Default iPod Troubles

So I was given a used iPod a few months ago and tried to sync it to my computer but something was wrong. Error messages flashed, one second my computer would detect it, the next, it wouldn't, etc. I took it to an Apple store, they said it was past warranty (it's an older iPod, not sure which gen) and that they couldn't do anything about it.

I took it to a computer repair shop today and they told me the software was corrupted and reset it for me. They said this should fix my problems, charged me $30 and sent me on my way. So I tried to sync it to my computer when I got home and now my computer doesn' t detect the iPod at all. It's charged, I have an updated iTunes, I restarted the computer and iPod several times, and still nothing. Is there another problem that I/the computer repair shop couldn't see or was I ripped off? Can it be fixed and if so, how do I go about doing it?

I don't know how to fix it but you got seriously ripped off.

An ipod resetting is done by the click of one button, and isn't hard at all.

Ugh. Are you sure? Does that clear all the data (songs, pics, etc.) on it? I took it back there today and told them what happened and they've been looking at it for the past two hours.

No but thanks. He said his iPod appears as the C: drive but my iPod doesn't appear in My Computer at all.

when you connect it does it make the sound of plugging in the usb? If it does, it might be in disk management and need activated.

Hi,

Make sure that you've tried the Five R's. They are: Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall and Restore. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape. If your iPod is frozen and won't turn on or maybe won't respond. If you think you have hardware problems Run the iPod Diagnostics. Sometimes it is helpful to manually set iPod disk mode and then reset it to normal operation. While we're not sure why this can sometimes correct problems - just walk through the simple steps indicated. No matter which iPod model you're using, if you're having issues installing iTunes on your Mac or Windows computer select your issue below and follow the steps to try to resolve it.

Thanks

It doesn't make any sound. The computer doesn't detect it all, except one time the other day where I got a quick pop up from windows messenger saying something along the lines of "There was a problem installing new hardware." The pop up disappeared and I never got the message again.

I've tried the 5 R's multiple times but to no avail. How do I go about manually setting it to disk mode or running iPod Diagnostics?

Speaking of iPod troubles, my 5th gen iPod died a few days ago. I've had it for 4 1/2 years. I can hear the hard drive whirl and click, but it can't acces anything and I get the little sad ipod face.

I've read online that its usually just a loose cable and I've sent it in to a 3rd party repair center for 23 bucks. I don't think I'd buy a new iPod given their price range.

Well, my last iPod question went unanswered for well over a year. Let's see if this one fairs any better.

I want to transfer ONE song from my iPod to my iTunes. I know how to transfer all the files on the iPod over but, I don't need them all. Just the one song. However, the coding for the songs on the iPod make it seemingly impossible to figure them out. Without playing the 882 songs one by one until I find it, that is.

Can anyone help here?

Any suggestions? I called Apple, but since it's past it's one year warranty, they want me to pay just to talk to them about it.
Maybe you damaged the port where you plug the charging cable into it or it probably needs a new internal battery.

It actually started working fine again.

Any thoughts on the new question?

Is there any way that it can help to find your i-pod if you loose it? I lost 2 i-pods. This one I just bought even smaller than the other ones... I will try to take care of it. I know I am dreaming but it would be really nice to have a system like you could follow your id number of your i-pod while someone is listening it and all that...

Let the ipods battery completely drain and then charge it to full. Reset it and let the battery go and recharge it again. Then try sync it to itunes and avoid updating to new versions.

Anyone have an Ipod jack in there car? I recently got a new car and bought my first Ipod a few weeks ago but when I plugged in my Ipod it was only playing the same 4-5 songs. I tried pushing numerous buttons near the car stereo/cd player but could only skip between those same songs.

Anyone else have this problem?

Did you figure out the problem?

Are those songs in a category to themselves or something like a favorites or most played songs? Maybe you should try changing the settings in the Ipod itself.

Thanks for replying!

Yeah, I figured it out quite some time ago. My dumb ass thought the charger cable was also for playing it in your car when you set your stereo option to Aux. My sister face palmed and told me that I need to buy a different cord that plugs in where the headphones go.

My sister can't use her iTunes account anymore because it was set up on my parents computer which recently took a dump.

Is there a way for her to hook up her iPod to my account to transfer some of my songs on hers without messing up my iPod when I go to use it?

yeah it won't mess it up since they are separate devices. Was all of her music/library lost with your parents computer? or does she have an Apple ID so she can log onto your computer and access those songs that she downloaded from the iTunes store?

One thing that will be a little problem if she does that, the songs that she downloaded from the iTunes store, will now appear in your Purchased playlist and if you syncing every piece of music that you got in your library to your iPod those songs will now appear on your iPod.

speaking of iPod problems, having a problem with my Nano 7th Gen, it keeps shutting down very sporadically. I may have to bring it my local Apple Store.

Try the 5 R's first, if it doesn't work try charging it with a different cable/charger, if that still fails then go to the Apple Store.

I've been using my 4th Gen Ipod Nano for 6 years now and I haven't encountered any problem with it.
