Loving that snippet of Greenwood's score, and PTA's using fisheye lens, nice.

Out of context and slightly weird, yet so damn captivating. Classic PTA.

Yeah a bit confusing out of context. It didnt really tease Hoffman's character which is slightly disappointing but as BLue Sugar said it's captivating

Looks like another great film by PTA. Phoenix is a great actor, I'm glad to see him back.

Yeah really glad to see Phoenix back to "regular" acting. Even more so when he seems to be as great as ever.

http://www.thewrap.com/movies/articl...playbook-40911

Quote:
“The Master” seems destined for controversy. Paul Thomas Anderson has written a tale that is loosely inspired on the life of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. The short piece shown was enough to suggest that Anderson (“Magnolia,” “There Will Be Blood”) has again taken on an epic subject and will face it down fearlessly

Philip Seymour Hoffman, in moustache and suspenders, plays The Master, the Hubbard-like leader of what is referred to as The Cause. Amy Adams, in fierce dramatic scenes, plays his headstrong wife.

Joaquin Phoenix (right) is the center of the story as a postwar drifter, searching for a path and racked by anguish or mental illness or both.

In one scene, The Master demands: “Is your life a struggle? Is your behavior erratic?”

It looks ambitious and exciting, though no frogs appear to fall. Remains to be seen what the never-shy Church of Scientology will have to say about this portrayal, however fictionalized.

Sadly with Daniel Day-Lewis in the running this year, even the bookies have stopped taking bets for Best Actor. Even from that 1-minute preview, Phoenix's work looks phenomenal.

If the trailer is any indication, Phoenix is leading and Hoffman is supporting.

Speaking of Hoffman, they are doing a frustratingly good job of keeping him under wraps .

The hell???

Well this has got to be like a teaser teaser trailer. Just think if they had a trailer for this teaser teaser trailer, I'd even be even more mystified.

Same cinematographer from TWBB it looks to be. I don't really have an opinion on whether this looks good or bad.

I gotta see more, because I'm just like ?

Actually it is Mihai Malaimare Jr., who worked with Francis Ford Coppola on "Tetro" and "Youth Without Youth".

I think Robert Elswitt may have been busy shooting MI:GP and the new Bourne to shoot "The Master". But who knows.

Phoenix is the true lead but I thought that since Hoffman has a "juicy" role and is a previous winner it'd be easy to bump him up for the lead but I underestimating Phoenix, if that teaser is any indication Phoenix will give a riveting performance and it's his show so he should be definitely nominated in lead, it may be too early to tell but it's looking good for him.

Yeah, it's kind of sad that he's not involved. Everyone is quick to name Spielberg/Kaminski, Coens/Deakins, and Nolan/Pfister, but PTA and Elswitt are such a perfect fit, too.

I'm sure Malaimare is going to make a name for himself with this. Everything so far looks exceptional.

I read before that this is like Hawke/Washington in Training Day in terms of meatiness of roles. Phoenix is lead but PSH's role is more showy.

Jonny Greenwood's work for There Will Be Blood was incredible (as was that entire film, PTA, ELswit, DDL). Definitely looking forward to this.
