When New Zealand woman Vanessa Horton crashed her car into a river near the family home, her husband had to make the excruciating choice between saving her or rescuing his son, who was trapped in the sinking car.
So the question is: which do you choose .. your wife or your child?

Child. And I think the mother/father would agree with that decision too.

Whomever was within reach first. Then I probably would've dove back in and attempted to save whomever was next, death imminent or not. I don't think I could live with myself if I didn't at least try and/or possibly died myself.

Child, but I'll probably tried to save both.

My child. Even if I chose my wife, there's no way she'd allow one of my girls to die.

I'm going to make a blanket generalization here and get some angry responses. If you choose to save your wife over your kid, you had no business being a parent in the first place.

I would save my son. Or call Spider-man because he can cheat and save both. Here's the story BTW:

My uncle brought this debate to the the kitchen table last month. He chose his wife because that is the person he made a commitment with, though he would try to save both..so he said.

Didn't that little twit divorce his parents or some crap? He'd be lucky if I didn't beat him to death with a sock full of pennies.

Disregarding all emotional attachments and just looking at the value of the two lives at risk here, I think you have to save the son.
Let's assume that the main purpose of human life (and all life in general) is continuation of the species. If that is the case, then the son's life is more valuable because he has not yet served his purpose in life, whereas the mother- having given birth and raised a child to near adulthood- has served her purpose. By saving the mother and letting the son die you not only remove his potential contribution to the species but also nullify the mother's contribution. I know that's a very cold and disconnected way to look at it, but in this situation two lives are in immediate danger and you have to choose quickly. Emotions will inhibit your decision making, so it's best to become objective if possible and look at the situation from a neutral point of view.

If I saw it happening, I'd probably jump on SHH, start a poll and save whoever received the most votes after the first hour.

Well, your third option of "Neither... save the iPod" would probably get the most votes.

Sacrifice yourself, save them both? Doubt that was possible.

Don't be a jerk, that's not an option.
