Paul Newman would beg to disagree, but yeah, he does.
Plus the fact that they're incredibly expressive, two classically-trained actors on their own!

James surprised me in this film and I believed he could pull off a young Xavier. Loved him since Wanted. I hope he returns in FC2.

He did a great job. Got a lil tired of the "my friend" he kept saying throughout the film. He sounded like a bargain car sales man or something.
Also, is it just me or was Charles kind of a perv with the ladies, especially after a few drinks lol.

I have to admit, the first time I heard he was cast as Xavier I wasn't too sure about it. I didn't know much about him except him being Mr. Tumnus and the lead in Wanted (and I had forgotten about it). But man, I became a HUGE FAN after watching First Class. He certainly exceeded my expectations. He's a good actor and extremely charming.
Him and Fassbender also got great chemistry. |

There's spitting game and then there's just taking advantage. This man was spitting game at all the ladies lol. I would've done the same and do so oh well lol. Yeah I didn't mean perv in a bad way, but he definitely reminded me of Quagmire lol.

It's not like he controlled her thoughts and made her ya know...do what he wanted. I guess he still has some ounce of morality, using his abilities to guess that girl's favorite drink or whatever. I mean, you can definitely respect and realize how much Xavier prides himself on the use and misuse of power later in his life, but it's interesting to see how he himself straddles that fine line of misuse at times.

I said this in my review of the film on another board, but it bears repeating here; McAvoy was perfectly cast as Xavier, and brought a gravitas to the role that really pays homage to Stewart's performance as the character but without being derivative. He was one of my favorite actors in the film, along with Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence, and January Jones, and really knocked things out of the park.
He definitely needs to return for any sequel(s), and it will be a shame if he doesn't. |

I agree. McAvoy actually surprised me. I think once we see him bald it will just cement the fact that he is Xavier now. Fassbender also surprised me, but mainly because I'm less familiar with him than McAvoy.

^ I watched it again yesterday and damn, he's amazing. I actually thought he was American when I watched it three years ago. I don't know if McAvoy is perfectly cast as Xavier or McAvoy can adapt into whatever character he's given.

Yup he's good at The Chronicles of Narnia too as a half-animal!
And I have seen Atonement but I don't really remember his acting but he got nominations in that movie.

Oh yeah. I forgot he was in Narnia. He was also in Dune, Atonement with Keira Knightley, Becoming Jean with Anne Hathaway and the last King of Scottland, which I haven't watched yet since I bought the dvd from a while back.
I think out of the film's I've seen, X-Men First Class is his best work to date. James better be back for a sequel.

If this were O.W.L. results I think James would have received and E for Exceeds Expectations. I liked Patrick Stewart as Xavier, but I never felt emotionally connected to him. That scene where Charles gets Erik to move the satellite dish...great acting. Really gets you to care about both of them. Amazing scene.

McAvoy and Fassbender have to come back for a sequel or there is no point in doing it.

He came really close, though. He got Golden Globe and Bafta's noms, and won other awards for it. I wish his acting - and the film itself - had been more recognized. ![]() I really love him in "Inside I'm Dancing" (in which he plays a young guy with muscular dystrophy and wheelchair-bound - some preparation for Xavier?) and BBC's modern version of "Macbeth". And "The Last King of Scotland" too, of course. I still have to watch "The Conspirator"...

So far I've seen him in Narnia, Atonement, Wanted, The Last King of Scotland, Gnomeo & Juliet, and The Conspirator...He seems to do well as far as picking roles.

I liked McAvoy's interpretation of young Xavier as a mild mannered, gentle, subtle, and calm person which I like for a telepath.
