Michael Jackson's concert film makes 100 million

Over the weekend, Michael Jackson's concert film, This Is It, not only made the number one spot at the box office, but also broke a couple of records along the way, not least of which, most money made for a concert film on it's opening weekend, a record previously held by Hannah Montana herself, Miley Cyrus. This, I believe, sends a clear cut message to Cyrus and it goes a little something like this. Miley, if you want your stuff to make more money, you're gonna have to die.

I've always hated that stupid remark "The Film Only Made Money Because He/She Died"

People tend to think "Death = Money" Which is a stupid remark. Bernie Mac was a much more WELL KNOWN actor than Heath Ledger. Remember what I said "Well Known"

And which of there last films came on top? Soul Men or The Dark Knight?

Yeah, but Soul men wasn't mentioned on the tv on every news channel that airs 24 hours a day from his time of death to the date of release of his movie. They talked about Bernie for like a week. They talked about Ledger all the way to the day the Oscars aired.

Sony also announced that, since the pic's release on October 28 in theaters worldwide, THIS IS IT is now "the highest-grossing concert film of all-time" with a worldwide total of $101 million. The studio reported the estimated gross at $32.5 million domestically and $68.5 internationally in its first five days of release. That surpasses the record previously established by Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds (which had a lifetime worldwide gross of $71.3 million). But that's not saying much. Michael Jackson was a global star, whereas the other concert pics either feature Disney Channel young'uns in artificially short runs, or famous acts like U2 and the Rolling Stones in very small release. Of course, it didn't help that AEG, the concert promoter that auctioned off the movie rights to Jacko's hi-def rehearsal footage filmed before his death, had predicted This Is It would make a staggering "$250 million in its first 5 days". Or that a joint AEG/Sony news release had touted all the record-breaking presells recorded by the pic worldwide, thus setting up huge expectations for This Is It that weren't met.

WHat's even worse is that the many people inside the industry already knew that the the studio was never going to release this just for 2 weeks. EVen before the underwhelming numbers were reported , word around hollywood was the movie would play longer then 2 wks and that 2 week period was simply reported just to increase ticket demand.

Well Miley has a much smaller fanbase as she's an act for preteen girls. Michael Jackson has been in the industry much longer and had a much wider fanbase. Don't really understand the swipe at Miley. Oh and by the way, Miley made more domestic in her first 5 days than Michael. Might also be good to mention the $100 million is worldwide.

Yes, they were expecting bigger numbers. I was disappointed not to see as many people as I anticipated at my job working in a theatre. Personally I think it has to do with some people either not having taste or they just don't want to believe Michael is gone.

It's hard watching this film knowing you'll never see him perform live again or you won't see what he had in mind to its full effect.

But I believe if they made a concert film about Jay-Z, Beyonce, Chris Brown, or even Britney Spears people would've flocked to see. So for me it's a combination of people with no taste in music or entertainment, plus not wanting to see it knowing that Michael is gone.

It only made 34 million in the states. And like 70 million overseas.

Or the fact the Michael passed his prime 20 years ago. I'm sure if the tour did go on it would've been a huge success since people would've wanted to see him live, but seeing him live isn't the same thing as seeing a movie.

I don't see why people need to watch this movie for Michael. It's like saying that people should go to a concert of a particular person even though they might ejoy his music.
Personally i have no interest in seieng this movie but then again i'm not exactly the concert type kinda guy. I think the guy is brilliant but IMO i see this more as a making money of a dead star as opposed to this being his remembrance.

Plus according to studio officials they're saying that ONE of the reasons why the numbers were so low was because people thought tickets were already sold out because of the initial 2 week run.

Had this movie come out close to the time after he died , it would've probably made more

They made this movie because Michael died. They rushed it to get it done as quick as they could to stay on the heels of his death while his name was still every where. So yes, it made money because of his death.

Wow! Really did seem to defend Miley there. Funny, since I could give two $#!ts about her. It really was more my distaste for Michael Jackson than caring about Miley Cyrus and I only chose her because mastermindjcg did.

I read today that the film's release will be extended through Thanksgiving now. I definitely plan on seeing it! But I think it will be so sad in many ways too!
