Default After Japan, what else could they do with Wolverine?

We know that Wolverine 2 will be taking place in Japan, but as far as a sequel that still fits in with the continuity of the X-Men series, where could Logan go next?

Personally, I can only really see them dropping the whole X-Men Origins title, and starting a new Wolverine movie series - not a reboot, but an entirely different series that takes place after X-Men: The Last Stand. Since X-Men 4 seems like it might never happen at this rate, it'd make sense to continue the ongoing stories of the most popular mutant without having to be chained to keeping everything bogged down in the world of prequels. This could allow some cameos from the established X-Men actors from the first three films, as well as toy with the option of Wolverine finding out his past for good, thus making the whole series come full circle.

According to Xavier in X-Men, 15yrs pass from when Logan loses his memory until the point he meets him, so there is plenty of time to do another sequel after the Japan movie set within this time period. or even more.
I'd want him to show up in Madripoor for the 3rd movie, O'Donnell's bar, the Tyger, Roughhouse, Bloodscream, Archie Corrigan....do it ike Wolverine in Bogart's Casablanca, and it could be great.

I'd rather just see an X-Men 4 after that, rather than Logan in post X3 solo adventures. I'm not sure what there would be more chance of getting, maybe an X4, since Singer mentioned that to Shuller Donner to keep that for him if it happens.

I was thinking of Madripoor adventures as well, or maybe a team akin to X-Force/Alpha Flight catching wind of Logan to help them stop a threat (possibly Wendigo), and it could certainly work out that Logan helps them reluctantly, but leaves the team after the mission is complete, only to disappear off the radar until we see him again in 'X-Men', but multiple sequels always run the risk of screwing up the continuity of the previous films. Look at the small missteps that X-Men Origins took, that contradict some of what was established in the other films. The minor liberties that the director and writers take (such as Logan's escape from Weapon X, his relationship to Sabretooth, and the means by which he loses his memory) make me think that we might just endanger the first three films' credibility if the directors want to go in their own direction. If they wanted to bring Sabretooth back, how would they explain how Logan doesn't remember him? Another adamantium bullet? If he runs into kid versions of the other X-Men or villains, it begs the question of how nobody remembers their past encounters. Logan's the one with memory problems, and it should stay that way, even though I get the feeling that more clever devices like the 'magic bullet' would be a running theme to further pollute Logan's memories.

Madripoor would be the wrong direction to take, its a good story i give you that but if your following in the movie verse it would be far too different a story to have, besides they will probably want a sabretooth confrontation

As per the reasons Squidboy was saying, they can't really bring in Sabretooth again. I don't get why people keep suggesting him in the 'characters you want to reappear' thread either, he won't be back, theyy did the 'confrontation' in the first solo movie. They need to move on and use different characters. I don't see any reason why Madripoor couldn't be used, he's travelling around for 15yrs globetrotting. so after he leaves Japan he takes a turn into South East Asia, simple.

there has to be a reason, there has to be leads why Japan it makes some sense for Japan i mean you could look at Logan picking up pieces of the weapon x project. One being silver samuri being a secrete invester who helped create wolverine or something...

Its not really about why sabretooth should return, its more of how many fans want him to return. Personally i think we need to explain why sabretooth became from what he did in wolverine to x1, that needs to be a least addressed, in either this or have him pop up in first class.

Madapoor doesnt really have a connection to his story other than he somehow found himself there... i wouldnt waste madapoor on that...

He doesn't remember Weapon X, so as a man without a past and without any memories of who he is, he could have just wandered around the world to find himself (which could be shown in the first few minutes of the movie - think Batman Begins). He ends up in Japan, where he takes a liking to Mariko and decides to try and settle down and pick up the pieces with someone to support him. Then everything goes to ****, and we have the rest of the movie's story.

I think Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is a little smarter than his comic book counter part...

In my mind, wolverine would be following threads to find out more about his past. You gotta remember what happend to wolverine after he was shot...

Lets see, he awakes on 3 mile island which has been destroyed. He doesnt know how or why. He meets Gambit who reveals his name is Logan and that the children are safe and they have to get the hell out of there before the police arrive. Logan also knows that his dog tags say Wolverine and thus must be an alias. The only other information he knows is that he saw a deceased Silverfox, who he doesnt know or know the name of. Now although he had lost his memory he seemed to have some feeling towards her but he doesnt know who he is, so im guessing his natural instict kicked in and he realised he is a loner and he must find his own way which is why he didnt follow Gambit. other than knowing that guy knows his name Gambit is the only link to his past before his memory. So lets analize these factors...

Gambit - he was imprisoned by striker for two years, and probably underwent testing of some kind until he escaped. Because Gambit as a character is a thief we can gather that he knows of Stryker and some information as to what he was doing, probably just a few words of information like Weapon X, probably a few investers in the project which could be across the seas. anything he could use that he could sell for a profit really... - Now for Wolverine, he would then know that there was something called Weapon X project, William Stryker (Think of this, in X2 wolverine recognised Stryker by name during the mansion invasion... which suggest between the wolverine movie and x2 he remembered Stryker vaguely) So what we can gather is that his first threads would be to find out about the weapon x project, who was william stryker... Gambit really cant answer that question other than what happend at 3 mile island but lets say what if Gambit knew about investers of the programe say like people from Japan, Germany, Russia? which could lead into stories like Silver Samuri, Hydra and Omega Red. Gambit also can tell Wolverine about the kids that were saved by a bald man with a helicopter... thats, thats really a small percentage... type in bald man, mutants and helicopter in a computer in there universe you would probably find Professor Xavier somewhere on google...

