Yeah, like the scene where Stark's sitting at the table after Coulson's death. Also, the scene where Loki places his scepter on Tony's chest and nothing happens. I guess they wanted to add the element of surprise to that scene, but still... it was noticeable.

If only the one on the right was green...

Seriously, I hope Feige is listening, because the chemistry was phenomenal. They need to have a movie together. Even if it's a road trip movie, don't care. Just replace Gallifianakis with Ruffalo digitally in Due Date and you have a masterpiece.

His relationship with Pepper was important and made a powerful impact, although it was shown briefly. Good stuff, hope Shane Black keeps this character development for IM3.
Agreed. I liked the fact that in a lot of scenes, Tony wasn't too RDJ like. He was well rounded emotionally in this film.

After what Feige said about Iron Man not needing another origin movie for a reboot, I started getting worried that Marvel will replace RDJ if both sides can't agree on a contract extension. There's nobody in this world that I rather play IM than him, and I hope Marvel/Feige realize that and give RDJ whatever he asks to get him back. I can see the IM franchise going beyond 3 films. It's going to be a cash cow for Marvel for as long as RDJ stays on.

Well, I don't think I want to see an IM4-5-6. I'd be all for him being a guest in other flicks, though. And, of course, A2-3.

But RDJ is still their main star and the name who brings the msot money. Until that changes, I think there's nothing to worry about.

Well, I want to see an IM XV, thanks. I want the whole MCU to continue ad infinitum. The day RDJ is replaced is a day I'll stay in bed mourning, but then I'll get over it and continue to enjoy Iron Man. Don't get me wrong, RDJ is great. He got me into the MCU. But there's other great actors out there.

Let me rephrase, I'm sorry. You'll still disagree with me, but: I'm not sure I want to see RDJ's IM in more solo films. And I agree that the MCU doesn't have to be rebooted after A3.

However, and I think you'll agree here, if they replace one actor, it sours the whole team after Avengers. Norton/Ruffalo was a close call but now we've seen them together. IMO, they need to keep them all until A3 and then recast them altogether, to retain a sense of continuity between phases.

And I've already suggested a Star Trek kind of sequel/prequel/reboot where we have the same characters, younger again (especially IM and Banner), ready to do adventures with clean slate without cancelling the events of the current MCU.

Okay, I have a question.

We're all talking about Downey Jr. and his increasingly salary. Let me take a step back and ask since Downey Jr.'s career was sorta fine prior to Iron Man and post well documented troubles.

In a way, this role gave him a chance, revamping his career and to prove himself.

Do you think that he would now make extreme demands that could cost him the job, knowing how easily other actors from the collection of films have been replaced? You think that after them sticking their necks out for him he'd eventually go into full diva mode? I remember a couple of interviews over the past couple years when he seems kind of aware of this and his responses had it in the subtext.

Please, feel free to let me know if I'm over thinking this.

I don't think so. The vibes I've gotten from RDJ all this time starting from 2008 is that he'll be honorable when they treat him right, but he'll be a douche when they screw him or his movie over. I think we and they are safe for now.

Rebooting an actor (or two or three, lol) will be difficult, no doubt about that. That doesn't mean, though, that it'll be impossible. And when the alternative is to retire the character(s), then I'm all for re-casting.

Just think about it: Re-booting the whole MCU? Doing all the origins all over again, the Avengers team-up, the whole she-bang? Just because new actors are playing the characters? It'll become repetitive. I'll go out on a limb and say that audiences will accept re-casts more easily than that.

Also, yeah, you're right: I'll disagree with not wanting more solo Iron Man movies. Tony Stark's story is far from told. I want to continue to see him evolve. If he'll look differently along the way at one point, I'll accept it.

That'll also open the door to doing pre-quels, as long as they continue the MCU continuity, so I guess we're agreeing there.

I'm talking about a total recast, you realize that. If one of 'em goes, they all go, whether they wanted to or not.

For sure, hence my total recast idea. So as not to reboot the MCU. What I wouldn't want is Chris Evans as Cap one day, with Farrell as Stark, Hemsworth as Thor, Ejiofor as Fury, Scarlet as Widow, some other guy as Hawkeye, etc. I'd rather they go everyone or no-one.

No, you misunderstand me again. RDJ as IM solo movies. I 'm not gonna be bummed if they announce IM4 with RDJ in 2016, but I wouldn't mind RDJ doing IM3, then guesting in other solo MCU movies, then A2 and 3. Then recast and continue IM's story.

Ah, okay. That'll teach me not to respond to posts while using the greater part of my brain for work, lol. Sorry.

I don't think total recasts will be necessary, but I'll still take them over a reboot. The two Chrises still have a good twenty years in them in the MCU, so why recast them, just because RDJ is getting on in years? It could be a gradual changing of the guard, if only because a mass recast may feel like a reboot. Keeping familiar faces will help keep a sense of continuity.

So, the scenario you describe would be one I'd actually be able to live with.

And I wouldn't mind RDJ going on beyond IM3 (as long as he wants to do it, of course). Stark aging isn't as difficult to swallow as, say, Thor aging. He's in his late 30s even in the comics, so... Also, they've been de-aging RDJ digitally since IM1 (in one scene at least), so there's no reason they can't continue to do so.

There's one shot of him in the suit, just after he rescued the fighter pilot, where he's smiling at something Rhodey said. I always felt that all of RDJ's wrinkles around his eyes should have been much more pronounced in that shot.

I'll edit this post with a link to a picture if I find one.

Edit: it's a little dark, but you can see absolutely no lines under his eyes here: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_aaVprncJva...Picture+15.png

I'll be prepared to bet that it's a digital touch-up. When he smiles, he normally looks like this: http://celebkids.whyfame.com/files/2..._downey_jr.jpg

Yes, he is getting older. I noticed a lot of white hairs. Pretty soon our Tony will end up looking more like Reed Richards. But I'd rather they stop doing the movies rather than recast them for more. There are some people you can't change for a part. Johnny Depp for Jack Sparrow, for example. RDJ is Stark Incarnate. To cast someone else would be to defy the laws of physics.

I disagree. RDJ is more RDJ than he is Tony Stark. He's entertaining, but not irreplaceable.

There may be no one that can play Tony Stark quite like Downey can, but there are certainly other suitable actors who can bring other interesting elements to the character.

By the time Robert Downey Jr. is done playing Iron Man, the character should be maturing into a more serious, driven individual anyway, so hopefully there will be a bit less "manic egomaniac" to the character.

Guard is right. We've only seen Tony for the first (approximately) 2 years of his stint as Iron Man...so he's still fairly fresh and there's plenty of room for further maturing on his part.
