I'm a fan of Italian cinema. A few of my favorites are....

La Dolce Vita, directed by Federico Fellini

Seven Beauties, by Lina Wurtmuller

Life is Beautiful, by Roberto Benigni

And then there's this:

Yes, sad and beautiful. I really like Fellini's early movies like "I Vitelloni", "Il Bidone", "La Dolce Vita", "8 1/2".
And speaking of great italian movies I also love "Bread and Chocolate" and "Profumo di donna" (poorly remade as "Scent of a woman" with Pacino).

I haven't seen those movies but I want to. Another great Italian movie is Two Women, an early Sophia Loren movie. I forgot the director but I know it was based on a book by Alberto Moravia. I've also seen all of Lina Wurtmuller's movies. Giancarlo Giannini was great in them and he's one of my favorite actors.

And thanks for the info on Scent of a Woman. I didn't know it had started out as an Italian flick with the title Profumo di Donna. Interesting. I saw it when it came out and I thought it was alright. Not great, but it was OK.

Great Film, too bad the director, like many foreign directors before him, didn't succeed commercially and artistically with his Hollywood transition so far.
A lot of foreign directors do their best work in their native language, I still much prefer John Woo's Chinese movies to his American ones and I'm glad that Almodovar never succumbed to the call of Hollywood.
On the other hand others, like Verhoeven in his day, have done great work in America as well. So I suppose there are really no rules.

A lot of good films have been listed.

Hopefully Gasper Noe's Enter the Void will be a classic. It recieved some enthusiastic responses at Cannes.

Gaspard Noe is a indeed a very talented director. I really liked "Carne" and "Seul contre tous", but after all that I heard about "Irreversible", I could never bring myself to watch it. And I'm not particularly faint of heart.
