A few months ago I read somewhere about the theoretical true weight of Captain America's shield. A physicist or some scientist theorized that due to the size and material of the shield it would weight 600lbs more or less. I can't remember exactly or where I read it. I thought it was in Wizard but can't find it in any of my recent issues. It might have even been an excerpt of Physics of Superheroes. I really can't remember. Does anyone know what the hell I'm talking about? Thanks!

That just doesn't sound possible.

I don't know if I'm remembering the facts correctlty which is why I'm trying desperately to find the source. But with someone with Cap's strength, I think it's might be possible.

I'm not certain as to how much Captain America's shield weighs- according to the Marvel Universe guide it's a combination of Adamantium and Vibranium alloy that has defeated every attempt by the US government to replicate and mass produce it, but it CAN'T weigh 600 pounds, even allowing for the Super Soldier Formula in Cap's veins otherwise he would get a hernia every time he picked it up. It's probably between 1-20 pounds- about the weight of a regulation army field pack.

In the comics its about 12 or 13 lbs. But this article I thought I read was a theory of how much it would weigh in real life given its size and the assumed weight of vibranium. It was defiantly heavier than 20 lbs but I can't remember what. I thoughtthat since it was from this year someone might know what I'm talking about. Thanks.

That's not what the Marvel Directory says...
http://www.marveldirectory.com/indiv...ainamerica.htm But this Marvel article says Vibranium + (something secret): http://marvel.com/news/comicstories.13640.the_history_of_captain_america~ apos~s_shield Comic Vine backs that up... http://www.comicvine.com/captain-ame...ield/18-50737/ Quote:

No way does it weigh 600 lbs.
Adamantium was created as a result of trying to replicate Cap's shield. Last edited by Mr.LethalWeapon; 10-22-2010 at 03:03 PM. |

How can they factor in the weight of fictional materials? Last time I checked neither adamantium nor vibranium appeared on the periodic chart let alone an alloy mix of the two.
Also, considering non super powered people have picked up Cap's shield. I think 600lbs. can be ruled out rather quickly. Marvel says 12 lbs (5.44 kg). That’s good enough for me.
