Default Achievements and Trophies

So, I've been curious as to how people look at these things. I remember in the past the cry for an achievement-like system for the PS3. Even with it I sometimes see people (not usually here, but other places) say they still prefer the 360 achievements over the PS3 trophies, even though they're more or less the same thing. Of course, then there's others who don't care at all.

So, I thought I would make a poll and see how the other Hypesters felt about achievements and such. Do you think of them useless, do they add replay value for you, do you base multiplatform title buys on which achievement system you prefer?

For me, I really can take or leave them. They can add some replay for games that I really enjoy, but can't say I'll go after them if the game isn't something I'm totally into. I don't distunguish much between the 360 achievements and the PS3 trophies.

I like achievements, and I only really do them for the 360 but that's because I don't own a PS3.

I've stopped caring so much lately after spending way too much time grinding out really boring achievemnts for games I didn't care for, so I pulled back a bit.

I now only care about 100% achievements on games that I love playing anyways. The rest can come and go, but I won't kill myself on them.

If I have a game, I try to get all the trophies. They do add replay value as Im finding myself 100% games and playing them multiple times now and on the hardest setting, stuff Ive never really done before. Some are just too frustrating and time consuming though and dont feel its worth the time or effort so I leave them alone. Overall, I find them fun and personal goals added to games beyond simply completing them

Do I base multiplatform games on them? Sometimes. I only have a PS3 and PC but tend to go with the PS3 version for the trophies on some games.

I would say I prefer the trophies over achievements bc the PS3 is my primary gaming platform. I dont even have 1000 achievement points and dont find myself caring for them in the games I have that do use the system

Good topic.

Here's how I approach them. I don't care about them insofar as I don't look for them. I don't actively seek them out. When I pop in a new game I don't open the achievements. I look at achievements as a nice surprise for doing something cool or challenging. I don't really care about my gamerscore either. I'm actually a little embarassed by it.

Yes, I find I enjoy earning achievements more than trophies. I think it's the sound more than anything. It's satisfying to hear that "pop" when you kill a boss or something. The trophy "chime"... not so much. World of Warcraft also has a good achievements sound.

I do think they add replay value though. Especially the ones that get you to play the game in a different way. I might look at them and try to get some that seem fun to do on my second playthrough.

It may seem weird, but I use the achievement system to see my progress in a game. If I want to know how close I am to beating a game, I'll look at the achievements to see how far I am from the game completion achievement. Also, I like the sound it makes whenever you get an achievement (just thought I'd throw that out there lol)

When Trophies were introduced, I was really excited and wanted to get as many as could, but I got over it pretty fast. I still feel a sense of awesome when I unlock one or several at a time, but I don't have to get every one of them. In fact, the only game I felt the need to platinum was Uncharted 2, because of how amazing it is.

trophies don't really add any replay value for me, when I first play a game, I just play thru it and don't even worry about trophies, if I find the game to be very good and worthy of several playthru's, then I'll check out the trophy list and say hey let me try doing that, and even try getting the platinum if it doesn't involve multiplayer trophies or just any that would take way too much time, but the addition of trophies themselves doesnt add any replay value for me, if the game itself is good, I'll play thru it again regardless of wether it has trophies or not, I've completed mgs4 over 50 times already lol, and if the game is sub-par or average, then I don't really want to play it again, so I don't care about the trophies in that case, I can't speak for achievements since I only have a ps3 but I see no reason why it would be different for that

I don't really get the deal with Trophies/Achievements. I'm playing Resident Evil 5 with a friend a lot and he's trying to earn all those Trophies. As I was playing online with him, he told me he'd give me all those different eggs, so I'd get the Throphy for it. I just said "Dude... I honestly don't give a crap." Or when he told me other times what to do to get additional Throphies, "Dude... I still don't give a crap."

I take the stance, they could vanish tomorrow and I wouldn't care.
