Did they really need to make up villains? With a Rogue's Gallery as colorful and interesting as Spidey's...again, did they really need to make up a couple?

Maybe we'll see Swiss Miss debut in a comic soon?

Meh. It looks bad.

Let me preface by saying I am a big musical theatre fan. Whether it be something "heartwarming" like Billy Elliot, hilarious like Producers or Spamalot, cerebral (anything Sondheim ever wrote like Sweeney Todd or Little Night Music), and even the big spectacle numbers.

Spider-Man as a musical would obviously fall into the latter. These are the shows that stay around forever and make bank (Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Wicked, etc.). They can be really good or really boring. Spidey is such a visually unique character I don't really think one can translate his visceral appeal onto stage, no matter how abstract you get.

They tried to get the most free-thinking abstract director who made one of those great-big spectacles that will never die on the Great White Way...The Lion King. However, I am of the mind that that thing working was somewhat of a fluke. I've seen her attempt Shakespeare on screen before (though I will see her Tempest eventually) and I saw her horrid attempt at a Beatles musical (Across the Universe)...and she is mostly style over substance.

That trend continues here. The musical seems to have no plot and the characters are flat. They are saying Peter and MJ are not the heart of the show. What made Raimi's movies work was that audiences cared about his Peter, MJ, Harry and some of the other characters. They were big and cartoony, but they were weighted down with a sense of humanity.

This looks like hallow spectacle. Never mind, they are putting progressive trendy things in like "the GG was created by wanting to combat climtae change" that make absolutely no sense in the asic Spidey story. Also, the "Spider-Woman" magic subplot sounds insipid.

But beyond butchering the source material, it makes two gigantic mistakes:

1) The characters are boring and unimportant. That is toxic to a stage production where it is the actor's true medium and characters (and their writing) are the essence of what makes a play work or not.

2) The music (the most important aspect of a musical production) sounds incredibly bland. As a U2 fan, I'm surprised. But it doesn't scream, see this show. It just sounds like a lot of rock noise to Taymor's dazzling, but incoherent visuals.

This could have been Phantom of the Opera. What it looks like is another Jekyll/Hyde or Tarzan fiasco.

Oh well. I really did not want to see "Batman: The Musical" in a few years anyway. So there is a silver lining, I think.

Missing Hammerhead and Kingpin, but fun. Love the bonus questions.

This is a really random cast, though. Grim Hunter? Swarm? Emily Osborn? Miss Arrow?

Spider-Man's Broadway debut has suffered another setback - leading lady Natalie Mendoza was injured during the show's first preview Sunday night, a spokesman said.
The actress, who plays Arachne, was hit on the head by a rope and said she felt fine after her performance, but has since been diagnosed with concussion.
Mendoza was unable to perform Thursday night and understudy America Olivo will take her place until at least Tuesday.

1) I totally saw this coming.
2) How the hell do you manage a concussion from being hit in the head with a rope?!

It was rope used to hold people up in the hair. It was probably heavy.

Also this is typical for Broadway shows so this isn't that unusual.

I'm not going to lie. When I saw the preview on 60 minutes, this production looked promising. Now, coming here, and reading all the political bull sheet they're trying to tie into it.

I'm sad to see the potential has subsided.
