It's because people online (fanboys) lack perspective.

Get Idris Elba in the foreground with a giant monster and giant robot fighting in the background with a naked woman on Elba's side, with explosions all around for good measure, and I would die a happy man.

This isn't a jab at other anime with mechs but the Gundam series easily has the most beautiful designs when it comes to mechs. Really hope Del Toro took a page from there.
Are you maybe talking about newer Gundams? I haven't really followed the modern series, but most of the Gundam I've seen is the older stuff, and I don't dig the look of those much at all. Very stiff and somewhat dull looking, I thought. I think Evangelion had some very interesting designs, and there was another show, too, much more recent that I forget that also had some very lovely designs.

I dunno, probably, but like I said, I haven't seen any Gundam series since....god, I don't know...Gundam Wing, I think it was called. They didn't look bad to me, but just kind of dull, outside a few standouts. I don't know, I guess I'm shallow, because I like the flashy looking stuff

I hope the mechs look something like the Eva Units from Evangelion.

I wouldn't mind if they looked like Gundams though.

Evangelion's aren't mecha. They are giant biological organisms covered in cybernetics and armor. So they're basically pilotable cyborgs. Just an FYI. As for the Jager's having looks that are comparable to Gundams, I sure as hell don't mind, (points to avatar). I'm a total Gundam nut. But I understand there are a lot of radical Gundam designs out there. Some from from early Gundam SEED, or the Universal Century would be cool. I think a design like Buster Gundam would be neat going up against kaiju.
