Kirsten Dunst Boards Lars von Trier's Melancholia

Source: Deadline New York
April 16, 2010

Kirsten Dunst ("Spider-Man" films) is set to star in writer/director Lars von Trier's sci-fi disaster film Melancholia.

Penelope Cruz was previously in negotiations for the role before she took the role of Blackbeard's daughter in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides instead.

Melancholia will shoot July through September in Southern Sweden.

Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård and Udo Kier are also attached to roles.

Lars Von Trier Begins Filming ‘Melancholia,’ Reveals Vague Plot Details

Quote:
We’ve known very little about Melancholia, the next film from Lars Von Trier and the follow-up to his festival firebrand Antichrist. He’s promised “no more happy endings” and the film has been called a “psychological disaster movie,” but beyond that we’ve had almost nothing to go on.

Melancholia recently began production, and Trier held a press conference to mark the occasion. While he stopped short of handing out copies of the script to the audience, the director did give out a few details.

“There is a wedding and melancholia, but I don’t want to say any more than that,” Von Trier told the press, as transcribed by Dear Cinema. He explained that the characters played by Alexander Skarsgård and Kirsten Dunst will marry, then experience a ‘dramatic’ end to their union. Other character details include the fact that Charlotte Gainsbourg plays Dunst’s sister and John Hurt plays their father. Stellan Skarsgård plays either the father or best man for his son’s character.

Kiefer Sutherland, who seems to be the male lead, said “my character represents what is right, while Kirsten Dunst represents what is left. There is an important balance in the film.” Sutherland also commented upon Von Trier’s style, saying that he loves ”
filming ‘live’, without any rehearsals.”

Dunst also commented on Trier’s filming methods, saying that “Lars instructs without [rehearsal] and it gives real things life. This is a continuing challenge for myself and with the material. [There's] poetry in the way he tortures women.” (That line comes from a translated Danish report, via The Playlist, so while that line about torturing women is provocative, it may not be 100% accurate.)

Also from the translation is Trier’s joking comment that the film “looks like ****.” He added, “No, I hope not. But it is certainly a little uglier than the previous one.” Cinmatographer Manuel Alberto Claro said, ” He finds an energy in the scenes before and make up with photographic aesthetics. It suits me fine.” He continuted, “all are on to improvise and take it from the hip. Each day we begin without instruction, and are then given instructions along the route. The actors are completely wild and very sweet and well prepared.”

Can't link the trailer here since it's a bit NSFW but the trailer looks good, as usual with Von Trier he has put some wonderful visuals but also some weird ones, he manages to round up a great cast as well. I'm absolutely excited for this.

Imo, the trailer wasn't much, but I see anything by Von Trier, so I don't need trailers to sell his films for me.

It was two shots, and well maybe I'm playing on the safe side but I don't want to get banned. Go ahead, you can ask the mods if you think that you can post the trailer. It's not going to take place entirely at the party after the wedding, that's just in the beginning of the movie.

This looks amazing and with the apocalyptic premise and the all-star cast, I'm definitely interested to watch this.

I love the scenery in the trailer, Von Trier really uses some great locations in Trollhättan.

This movie is going to give Nibiru conspiracy folk a lot to chew on for a second.

Quote:
"The Nibiru collision is a supposed disastrous encounter between the Earth and a large planetary object (either a collision or a near-miss) which certain groups believe will take place in the early 21st century. Believers in this doomsday event usually refer to this object as Planet X or Nibiru. The idea that a planet-sized object could possibly collide with or pass by Earth in the near future is not supported by any scientific evidence and has been rejected as pseudoscience by astronomers and planetary scientists."
Lars frequents doom theories I guess.

Lars Von Trier is a genius...I can't believe that his films arent more widely heralded as the masterpieces they are.

REALLY looking forward to this!

That's great news. It's now the third time the leading actress in an Von Trier film won the Best Actress in Cannes. As for an Oscar nomination I hope so since I'd this looks like the most accessible film that Von Trier made that audience can enjoy so fingers crossed.

After Lar's work on Antichrist, yeah, I confess I'll HAVE TO see this film. It also touches on a subject that has a lot of fear for me. It'll be interesting.

It came out in August here, it's a great film.

The opening with slow-motion eerie visuals that look more like paintings than images is both beautiful and hypnotic.

The movies goes on to depict the family relations around this newly-wed couple in a very intimistic yet emotional way, and all the actors are great in it.

It's a no-brainer, but I'll say it anyway to all those unfamiliar with Von Trier's work, don't just read the pitch and go in there expecting The Day After Tomorrow 2 - Wedding Gone Wrong.

It's a well-crafted piece of visual poetry put on screen.

I thought Antichrist was a really good movie, though I'd never see it again for obvious reasons.

Saw Melancholia last night and at first I didn't think much of it other than the good performances and great cinematography. But as the minutes passed by the more and more the movie was stuck in my head. I loved it.
I'm rooting for Kirsten Dunst to garner an Oscar-nomination, but she wasn't even nominated in the Spirt Awards which surprised me.

I saw this a week ago. I thought it was intriguing in concept and did a really good job of terrifying the audience with its overbearing since of doom and nihilism. But I found its cynicism, and shallow worldview off-putting. I didn't see Dunst's arc as one of enlightenment, but one of continual selfishness. Still the visuals, acting and use of Wagner was hypnotic for the most part.
