I was sitting here at the computer listening to some music and one was a mashup between the Beatles and NIN. I thought, Wow now there is a difference in music. Then I thought, Weren't teens in the 1960's supposed to be idealistic and pure of heart? Peace and love and all that. I know that in the 1990's, we were supposedly much more cynical and jaded.
Do you think thats true? Why the change in attitudes?

Vietnam, Nixon, AIDS, the assassinations of MLK and RFK, a lot of factors really. The teens of the 1960s' became jaded, cynical adults because of these events and gave birth to cynical, jaded children as a result.

Qouted for truth. Plus, don't forget the death of many of the Sixties icons, like Hendrix, Morrison, and Joplin. And then of course the assassination of Lennon.

And not necessarily just their death, but the aftermath, publically. For example, obviously since he was dead, Hendrix wasn't going to make more new music, but look at some of the stuff that filled the airwaves instead. Came from some of the people on worse drugs, or with worse lifestyles, and it showed. We were lead into darkness by darkness, to a degree.

the funny thing is that your teenage icons come from the decade before. influenced by the decade 30-40 years before.
the musical style maybe influenced by 20-30 years ago but that is a rebellion.

i think in the 60's teens found that they had a voice which gave them the power to rebel. they dreamed of ideals, and were passionate in fighting for them. but over time it became clear that the ideals they believed in wasn't gonna become a reality, which killed the passion. that reality sinks in over the next few decades which brings us to the 90's where kids are just angsty and hopeless.

We could take this discussion to the Conspiracies thread. There are those who believe our society has been under assault and that under the guise of the aww shucks let's not offend anyone mentality we've been violated by the red diaper brigade; dumbed down and stripped of our moral compass. I think you can argue against the theory that fits the observed facts, but the facts (change of morals) is disturbing none the less.

I don't care about their morals, so much as the subsequent generations (younger ones) will have to pay for the boomer's bills. It's not to say either the subsequent generations are any better. It's the whole "they can walk off into the sunset and live happily ever after off of social security" with the economic/financial mess they created, that pisses me off like no tomorrow.

I mean sure, we have it more easier than the 60's teens. But 60's teens has it more easier than the 30's teen and so on. When I hear that how the 60's was better, I usually hear it from my parents when THEY are teenagers~ they had no responsibilities, nothing to bound them down like taxes, children, and jobs. That make me fear that I would be like that when I have children of my own, "Oh, the 90's was like OMG! So much better than this" |
