Wow this is one of the most depressing movies EVER. I just got back from seeing this and I am wondering why critics and others are saying this is a good movie. It has zero redeeming qualities about it. I thought this movie would have some simmer of hope but nope it just ends on a downer. And I don't plan on EVER watching this movie again.
I tend to avoid watching movies that are depressing. I go to movies to be entertained and take my mind off reality. This movie did neither. I gotta go watch a comedy or something to get my mind off how depressing this was. Just wow..... Last edited by ShadowBoxer; 01-29-2012 at 07:57 PM. |

It's heart wrenching and depressing, but it spreads a good message to appreciate the good times and always go out fighting.

Movies are meant to engage you in some way and this certainly did that. Just because you leave a theater feeling down does not make it bad. I can understand if you thought the marketing was deceptive, which it was.

I never thought it was depressing (and I've seen quite a few real depressing films), it was more empowering than anything. It questions your views about death and the will to fight.

Maybe it's because I went in to this movie with the mindset that it was going to be horror-esque, but I didn't leave the theater feeling depressed either. Plus

HA! I'd like to think he was found and rescued by the League of Shadows despite them being in completely different parts of the world.

I like to think Taken and The Grey are Part 1 and 2 of the origin story for Ras Al Ghul.

I think the movie is pro-wolf more than anything and encourages people to respect them and their territory. It's made abundantly clear in the film the humans were in their territory and wolves hate when their territory is intruded upon by anything not of their kind. And besides that, the wolves were symbolic in that they represented how death always tracks us down at some point in our lives and that death is inescapable in the long run, much like the wolves in this film.

There is no way that any of them actually watched the movie. It's like Fox news calling for a ban of Mass Effect because it was "pornographic" but then they later admitted to never even playing the game nor seeing much of it.

That's it for me. I did find it a little depressing, but, it really did make you wonder about death and what is worth fighting for? To go down swinging or just give in and enjoy the nice view? And will you look up in the sky and plea? Or will you do it yourself?

They do. But they are probably aware people don't. It's part of the reason Wolves are endangered and/or extinct in areas. Wolves get killed on pure sight alone and have laws made specifically to kill them off. How many positive wolve movies have been made?

Hey, PETA, how about you get stranded in the wilderness and see if you can try to not fight wolves being territorial.

This film was incredible. A movie in January this great? It seems so strange. Joe Carnahan just climbed his way up the ladder for me.
I mean that ending. I didn't even blink. But what a perfect way to go.

Very well done movie but the ending ust ticked me off.
I spend 2 hours to find out if he can make it out alive and I dont even get that. In the previews they even showed him running at the alpha wolf but in the movie he doesnt. So was there a full fight scene shot? Atleast let me know if he dies or not. Just a cheap way to jip the audience in my opinion. Everything leading up to that final shot was great though. |

Not really. As an atheist myself, it really made me think about certain things. But it really doesn't matter what you believe in, it's about choosing whether to fight until your last breath or give into everything. Your own beliefs are even being thrown at you in a survival situation. If you can survive that, then you did the ultimate thing.

The Grey is right up there with two of my all time favorite survival films,The Edge and Gulag.Liam Neeson is John Ottway a marksman who kills the wolves who may harm refinery workers in Alaska.Haunted by visions of a woman he loves, depressed with life,a plane crash jolts him out of his depressive state. He along with 6 other survivors:
Todd Flannery (Joe Anderson) Talget (Dermot Mulroney), Diaz (Frank Grillo), Hendrick (Dallas Roberts), Burke (Nonso Anozie), and Hernandez (Ben Bray). battle: the elements in the form of blizzards and 10 below temperatures, each other, and the wolves that stalk them, the wolves that just do what comes naturally...and then some. This is an extremely entertaining film on all levels, drama, humor, action. I became emotionally tied to the characters as they face death, and they reflect on God,family, women, and fate. I was a bit disappointed with how a portion of the film plays out,by the outbursts from several other people in the theatre they too felt this portion was truncated. There are also some cliched moments, but the film is so well acted and put together before the aforementioned i cant disavow the film.Because it is one of the most involving and entertaining films so far this year. Scale of 1-10 an 8 ˝ |

I'm already eager for this to hit Blu-ray and to hear the director's commentary. Should be interesting to hear him talk about the symbolism and underlying themes. If they can get Neeson to record the track with him that'd make it even better.
