Default "Director's Cut": The Official Matthew Vaughn Thread

Quote:
In a move that may tilt the axis of fanboys worldwide, Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn is in talks to direct X-Men: First Class for Twentieth Century Fox. Why is this so bizarre? Because Vaughn is the very director who turned down directing X-Men: The Last Stand back in 2005 after he had already negotiated his deal with the studio. (Fox later hired Brett Ratner to helm the most successful of all X-Men films.) Vaughn went on to direct the disappointing Stardust for Paramount and, just two weeks ago, released the well-reviewed R-rated Kick-Ass. Of course, considering Vaughnís history with the X-Men franchise, he could very well turn down the First Class offer, as well (sources say the studio is also speaking with other possible directors). Should a deal come together, however, Vaughn would be helming an origin story of the X-Men crew, one that tells the story of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and the other X-Men in their younger years, played by younger actors. (No word yet on whether Hugh Jackman would reprise his role as Wolverine since his character doesnít age as the others do.) The script comes from Jamie Moss based on Bryan Singerís treatment. Though the studio had wanted Singer to direct once again, the director is only signed on to produce, since heís preoccupied with directing Jack the Giant Killer for Warner Bros.

This is 2005 all over again

Interesting tidbit from Deadline:

Quote:
I hear the studio also looked at Daniel Espinosa, Rupert Sanders and Jonathan Mostow, among others.
Update from Deadline:

Quote:
Am told Vaughn's negotiations have been touch and go, and sources close to the director said he's passing. Let's see if that holds true.

We'd be lucky to have him. He's a genius. But, after the way they treated him back in '05, I just don't see it happening. Unless he can negotiate a contract to his liking.

Yeah, when I read this I thought there'd be no chance Vaughn signs up. It'd be like asking Rothman to punch him in the gut one more time creatively.

Vaughn should direct Deadpool, he showed he could balance violence and humor while still telling a good story/developing characters pretty damn well in Kick Ass. Hes a good choice for either. But I think Deadpool would be a better choice for him. Im surprised Fox didnt approach him for that actually.

IESB also adds Timur Bekmambetov to the list of names. After Voughn, I think he's the next best choice.

Deadline add these directors:

Quote:
Fox continues its search, talking to a strong list of directors that includes Timur Bekmambetov, Louis Leterrier, David Slade, Daniel Espinoza and Carl Erick Rinsch. A decision will be made next week on the director with an eye toward a late summer or early fall start.
Here's Carl Erick Rinsch's amazing short film. I really want him to direct First Class.

Matthew Vaughn would be an excellent choice as I've loved all his films to date, especially Kick Ass. As long as this doesn't mirror what happened with X3, and he would actually accept or they get a similarly great director, then I'd be happy.

Wow, that was really cool. I wouldn't mind seeing his take on an X-Men film.

I just hope they don't go with the guy who directed Wanted. I hated that movie.

Guess Vaughn already passed.

http://aintitcool.com/node/44885

Quote:
Borys Kit's Heat Vision Blog reports that while it is true Fox offered X-Men: First Class to Matthew Vaughn, he has already passed. Smart move.

Daniel Espinosa, who directed SNABBA CASH, is apparently the new golden child and has met with a ton of Execs about a multitude of projects and Kit says he's one of the top contenders for the "franchise reboot" that is X-Men: First Class.

Espinosa has also met with Leonardo DiCaprio about PRISONERS, Universal about a thriller called SAFE HOUSE and Benicio del Toro for a crime flick called MAKING JACK FALCONE.

That sounds about right. I'd warn Mr. Espinosa, though... Foreign director, hot ****, X-Men... Look what happened to Gavin Hood on WOLVERINE... just sayin'...

Convenient that Fox unleashes a random list of hopefuls the week where we get all this news from other companies. If they want attention you'd think they'd seek out a more open time to release news. They are hardly stealing anyone's thunder with a crap list like that.

Fox didn't release anything, It was first reported by EW about Vaughn and then on Deadline and HeatVision. It's all sources.

The list isn't that bad, actually. There's some talented directors on there.

Information probably provided by people within the company. And if Sanders and Mastow are some of the names, that's not a great list by any stretch. I am not familiar with either Sanders or Espinosa but they have limited experience and appear to be guys Fox can heavily influence.

Or by the reps of the people they're talking to. Works both ways, you know.

you know whats happening...

they tried to get Singer, he wont commit to direct now is producing. They tried to hook Vaughn and hes playing no ball...

They wont choose Ratner again so...

were now at a point where we're going to see the fall of this franchise.

We maybe coming to an end to x-men sooner than we thought.

The longer they play musical chairs with this "Now he's in, now he's out" business, the more I believe they will start from scratch. Wolverine 2 is a given but that franchise will probably deal less and less with the larger X-Men picture they have established. I say kill the project and commit to X-4 or a reboot.

X-Men 4 all the way! Doing a First Class movie is pointless since they can't even use the original 5 members.

Agreed, they should just move ahead with X-4. Unless they really have a story worth telling with First Class I dont see a need for it other then the studio milking the franchise for more cash.

Well in fairness, only one person was ever "in" so far, and he's still staying on in a producer role. Vaughn was never offically in this time, he was just one of the people that was offered the job and passed.