Next thread...

Who was the deceased woman? - Well we know her as silverfox but wolverine didnt know her but felt he did... so im guessing that a mysterious woman is someone that is going to haunt his memory... well there is a possibility this could be explored, Wolverine might return to 3 mile island to try and retain some of his memory... The only other person who would be able to explain who she was is her sister Emma - the younger Emma Frost. See if your sister went missing last scene at 3 mile island im guessing Emma would return there on the odd occassion, they dont even have to meet there, they could inccidently meet in a bar near by and she recognises him, or maybe Emma gets arrested for trespassing on 3 mile island and wolverine helps her break out of prison or something along the lines of this... my point being she could return for the purpose of helping wolverine remember his past if only for knowing who that woman was.

Then there is Sabretooth - now although Wolverine didnt meet him after he lost his memory, im sure Sabretooth would love to torment a memory lost Wolverine, although that would have to be a seperate story where probably sabretooth loses his memory and ends up like he looks like in x-men 1...

Then you have 3 mile lsland - What was it, why was he there, and did he destroy it, thats some of the questions wolverine would be thinking... so i would imagine any information he could get on it would lead him to finding out his past...

Dogtags - he is canadian... im guessing that would be something he would want to explore, its probably where he would find Sabretooth...

So if we were to mirror this with stories in the comics...

We have Japan - Silversamuri - probably yuriko and lady deathstrike, maybe sunfire and sunpyre... even Cyber i guess.
We have Russia - Omega Red - a younger Colossus perhaps
We have Germany - Hydra - Viper - X-23,
We have Canada - Alpha Flight - Sabretooth - High Evolutionary...

So i think we have four stories that would fit into that relm...

which is why Madapoor in my oppinion wouldnt fit, theres just nothing about his past there and the sequels are going to most likely have wolverine trying to find out about his past.

There's nothing in his past to suggest Japan, Russia, or Germany either, but if the writers wanted to come up with something, they could easily follow the same trend you did by making him follow the right lead to the right place and allow the story to flourish from there.

Not directly but think about it this way, If Wolverine hears about Weapon X. i'm guessing he is going to find as much information as possible... the first would being anyone who was involved with the projected.

Gambit being a theif and one who escaped stryker probably would know that the Weapon X project was funded by say by characters like the silver samuri that leads you to Japan. Even if gambit doesnt know that gambit will still know of the word Weapon X and from that if wolverine was tracking down anything to do with it he would more likely come up with the US rivals of the weapon x project like Omega Red which leads to russia and then Hydra which is Germany.

So they have a better place in the sequel because there are threads for them...

Theres just no reason for madapoor. Unless you did a wolverine story that took place after x-men 3

After W2 I think he will be in X4 and that will be it for this version of Wolverine. Hopefully W2 will be more adult based and not so child friendly as the last, it was such a let down for all the hype I had for it to come out feeling like Fox, yet again ruined something that could have been amazing.

I'd say Russia. During the 1980's. Have Wolverine face off against Omega Red.

Rocky IV with mutant powers makes an automatic win.

I think it would be ridiculous to come out with a 3rd Wolverine movie when there isn't even a 4th X-men. No offense.

I'm pretty sure Jackman and co have said they were set on doing a Wolverine solo trilogy, there is 15yrs between the end of WXMO and X-Men1, so plenty of time for stories.
Ideally, yeah, it would be great to get an X-Men4, but they wrapped up that story into a trilogy basically because it was getting so expensive and logistically difficult to get all the actors back.
At least we are getting prequels with the Wolverine movies and First Class. Maybe one day they will do an X-Men4.

edit: and the thing is, Wolverine has had his own regular solo comic series fro twenty years now. He is a character in his own right with his own mythology seperate from the X-Men, so it makes sense that he gets to have his own solo series of movies.

Not to mention the fact that Logan was the star of the trilogy, so to cut costs and to make him the center of every movie, they moved onto his origins.

Not really when they fill it with non characters for crap singers to play who probably got paid alot to do nothing.

He may have had an ongoing for a long time (though what they could be doing with him all this time sure beats the hell out of me), but that doesn't mean that *I* have to wanna see 3 movies about him. Especially when so much of the X-MEN trilogy (?) revolved around him. So many interesting characters went to waste in favour of giving him more screen time. If they knew he was gonna get his own movies why did they do that?

Yeah, I sympathise, I hate how they wasted Cyclops in that trilogy. But, I am not surprised how it played out with Wolverine being centre stage. they didn't know X-Men 1 was going to be such a big hit, or if there would be further movies, so they kicked off with the story of him coming into the fold, and how he had no memory/had been experimented on by persons unknown, so they had to resolve that in X2, and it was a good way of linking it into the overall story of the government coming down on mutants.

when Singer and Marsden jumped ship for Superman, that pretty much sealed Cyclop's deal for being heavily involved in the Phoenix Saga , which was a mistake. Politics got involved in that, Rothman hates Cyclops apparently.
So, wolverine had to be center stage once again in X3, as he was sort of involved with Jean, and Cyclops was out of the picture.

Lots of factors were involved, and Wolverine is the only X-Man who was ever going to get his own solo movie, given he is the only one popular enough to sustain his own solo comic.

But, we are getting a new trilogy of X-Men adventures without Wolverine, so it's all good. Cyclops will feature heavily presumably this time, as he should have before.
