IMO what makes Godzilla Godzilla is that, be he Ishiro Honda's nuclear metaphor or Jun Fukuda's overgrown superhero, he's STILL a living weapon of mass destruction, and he generally regards any little pink squishies underfoot (human or otherwise) as much a valid threat to him as a housefly, regardless of whatever sort of high-tech hardware they throw at him. The newfangled iguana design, the lack of fire breath, the Babyzillas...I could easily overlook all of that if the bloody CGI lizard had actually BEHAVED like Godzilla.

I can agree with that. In the Honda films, Godzilla had a personality that was bigger than life. He met enemies head on without fear, be it man or a monster.
In the 98 film he acted like a small lizard that you see in your yard that scurries away in fear.

Monsters director Gareth Edwards talks to MSN

It's the stuff every movie maker dreams of: your movie project is spied by the big guns in Hollywood, snapped up and suddenly you're on the movie map. British director Gareth Edwards knows how this feels, after his 2010 independant sci-fi movie, Monsters, became an overnight success.

Now rumoured to be working on the re-make of Godzilla, MSN Movies sat down to chat to him for a few minutes at the Jameson Empire Done in 60 Seconds global semi-final, which he was judging. The competition challenges aspiring filmmakers to remake any big hit in exactly 60 seconds. No small feat.

Gareth's tight-lipped when it comes to letting any Godzilla details slip, so when asked what he's been up for the past year, says gingerly: "I've been trying to make a film... It's all really good, if you look at people, if I look at people whose careers I've looked to emulate, if you do that IMDB game (of looking at their projects) they do tend to have had a two or three year gap - there's not much you can do about it. There's just a long process before it all goes ahead."

Talking about his own experiences as a young director, he told us: "I guess, in terms of, when I was a film student, and trying to make films, I was always emulating the big films. The first thing I ever did at college was Terminator. The next thing I did was like Cape Fear... So, if you can tell a story in a minute, then it means the story works. You often say to the editor when working, you say 'try and do a one minute version of the film', because it teaches you what you can get rid of."

Another one of the judges in the competition is movie critic Alex Zane, who we grabbed a few minutes with to chat about the movie he'd make in 60 seconds.

"I'd probably try and do Jaws purely because it's my fave film of all time and I have a bath in my house," he quipped.

Talking about movies and being a critic, he said: "It's very mood-depedent watching movies. I've reviewed films badly, I've sat back and hated myself, and gone, you know what it wasn't that bad, you were just in a bad mood. So I have to catch myself. Conversely though, I'll be in a really good mood. Like, you know, the movie MacGruber (a 2010 action comedy). I watched that and I laughed from start to finish."

"I gave it four stars and then it comes out on DVD and I get friends round, to come round and watch it and I put it on, and for about 40 mins people just sat in silence looking at me going 'Is this a joke?' I must just have been giddy with life on the day I saw it first!"

The winner of the Done in 60 Seconds competition is being announced at the Jameson Empire movie awards on Sunday 25th March. MSN Movies will be there on the red carpet bringing you all of the action, news and gossip!

I always liked watching him and King Ghidora, but that's just me.

I think Destroyer (I refuse to call him Destroyah, it's just plain stupid) makes a great enemy for godzilla, at least thematically. he spread from the weapon that killed godzilla originally. granted they'd have to start the movie with godzilla's first rampage then flash forward for that to work.

I've always liked the look of Biollante and 70's MechaGodzilla. Although I doubt either will be used,at least in the first film. I wonder if a new creature should be created instead of just recycling Toho's old Big G foes?

Yeah, he also has a cool design, but if he was ever used maybe it should be for a sequel.

Agreed, but like with Destroyah and Mechagodzilla it may be best to use them in a sequel.

I know this one's not the coolest thing to put Godzilla against, but what about Anguirus?
The film could take aspects from the first 2 films, Anguirus could appear soon after Godzilla, and since in the original he allways hated Godzilla it would make sence for both to fight.

Instead of just making it Godzilla set in America they could also make it more of an International threat, attacking country after country, or even stay in Japan, they could even end it with Godzilla being destroyed by the Oxygen Destroyer, which could be used as a plot device for monsters in the sequels, like Destroyah.

Biollante, King Ghidorah, and the monster from Godzilla 2000 were my favorite monsters... however, if they decide to do a monster in this film, i want to see Godzilla fight a replica of himself (no, not zilla)... that way, they can use that background story to set up for Mecha Godzilla

Never getting made. I've given up hope. With Pacific Rim out next year, the giant monster market will be all used up.

I feel like, if he fights another monster here, it'll be Mecha-Godzilla. People love going with the "evil twin" sort of nemesis. I'd love to see Edwards do it as a trilogy, building up to a clash with King Ghidorah. Start with the Mecha-Godzilla fight, do another movie where he meets/fights other, actual monsters (traditional frenemies like Mothra, Rodan, Anguirus), then conclude with a giant clash with a seriously powered-up Ghidorah.

I only saw the 1998 Godzilla once, but I remember enjoying it at the time. Then again I was about 12 and I was a sucker for anything with a giant monster rampaging in a city. I might dislike it more next time I see it, but I remember digging it. I've always enjoyed pretty much anything Godzilla.
