Apparently it was destroyed.

Why do the Primes feel the need to essentially destroy their entire civilization when faced with an uprising?

In a way Optimus Prime is responsible for Cybertron completely dying off and pretty much ending their race. He had the bright idea of launching into space the main source of energy and life that feeds their planet and race instead of being able to take down Megatron and the decepticons.

Then when the Allspark is located, he suggests destroying it for good knowing his home planet and race would be sacrificed in the process.

Then it is revealed in ROTF that the earliest Primes, instead of taking out the Fallen instead have the bright idea of sacrificing themselves and the one key that unlocks energy to continue to feed the main energy source that keeps them alive.

Then, when the key does resurface, OP I guess feels that destroying the Allspark wasn't enough, for good measure he should destroy the key that unlocks energy across the universe.

WTF? Can't they once take out the enemy without first having to think they have to destroy the one thing that will keep their civilization going? The Primes are more responsible for Transformers deaths then the Fallen and Megatron are combined.

And why is a key that unlocks energy called the matrix of leadership?

Because it takes leadership to do such a thing. To choose a star to snuff out to bring life to their people.

Why is a device that does DAMN NEAR EVERYTHING in the comics called "The Matrix of Leadership"?

^I just remember in the cartoon the Matrix of Leadership was passed down from one Prime to another bot, transforming that bot to a Prime and the status of a leader. So it made more sense.

In the movie, it's really just a key. Perhaps they should have just called it something else. I'm ok with changes, but this seems like such a big difference that they would have seemed better off calling it something else.

I agree I hated they used the Matrix and a cure all/Key/Power source. Vector Sigma or his Key (Mind you in G1 lore that key was Alpha Trion) would have made more sense than the Matrix of Leadership.

In the animated movie Galvatron could not open it to destroy Unicron cause he was not a Prime. The Fallen, even though he was originally a Prime, should have been denied access to even touch it yet alone use it to power the sun catcher cause when he betrayed the other Primes he lost the ability to access the Matrix and it's powers.

It's not just a key, that's just one of its functions. Most keys don't bring life to deceased alien robots.

Here's the thing. The Matrix has always been something of a cure-all. Who can use it and how and to what extent sort of varies from instance to instance over the course of the mythology.

The Allspark cube became what The Matrix of Creation/Leadership had always been in TRANSFORMERS, supposedly due to rights issue when the Matrix movies were still recent. So the Matrix of Leadership's normal role was diminished somewhat. It still retains vast power though, has the connection to the Transformer afterlife, and served as a key to unlock great power.

Wikipedia sums it up pretty well, though. Check it out.

In the comics and shows, The Matrix of Leadership is a MacGuffin of sorts, and has been used for damn near everything, but it generally has to do with creation and lifegiving, as a storage place for immense energy, though it can be used to retrofit things/transform Transformers into more powerful and skilled ones, and has even allowed Transformers or humans to take control of other robots from time to time. It also holds all the knowledge of the Transformers race (A role the Allspark took on). It's been used as a "badge" of sorts, denoting leadership. And it's been used as a key to access supercomputer Vector Sigma, when the original key was unavailable. There's also the idea that it serves as a Gateway to the Transformer afterlife, which is what happens to Sam in ROTF.

There are also other matrixes out there.

So yeah...one of the matrices may be gone. Or it may just be buried under rubble. Tons and tons of rubble.

^Interesting points and that's a nice Wiki summary. I could buy into it a little more now but I wish the movie didn't put so much of a focus as it did on the MoL's ability to power up those machines. The other aspects to it are more interesting and the movie didn't cover them as much as I thought it could have.

So, the allspark is the life giver. And with no allspark... no new transformers. Thanks Optimus, i am joining the decepticons. Megatron has a point!

It gets better. There's also The Underbase, which is obviously where they got the idea for the Allspark for TRANSFORMERS, by combining the idea of "spark", energon cubes, and The Underbase.

In the film it's unclear . However in the novel & Comic Adaptation The Matrix of Leadership is retrieved by Optimus at the end of the battle and now resides in his spark core .
