So it'll be Tim Burton's Disney's Sleeping Beauty, considering that Maleficent isn't from the original tale, right?

Maleficent was in the original tale, Disney just changed her character a bit. Instead of 12 good fairies, Disney gave us 3, and made the evil 13th fairy Maleficent. Disney actually made Maleficent better than the original character.

Okay, he'll wear fugly make-up. Burton will not do a superficial typical disney story. He will not have a beautiful woman awoken by a beautiful man. It's against everything he believes in.

She wasn't named "Maleficent" until the Disney version, and was basically the default evil witch of fairy tales. Disney made her Maleficent, in both name and in the mannerisms that we all now know and love (and fear).

Burton's Alice in Wonderland was okay, and I do agree with this a bit. Sweeney Todd and Big Fish are great films. His other works have been fairly mediocre in that span, and I don't think this will be great based on his Alice in Wonderland film (which I still feel lacked substance in regard to exposition and resolution...all rushed).

Old news, but hadn't been posted here. Snow White and the Huntsman made me think of this project.

Tim Burton Won't Direct Disney's 'Maleficent' (Exclusive)
The project would have teamed the "Alice in Wonderland" director with Angelina Jolie
3:44 PM PDT 5/16/2011 by Borys Kit

Tim Burton has moved off of Maleficent, the Disney fantasy that would have teamed him with Angelina Jolie.

Maleficent
is Disney’s live-action take on Sleeping Beauty, telling the fairy tale from the point of view of the evil witch who threatened to kill the princess. Disney years ago put a name to the witch, who had gone anonymous in the various tellings. Since then, the green-skinned queen of evil who morphs into a dragon has become one of the most popular Disney villains of all time.

Burton was only loosely attached to the project but his involvement was significant enough that last year the studio hired Burton's Alice in Wonderland collaborator Linda Woolverton, who also wrote Disney’s The Lion King, to pen the script. The project is being developed as a starring vehicle for Jolie.

Disney is not about to put Maleficent into a suspended-animation sleep. The studio is now on the hunt for a new director. One of the names that has surfaced in the early search is David Yates, who helmed the past four Harry Potter movies.

And Burton hasn’t left Disney. He's currently working on the feature-length stop-motion version of his 1984 short Frankenweenie. The movie is due for release on Oct. 5, 2012.

David Yates is too much of a director-for-hire, and I don't think he can bring the darkness.

Disney Sets Robert Stromberg To Helm ‘Maleficent’
By MIKE FLEMING

EXCLUSIVE: Disney has tapped Robert Stromberg to make his feature directorial debut on Maleficent, the Linda Woolverton-scripted revisionist take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale that is being constructed as a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie to play the villainess. While Stromberg is new to the director’s chair, he is no stranger to dealing with big-ticket spectacle films. He has been production designer on Avatar and Alice In Wonderland, and Disney’s upcoming Oz The Great And Powerful. He also worked on visual effects for such films as 2012, Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End and Master And Commander. Joe Roth is producing.

This gives Disney feature heads Sean Bailey and Rich Ross another tentpole feature to complement the Marvel product, with A-list talent. Maleficent stacks up alongside Oz The Great And Powerful, and the Johnny Depp-starrer The Lone Ranger. Stromberg’s repped by UTA.

Hmm, it's a great concept but not sure about that director. Guys who do a lot of CGI work and then suddenly become directors are not always a great choice. Gives me nightmares of Eragon.

Elle Fanning In Talks For Princess Aurora

Quote:
Expectations are high for the Robert Stromberg directed inversion of the Sleeping Beauty tale Maleficent. And why not? The long Broadway run of Wicked - to say nothing of massive book sales - proved that there's a huge audience for these sorts of post-modern fairy tale deconstructions when handled well and with Angelina Jolie on board as the evil Maleficent the film will certainly not lack for star power.

The big remaining question has been who will playing the other half of this equation? Sleeping Beauty herself?

Sources tell Twitch that Elle Fanning is now in talks for the role of Princess Aurora, the young beauty sent into a lengthy slumber in the classic tale. Fanning is not a particularly surprising choice - there being a shortage of young stars with name power to even come close to Jolie's - but that makes her no less a good one. The younger Fanning sister has proven to be talented and versatile to this point in her career, and being sought after by directors such as David Fincher, Francis Ford Coppola, and Cameron Crowe should tell you a thing or two about how people feel about her within the industry.

would rather have yates direct like rumored earlier, but elle fanning is a fantastic actress, and I'm not that crazy about angelina jolie. she's never really wowed me, although her performance in girl, interrupted looked good.

Elle Fanning is a great young actress, but whatever happened to her sister Dakota? It was Dakota getting all the roles for young girls, now Elle is. It's too bad that Burton won't direct this movie, though.

Elle looks too young to play an older Aurora. If she's playing a teenage version of the princess, and someone older (like early 20s) is playing the adult Aurora -- that's great. She's perfect.

Agree that Elle Fanning is too young. Cast her sister... or even better, Rachel Hurd-Wood.

Was a lot more interested in this project when Aronofsky was circling it, but casting Fanning would definitely gain those interest back (albeit smaller). Also curious to see if Stromberg is up to the task of directing a movie, at least we know that it will look great.

Angelina Jolie talks about 'Maleficent', says she'll have the character's horns

I do think she'll be perfect, visually speaking. Wonder if she can recapture Eleanor Audley's calm, almost sensual tone?

I wonder who's going to be the better witch... Jolie or Theron? The game is on.

Maybe Dakota Fanning could lay the older Aurora.

Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Red Riding Hood... they are all classic fairy tales. But not all get good films.

I wonder when we will see a dark and epic Cinderella.
