This happened to me. Read my posts in the "PS3 broke?" thread for good tips on what to do from here.

Join the club. Ive been PS3-less for almost a month. Im about this close to buying a new one and will go on the hunt for one tomorrow, but I have not see them in stores for months. A Best Buy opened up near me last month and I saw some when it launched but thats about it.

Hmm.. I'm gunna buy a new one. :/ It costs almost as much to get the damned thing fixed, and I have $200 in BBuy rewards points.
I tried taking my HDD out but I think I was about to strip the screw so I stopped. I'm pretty upset.

It does sounds like a YLOD.
I don't know a whole lot about it, but from what I've heard it's an overheating issue. I've read elsewhere that ppl have fixed it by opening it up and resodering something, but that voids your warranty, so I wouldn't recommend lol. The only thing I can recommend, and again I have no clue if it works, but I've seen some say you can hold in the eject button as you power it on and sometimes it'll boot. Now obviously if heat caused something to unsoder then that won't help. However it might help, just something I read. Anyway, sorry to hear, and g'luck with it. Like others said, even if you didn't buy a warranty, all PS3's come with a 1 year warranty. So if it hasn't been a year since you purchased it I'd just call Sony up.

I found one of the newer models (2101A) at a Target today and bought it. Im still waiting to hear about the repair to my 60gb but if that cant get fixed, I'll keep thsi new one. If they manage to get it working, I'll return this new one

This happened to me a few weeks ago. I had it for around 3 years before it finally died out. I'm going crazy not having it around right now. Not getting enough hours at work to get enough money for a new one. It really sucks this happened I feel your pain.

do NOT try to get any of the screws out of the HDD tray while it's warm from use. I almost stripped all the screws on the tray. I was able to get it out with the help of a friend. It was because i was impatient and it was warm from using the system.

Re: Help ASAP please??
NOTE: unless you backed up the data on that drive you are removing as soon as you try to run it in the other PS3 the FIRST thing it will do is ask you to format it before it can be used. there is NO way to get data off of a PS3 HD if it has the YLOD. you cannot plug it in a PC (it wont see it) or in an external enclosure plugged into a different PS3 (same thing).

Just a little update on my situation, it seems my PS3's motherboard went bad and only Sony can replace those, so it looks like I will b sending it to them next. Hopefully I will be able to get another 60gb back, but if not I guess I will have to settle for the Slim, (which are finally back in stock) |

Yes. Your PSN name isnt tied to 1 console. However you can only activate your PSN account on up to 5 systems. Assuming you dont have it active in 5 other places, you shouldnt have a problem

I got some great news. My PS3 came back from the 3rd party repair place I sent it too. They said they couldnt fix it, but I booted it up and it works. Worked long enough to get all important saves on a USB drive AND get a full HDD backup. It hasnt YLOD yet but the fan is still running really loud so I fear this may just be a temporary fix and debating on whether I should still send it in to Sony. I got the box they sent in for the repair and not sure what to do.
