oh yeah a dragonball thread. just started rewatching the whole series with my 9yr old nephew. he loves it. we finished dragonball and are watching dbz now. i have to say dragon ball the original holds up still to this day. it's funny and has lots of tournaments. my nephew really like the tournaments.

the first series really was about the quest for dragonballs, training and the tournaments, until piccolo shows up. dbz is more about defeating evil. i kind of like the adventure of dragonball more than the action of dbz.

While DBZ is cooler i must say that most of the times Dragon Ball has more story, i think that while i enjoy Cell and Buu's arcs after Freeza they already did it all.
Goku had become stronger and by dragon ball z his fight with freeza even destroyed a planet, i think that could have actually been a great finale

The fight scenes in Dragonball Z were more epic and grand in scale but DB was more exciting due to more focus on the techniques and martial arts. DBZ was just constant blurry fists and huge energy balls, still fun but not as inventive.

DB and Z are one martial arts genre after another building up to their natural conclusion. Z is essential to Dragonball.

Could you explain how Z is essential?

I miss this show. The battles, although drawn out, were incredible.

Yes, Dragonball Kai was suppose to have updated quality while also streamlining the story so it didn't drag so much. Haven't seen much of it so can't say too much about it.

Because it's a natural evolution of Dragonball. Basically, the Dragonball saga is an emulation of early wuxia martial arts films, evolving along the lines of Hong Kong action cinema all the way through the New Wave wuxia films decades later. Z is important but it's a drastic tonal shift. Z was only Z as an anime, but was just Dragonball all the way through the manga. Basically, Dragonball changed sub-genres as it evolved and built up toward its natural conclusion. It works best in it's full form, but it can be enjoyed without the later storylines.

Sorry for the long reply, but I had to get my facts straight with a friend who is way more knowledgeable about this than I am.

I would not say all of z is essential.

60% of everything up to the end of the frieza saga is.

alot of it could have been streamlined in fairness.

cell saga was meh and the buu one was pretty aweful storywise.

^Dragonball Kai basically streamlined the entire series going up to the Cell saga in only about 100 episodes. It was kind of sad they didn't continue all the way through Majin Buu because I wanted it in HD also.

Call me strange but I like Dragon Ball Z filler. I have the remastered set of all the seasons which look great and I get to have both the canon and anime only stuff. I prefer to have it in its entirety, filler and all. First Dragon Ball anime was incredible though.

Not a fan of Kai personally. Feels very choppy especially to someone who's seen that particular series many times.

I think the best thing about Dragon Ball Z was the Cell Saga, it didn't get any better than that imo; and the way he was defeated was epic. I personally don't like Dragon Ball Z Kai because I used to watch DBZ and the voices are different and the dialogue has been changed too much for my taste.

Agreed.

Both the English and Japanese voice actors just seem tired in this run. They've all done so many redubbing sessions that they've probably have had it with this series already.

Uninspired is the best way to call it.

I'm watching DB:GT on Nicktoons right now. Why?

Pretty damn bored. The English intro is hilariously bad.

To me the Frieza saga feels like the natural end point of the series. Having said that, I can "accept" the Cell saga because so much of it is so awesome (logical inconsistencies aside), but the Buu saga is just...ugh. No thank you.

Yeah the Buu saga dragged on and on.

As bad of a wrap GT gets at least it was centered around the Dragonballs again. I know when I was younger I used to hold a whole lot of animosity towards the show but for some reason watching it now it doesn't seem all to bad.

Pretty funny for what it's worth. Especially watching naive/oblivious young Goku that's always a hoot.

Bringing Goku back from the dead (again) pretty much handicapped the Buu saga.

The ending of the Cell saga was all about the younger generation fufilling its potential and the endless possibilities of the unknown future (at least that's my interpretation). The Buu Saga pretty much throws that out the window.

Watching GT now. I really feel bad for Chi Chi. Her therapy bills must be through the roof.

Oh God, Vegeta's Kid n' Play hair and pornostache.

Goku is so nonchalant about the entire ordeal.

I'm recently downloaded all the remastered series and just finished the Saiyan saga. Seriously if there is one character i genuinely dislike , it's Gohan.
A completely an utterly useless character . Till this day i'll never understand why the hell TOriyama wanted his to be Goku's successer especially considering the fact that without support from other he absolutely can't do crap.

Although i have to agree that the cell saga was the series strongest point in terms of storylines , suspense and character development.
The Buu saga was the weakest though Vegeta's arc was epic.

Gohan got much better though after the Saiyan/Frieza saga. He's a complete boss during the Cell saga.

Well from what I had read, the author of DB/DBZ had tried to retire Goku's character in the series, while trying to shift the focus onto potential new protagonists like Goten and Gohan, but fans at the time apparently weren't happy with that, thus he was forced to bring back Goku.

You're completely right.

Fan moaning forced his hand in bringing Goku back as the focal point.
