Default U.s. Studios to remake films in japanese

June 10, 2010

Concerned about the declining box office for Hollywood films at the Japanese box office, at least three studios, 20th Century Fox, Paramount and Warner Bros., are remaking some of their classic films with Japanese casts, the London Daily Telegraph reported today (Thursday). Paramount Japan marketing director Hisamichi Kinomoto said that the studio is remaking Ghost with Japanese actress Nanako Matsushima in the Demi Moore role and Korean actor Son Seung Heon in Patrick Swayze’s part. “If the essence of that story appeals to Japanese, we should use it to attract new audiences,” he said. The Telegraph observed that while foreign films accounted for 73 percent of the Japanese box office in 2002, they accounted for just 43 percent in 2009.

So if they remake Training Day, will Godzilla not have sh** on him?

I think this is pretty cool and interesting decision even though a lot of the GA will be saying WTF when they see a trailer for a remake of Ghost and the actors aren't white. It's funny because Hollywood has been sticking it to a number of minorities in regards to casting for roles they should play but ends up going to a white person for a long time now.

This is weird that they would do this all of a sudden.

I think this is a pretty cool idea, I'd love to see Japanese takes on American movies. Like a Japanese Robocop!

Hey, looks like we may get some second chances on the bad action movies we've made in the past decade. I say they remake Shoot 'em Up

I sincerely hope that Whoopi Goldberg is still in the Japanese Ghost.

See, this I like. Someone should persuade Takashi Miike to do that.

I'll be honest, aside from the fact that I don't speak or understand Japanese, the Japanese aesthetic doesn't appeal to me all that much. Same goes for most foreign stuff.
