Since we continue to pretend only domestic counts, it should be noted that only 3 movies have made more than 300 million this year. Last year 3 movies did it. 2008 also had 3 movies over 300 million. 2007 had 4 over 300 million (the record). 2006 only had 1 over 300 million. It's really time to stop pretending a 300 million domestic gross is "disappointing" or "a minor hit"....especially when you do it without "3D" to boost sales. (IM2 is the only one of the 3 this year to do it 3D-free) We've got some real warped perceptions here. $611,241,000 as of Sunday.

An impressive holiday weekend all round. Even airbender did well despite the reviews. As if it needs to be said: people are still going to the cinema.
Incidentally Peter Travis' review for Inception has partially leaked. He gushes over it but suggests it might too smart to make really huge money. Empire also gave it 5 stars.

So now if Inception makes a lot of money, it's because it is a smart movie...and if it doesn't make a lot of money, it's because it is a smart movie. That's hilarious! ("incidentally" eh? wonder why you slipped that particular movie in) Talk about covering all the bases. I gotta remember that one in case a movie I love doesn't do well at the box office.

^ Wow, calm down. Your hysterically defensive attitude says more about you than the content of my post. Just reporting what a critic said. I for one have never suggested Inception will make loads of money.

The Nolanites are just as bad if not worse than the twi-hards. What sucks is that most of these people never heard of Nolan until Batman Begins. I remember a friend reccomending Momento when it came out, and I thought it was brilliant, and one of the best indy films out there.
Now it's just comical. I think the film will be good, as I was a huge fan of the film that inspired it, Dark City, infact in the trailer there's a couple of scenes that are straight out of Dark City, but don't tell the Nolanites that Chris Nolan stole an idea from another movie. And yes hatebox throwing that in was an intentional jab at people on this board. But whatever. This stuff has gone on back in 2004 when Spider-man 2 did well some idiot posted on the SM boards that Batman Begins would "kick Spider-man 2's ass" a year before the film ever came out. The fanboy stuff is pretty sickening around here, and it really sucks when a film like IM2 is successful, and the fanboys have to run it down to make themselves feel better. Star Trek was easily the best movie of the summer last year, but it didn't make the most money. Box office is only one predictor of success, and only so much as it will greenlight sequels. The movie I'm most upset about for this year, was Percy Jackson. That series should have been the next Harry Potter, but the producers felt that the book wasn't good enough, so they changed it all to hell, and in the process ruined any chances of a sequel being greenlit. |

Iron Man 2 was a good movie & a success. Anyone who disagrees is blind &/or retarded.

Who were you quoting there? It's a knock on that fan group, and a perfectly justified one at that.

IM2 sits at $308,738,470 after 62 days domestic. It's also dropping to 322 domestic screens this week, which pretty much means it will be in 2nd run, budget cinemas in about 2 weeks.
Given it's daily pace, # of screens, and where it stands compared to IM, I'm calling the final total right around $311 million domestic. Maybe squeaking to the $312 million range. |

Also worth noting that IM2 was in 10th place on Thurs while IM1 was in 13 place the same day of its run (also a Thurs). That's one demonstration of how the box office is in a lull these days. IM1 actually made more money that day but still couldn't break the top 10. So in context IM2 is doing better.
IM2 was in 11th place on Wednesday...so I guess it's catching and passing movies around it!

I still thought it would surpass Iron Man but oh well. Got it wrong on that one.
It will still surpass $310 million which people here were saying it wouldn't even get over $300 million.

Yes it's still out in a few hundred theatres or so and will probably just barely cross $310 million domestically.

Some people were saying that it had a chance of not making 300mil, not that it wouldn't. It has made 300mil and it is a hit but there is still a but.
And I agree that boxoffice doesn't mean that a movie is good or bad. Iron Man 2's 600mil doesn't mean that it was good. Anyway I will agree with some of you on one thing the Nolan fans are annoying as f**k and although I'm very much looking forward to Inception it sickens me that alot of people made up there minds before seeing the flick. Listen I think that it looks fantastic and I'll probably end up enjoying it and giving it atleast a 9 out of 10 but I hope it disappoints at the boxoffice so I can laugh at the crazies. Petty and foolish I know.

I can't see Inception bombing, but I don't see it making that much - even $300 domestic would really surprise me. Its big budget is basically WB saying 'thanks' for the Dark Knight and a gentleman's agreement for him to do the next Bat film.
