Because the film did not blatantly stick it in our faces.

SR went for the spiritual jugular, blatantly and purposefully forcing the allusion onto the character.
I only noticed the "crucifixion pose" until someone pointed it out to me on the internet. The only Christ reference I definitely noticed was when Jor-El said his "..I send them you, my only son" speech, which I love BTW. I don't think most people in the audience were bothered by those references, which were done in good taste, imo, and which enrich and elevate the character's status as the Jesuschrist of the superheroes. What a lot of people wanted was more action as in superfights.

Also, Superman in SR was also compared to other mythological characters such as Atlas and Prometheus, and maybe more, so it wasn't just pure Christ references.

Do you not recall this poster and the pre-film discussion regarding it's obvious christ-like posing?

Christ wasn't the first thing that came to mind when I first saw that.

The first movie is about as much as you ever want to really do with him as any kind of Christ figure and even there it's a bit much in some places.

I don't even mind the idea that he has this destiny to help the world but he doesn't need to be Jesus in a cape to be relevant as a symbol of hope.

Also if Jor-El knows everything about what his sons future is gonna be in advance it kinda sucks some of the drama out of the Krypton tragedy. I always kind of liked the idea that these two people seeing their world dying around them and Jor-El only had that small working model with which to give his son *some* kind of chance for surviival and then out of that tragedy comes the greatest hero of all time.

He wasn't "Jesus in a cape" in SUPERMAN RETURNS. There's a lot more to Jesus than sacrificing himself, dying and coming back to life. Short of the crucifixion post, which is almost NEVER entirely subtle when it's used in literature and film, the allusions to Christ were fairly subtle, considering, and as has been pointed out, most people had to have them pointed out to them by someone else to catch them. I'm pretty sure the average person didn't see Luthor stabbing Superman and go "That's the spear in the side!"

except the death part and torture thats more like Moses then Jesus. Him leading the kids back to their village and being on the run and the people going after him like those soilders did. Thats Moses not Jesus.

Absolutely, it also reduces the role of the Kent's upbringing and the nuturing of a Rockwellian Smallville that should IMO be the paramount reason for Superman's stature.

Actually i remember going to like bible class for awhile at church. I stopped and they wouldp lay movies every friday. They played Superman Returns cause it represented what we been talking about with Superman as Jesus and Lex Luthro as the devil. Totally forgot about that story.

So that proves that the message has been sent that he was to be a Jesus Christ symbol in that movie.

Surprised no one has done a "Jesus vs. Moses vs. Superman" comic book yet.

Its ok to see homages and references. Not something "in your face" like what happened in S:TM and SR. There are many other inspirations for Superman to draw upon.

Returns was definitely in your face with the Jesus allegory. And true, it's there in Donner's film but nowhere near as much.

How does Lex Luthor represent the devil, beyond the basic "evil" elements of him?
