Stan Winston's Godzilla design was bad ass. I hope they use something like it.

one of my main reasons why I didn't like 98's Godzilla was his stupid design. I understand he's a Komodo Dragon but I could get past that awful chin of his.

i love Stan Winston, and no offense meant...but i find that design rather plain and dull. it's a great representation of what the original design would look like if it were brought to life, but it doesn't look nearly as fierce or intimidating as the design by Fritofrito (the one i quoted).

The one things I'm excited about is the villains. I'm hoping we get Jet Jaguar in this update.

Jet Jaguar was introduced at a low point in the Godzilla film series (the early 1970s) when the movies were losing child viewers to live-action hero TV shows like Ultraman Ace. I doubt we'll see any reference to that time period in a serious updated Godzilla movie. The only really good thing that came out of the '70s Godzilla movies was the concept of MechaGodzilla.

As someone who knows nothing of the Godzilla mythos, what the hell is MechaGodzilla? Lookslike a dumb robotic version of Godzilla.

I'm all for keeping close to the original Godzilla design, except they have to make him less clumsy looking. That's one area where Godzilla 98's design wins over the original.

Oh and nothing less than 100m tall.

Dang, I hadn't seen this one before! That's friggin' bad ass. They went a little extreme with the "crystals" around his eyes and shoulders, but overall that's a very good re-imagining of the character that still maintains the integrity and concept of the original design. Something in between this and Stan Winston's design would be perfect, because this is a creature that clearly can't be done with a rubber suit and yet it still looks like Godzilla.

Re: Godzilla 2012 film update

^ that look is cool, but i have one problem with it. The arms and legs seem too... humanoid. It looks like godzilla if he were a playable character in a mortal kombat game. Whereas the stan winston design looks like it could have been a living breathing creature, particularly in the anatomy of its arms and legs. Granted, it's not as menacing as steroid-zilla up there^, but i think some tweaks to the face, maybe darkening the skin tone and making the spines more jagged could fix that. Oh, and maybe arc his back forward a little. Anatomically speaking, i'm not sure if i think an upright-standing reptile is a good idea when it comes to believability.

MechaGodzilla is indeed Godzilla's "evil robot twin", so that in itself is nothing surprising. The character is one of Godzilla's most popular enemies, however (ranking behind only King Ghidorah and possibly Mothra), and has been redesigned three times over the decades, appearing in some of the best Godzilla movies of the 1990s and 2000s.

1970s MechaGodzilla - built by apelike aliens to defeat Godzilla and invade earth.

1990s MechaGodzilla - built by the United Nations from scavenged future technology to defend Japan against Godzilla.

2000s MechaGodzilla - built by Japan incorporating bones and organic material from the dead 1954 Godzilla as framework for a somewhat "cyborg" MechaGodzila.

^ the third one's definitely my favorite, has the most interesting story i think.
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
I just wish they had gone further into that whole "flashback" thing where he thinks he remembers he's the original Godzilla and proceeds to trach tokyo, maybe they did, and it got cut out, i've only seen the English dub so they probably do

The cyborg version reminds me of the "Monster Wars" storyline from the Sony animated series where aliens turn Godzilla 98's body into a cyborg.

Agreed. It's a great rendition and more "Godzilla" than "GINO" but at the same time not really something I can see carrying a movie. It's a bit like redoing Barney's costume by giving it a more scaly, organic texture. At the end of the day, though, he's still a 7 ft purple theropod that dances with children. It makes one ask "why bother?"

It doesn't help that his posture makes him look like a penguin.

I like this very dinosaurian concept by Ricardo Delgado:

But here's one problem -- Godzilla isn't just an oversized dinosaur - he's a monster, and supposedly an unstoppable force of nature combined with nuclear power. While I like the "realistic" elements of the dinosaur-Godzilla above that make him look less like a man in a costume, he still needs some super-powered elements to make him look more badass and indestructible. Perhaps a change in Godzilla's traditional skin texture to make it more armored.

I think the 90's Mechagodzilla was the lamest in terms of design. He had those giant fat hips, and his head was tiny. Overall he looked pretty silly IMO. Mechagodzilla 3 was bad ass, though.

Unfortunately, the 1990s Godzilla also had fat hips and a tiny head.

But yeah, the very best MG was the 2003 version from Tokyo SOS.
Also a very cool toy made by Bandai...

Ok so, they should use the Stan Winston Godzilla and the beautiful original script from the Americanized Godzilla.
