To compare something like Transformers to Pacific Rim would be like, well, comparing Transformers to Gundam/Evangelion, with a little Godzilla thrown in. The only similarities between the two are that they're robots who fight other beings/robots. That's about it.
And it's your final statement that basically points out how they're practically the same as far as movie projects are concerned. The long and the short of it is that it's still a giant robot action movie. Additionally, Transformers is a well-established, popular franchise. It stood to generate more interest in giant robot stories than I would expect Pacific Rim to do and what have we really seen in that vein since '07? A couple of alien invasion flicks, the upcoming Real Steel movie (at an extreme stretch) and news about studios vying for the rights of Voltron.

Gundam? Evangelion? BattleTech? Maybe one day, but not because Pacific Rim suddenly sparks studio executives into saying, "I know! We need a giant robot movie!"

According to this article that Bloody-disgusting posted Pacific Rim will undergo rewrites because of the situation in Japan so there's no attacks in Japan in the movie.
http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/23847

Quote:
According to our sources, Legendary has asked Del Toro to re-write the screenplay so that no attacks take place in Japan. The pic is to be set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.
But according to this article from AICN there's no truth to the story.

I've talked to a lot of folks that are working on this film and it will be a-****ing-mazing. I reached out to a couple of sources just a while ago to run Bloody-Disgusting's story - and there was genuine disbelief. No doubt, the rumor mill is cranking about this film, but it is moving full steam ahead!
But Bloody Disgusting put up an update.
Quote:
Update: AICN is attempting to debunk us, but unfortunately their sources are either wrong or lying. We stand behind our report as our sources are well in the know. This isn't just some "tipster". It's also worth noting Del Toro has been asked to make the change, and whether or not he complies has yet to be seen....
I don't know who have right but it would make sense if they do rewrite just that small change.

I think it's best if they change the location of the attacks. It's a small change so it's not a big deal.

Actually it could be because of Pacific Rim. Not saying it will, but Hollywood is a very "Monkey See, Monkey Do" type of town. If executives see that giant robot movies are huge, an executive will say that.

If it's done well, Pac Rim could be the ultimate love letter to Anime. That's why these rumors of WB trying to force del Toro to change the setting of the movie is sooo false.

It's also an international movie, so the monsters attack Europe and America as well.

If all else, keep the Japanese in. Maybe Japan was the first country to get attacked, but they don't have to show it. Thus that's why the Japanese are helping with their Gundum-esq mechs to defeat the monsters. They have to be a focal point of the film since it's such an homage to Japanese pop culture already.

Plus it will be 2013 by the time this movie is released, 2 years after the stuff. I won't say that people will be over it, but I don't think it would be disrespectful to do so.

Also the rumors of WB wanting to change the film into Godzilla is puzzling. First off, they already have a director for Godzilla, and second, I can't see del Toro wanting to do that, along with the screen writer (who is on twitter).

Though I have to admit, why have Godzilla if you have Pacific Rim? I dont know.

also, it has been stated that this is a movie being developed independently via Legendary. So WB isn't funding it..

Since the movie is about other groups from different countries in mechs helping Japan fighting off Kaiju, instead of erasing the "Japan" element from the script altogether, afraid that Japanese people will be offended due to the recent earthquake tragedy, embrace it as one of the driving forces of the film. If shown in a positive light, it could be used to celebrate Japan's preparedness and perseverance in light of the recent earthquake incident.

It would be awesome to have a scene where a Japanese group in a mech is fighting off a Kaiju, they get knocked down, get back up, take a few punches and shots at the Kaiju (showing that they can take it), and then have a few other mechs representing different countries (Germany, US, China, etc.) joining in the fight and standing with Japan to face off against the Kaiju. I'd imagine that would get quite a few cheers from the audience.

I don't see GDT resisting the change of location. The guy is a class act, not some shlock master.

So does anyone know if this has a go a head green light? Or is GDT destined to become the new Terry Gilliam?

I thought much the same thing in 2007. The trouble is it turned out to be a case of "Monkey Saw, Monkey Didn't".

Sons Of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam To Star in Guillermo Del Toro's 'Pacific Rim
Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Hunnam, best known for playing biker Jax Teller in Kurt Sutter's superb FX series Sons of Anarchy, is negotiating to star in Pacific Rim for director Guillermo del Toro. The Legendary Pictures film, scripted by Travis Beacham, is set in a future where giant malevolent creatures threaten to destroy the earth, city by city. To combat its annihilation, the planet must band together and use highly advanced weapons technology to eradicate the growing threat. So once again, Hunnam will be kicking some ass. Pacific Rim will be produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, along with del Toro. Callum Greene will executive produce. Legendary's running point on the picture, but it will be done through the company's overall agreement with Warner Bros. Pacific Rim surfaced as an important movie when del Toro focused his attention on it as his next film after Universal halted At the Mountains of Madness, which del Toro was going to make with Tom Cruise.
Hunnam just starred in the drama The Ledge, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and he just completed in Blackbird opposite Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde. Hunnam's repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

FYI to anyone who dismisses him as a pretty boy he was Patric in Children of Men, so he's definitely got the acting chops.

And he's in Sons of Anarchy. I second that he definitely has acting chops

I'd hardly call del Toro or this project near controversial. Also last I heard was that it's having rewrites that Japan won't be attacked much or at all. So he and Universal had disagreement for At the Mountains of Madness but it's the same for that, it's no way near controversial either.
