything else felt forced. Ford is still Indy, but his interaction with Marion felt so forced to me. The Last Crusade was an ideal close to a great franchise. The 'holy grail' is a saying that signifies 'the ultimate', of something, so it made for a great last movie, to a great franchise. By making Indy 4, Lucas and co have be-littled it.

Definitely agree with Jak re: Temple as a comedy. It's dark comedy, but it's comedy. Very funny, too. The dinner sequence is possibly the most overt, sustained "comedy routine" in the whole series.

One of my favorite series of all time. Last Crusade is my personal favorite, with Raiders a close second; but I love them all.

I had very little problems with Crystal Skull. I thought Ford knocked it out of the park; it was good to see him back in form after years of slumming it. I love Marion, so I'm glad she was back. She's still got such an infectious energy, she lights up the screen. Still so cute.

I did want Sallah back, not that he was really needed. There's no excuse really, I just love the character. Why not? By the end of the movie, Indy had a posse like 5 people strong, what's one more?

One issue, particularly noticable when watching the movies back to back, is that I just miss the rough and tough dirtiness of the originals. This includes Indy's particular large body count; he capped Nazis left and right back in the day! It's not just Crystal Skull; you can notice this change start to happen back in Last Crusade, which I guess was part backlash towards the "darkness" of Temple and the associated PG-13 issues. Those first movies were VIOLENT AS HELL; no way you'd get away with that anymore. But I won't lie, I miss the blood and the diry and the grime.

I'm torn on a potential INDY 5. I selfishly want to see more of his adventures, but I don't want it to suck. Ford ain't getting any younger; he was able to pull it off this time, but that was already a few years ago and the clock is ticking. Plus, the end of Skull was incredibly satisfying, so I almost don't want them going beyond that (then again, I used to say the same thing about the end of Crusade).

I want an Indy V badly. But it has to happen soon. Five is good enough. Then end it. I'm awaiting a five Indy movie marathon someday.

I have faith that they've come up with something good. Spielberg and co. just need to get off their asses and do it. I'd rather have Lincoln delayed so he could do this. That's right. I said it.

exactly, KOTCS fits perfect in the series with all the flaws all movies, including Raiders, had.
If anything KOTCS tied TOD more into the series, having more pulp elements than ROLA and LC. TOD stod out in an odd way in the trilogy but fits nicely in the quadrilogy.
And no, thats not a generational thing, I'm old enough to have seen TOD in the theatre.

What if a fifth Indy happens to be an animated film, even released on DVD?

Indeed, if it has amazingly detailed animation.

I know how you feel as I have done everything I can to suppress my feelings for the future of the series. I have lost complete and utter faith in Lucas and believe he will, one way or another ruin the next movie.

Just as he "ruined" he second movie. I'm sure many people thought the same when they talked out of TOD. You go from something like Raiders, wait for three years for a sequel, and it's the complete polar opposite of it, people must have been very disapointed. The tone is too dark, Willie and Short Round are annoying, the offensive dinner scene, nothing like Raiders, etc.

Nothing wrong with that. Lucasfilm does CW which is amazing. I'm sure his team would do wonder with Jones.

Well it seems like Lucas/Spielberg/Ford no time is catching up to them, so let's hope they get the script/story finished soon & they all like it.

Well writing scripts take time along with everyone working on side projects too. We don't know how things are going behind the scenes.
