I don't particularly understand why people thought that Square was going to mess around with Eidos' properties. The whole purpose of the purchase was to help build their catalog of titles that appeal to more Western audiences.

Yeah, but Square made The Last Remnant specifically to appeal to Western audiences as well and that still looked like every other JRPG to me. I was a bit worried that maybe the culture clash would be too big to overcome if Squeenix started putting its fingers into the pies of Eidos' franchises. I really didn't want to start seeing chibi Hitman or Lara wielding a gunblade or anything like that. Irrational? Almost certainly. But the fear is still there.

Well I believe the failure of Last Remnant on all fronts was one of the main spurs of this decision. They obviously don't know what Western audiences want and have never really catered to them before so the next step was to buy into the market. I'm sure they may have some influence on the Eidos stuff, but I doubt we'll see any radical reinterpretations of them or anything.
The most I see them doing is spin-offs or unrelated offshoots to appeal to the Japanese market, but I think they're going to step back and let the Westerns do their stuff

That makes sense.
I wasn't talking specifically about this Tomb Raider project, by the way. Nothing about it seems overly anime-ish or anything like that. Just a general worry I got when I heard about Squeenix taking control of Eidos and its franchises, several of which I like a lot. Hell, Tomb Raider 1-3 had a big hand in really getting me into gaming in the first place.

Regardless of how they do it, I do think that TR needs some sort of update. Especially after Uncharted came and blew it away. Playing them back-to-back, TR just seems tired and outdated. It needs more than just a facelift, I just hope that SE and Eidos can pull it off.

I thought Crystal Dynamics did an amazing job on Tomb Raider: Legend. We could use more like that. Anniversary was good as well, but what I've played of Underworld felt a little off.

This will probably tie-in with a rumored reboot of the film franchise, supposedly complete with a re-casting of the lead role.

Cool, maybe they'll get an actual English woman this time.

She doesn't really look like Lara Croft to me, but she's definitely hot. Isn't she just a model, though? I didn't know she acts.

And this movie you saw, I assume you had to go to some seedy part of town where it was in a hidden bin all the way in the back of the store.

It's a marvel of the modern age. If someone told me the internet was invented specifically for porn and I didn't know any better, I'd be about 90% inclined to believe them.

http://www.1up.com/news/tomb-raider-announcement-imminent
New Tomb Raider Reboot Announcement Imminent? Teaser image suggests earlier rumors of a reboot focusing on survival may soon be confirmed. It looks like the long-running rumors and speculation about the next proper Tomb Raider game may soon come to an end. The latest issue of Game Informer includes a two-page spread (via NeoGAF) of a teaser image for the next issue of Game Informer, showing artwork of a shipwreck with the words "A Survivor is Born" scrawled across the pages. Not much to go on, sure...until you recall this pretty much exactly matches earlier rumors of a potential Tomb Raider reboot. Last year, a market research survey leaked to the net describing one concept for such a reboot, where a "young and inexperienced" Lara Croft would become shipwrecked and marooned on an island. The game would supposedly focus on the concept of "survival," as well as on hunting and being hunted by mysterious enemies. So yes, this teaser image may be foreshadowing the announcement of a completely unrelated game that also just happens to be about a shipwreck and the following struggle for survival (which, let's be real, is certainly within the realm of coincidental-if-unlikely possibility). Or, it could be an early hint that this Tomb Raider reboot concept is, in the end, the real-deal -- and we'll get a few more details soon enough. The teaser image says the next cover will be revealed on Game Informer's website on December 6, so all mysteries will be answered then. |

I'm all for a reboot. I quite like the idea of an open world, work it out your own way survival game. Hopefully they'll still be a decent, linear story to go along with it.
On a side note, what did everyone think of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light? I've only played the demo, but it seemed decent enough, might have to treat myself to an early birthday present.

On one hand I really like the idea of an open-world "survival" type of game. But on the other hand.... Tomb Raider. Ugh.

I haven't been into Tomb Raider for a long time, so I don't mind them revamping it. What they are doing now seems actually pretty interesting.
