Helmed by Dynasty Warriors series developer Omega Force, Dragon Quest Heroes is an action-oriented spinoff in the same vein as the upcoming Hyrule Warriors. Sony also showed off a special Dragon Quest Metal Slime Edition PlayStation 4 console to accompany the game. It's unclear if the game or the special console are planned for North American release.

Dragon Quest Heroes And Dragon Quest XI Are Being Developed Simultaneously. September 9, 2014 . 4:43am

This week’s issue of Famitsu shares more information on Dragon Quest Heroes from series creator Yuji Horii.

Quote:

Earlier this month, Square Enix revealed Dragon Quest Heroes: The Dark Dragon and the Castle of the World Tree, an upcoming Warriors-style game for PS4 and PS3. This week’s issue of Famitsu shares more information from series creator Yuji Horii. [Thanks, Game Jouhou.]

The concept message behind Dragon Quest Heroes is “From small to large, the invasion of 100 monsters”. According to Horii, it all started when he was thinking about making an action-style Dragon Quest game, then decided to request Koei Tecmo to develop it.

The actual development for the game started last year with Square Enix handling the production and supervision, with Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force being in charge of its development.

According to the report, Koei Tecmo had prepared the scenario, but Yuji Horii, who has worked on most of the series’ scenario, has put in a good share of work as well.

As far as music goes, Dragon Quest series composer Koichi Sugiyama is the composer for the game, and will feature orchestrated arrangements of popular tunes from the series. And of course, the game will have the iconic level-up chime.

Finally, Horii also stated, “Dragon Quest XI is being developed simultaneously alongside Dragon Quest Heroes, but we’d like you all to play this title first to bring out enlivened feelings before going to the next title.” Additionally, you may recall that Square are also working on a new Dragon Quest Monsters game.

Dragon Quest Heroes is slated for release sometime in spring 2015 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. You can check out the game’s first trailer in our earlier report.

Dragon Quest XI in development alongside Dragon Quest: Heroes

Upcoming action RPG an invasion of one million monsters.

Famitsu this week features a new interview with Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii, offering new details on Square Enix and Koei Tecmo’s recently announced action RPG collaboration Dragon Quest: Heroes.
According to Horii, right around the time it became clear that he wanted to create an action-based Dragon Quest, he was contacted by Koei Tecmo, and thus asked them if they were willing to make it.
The concept behind the game is an invasion of one million Dragon Quest monsters of various shapes and sizes. The game’s giant monster battles are said to be inspired by Toukiden.
The game has been in development since last year at Omega Force under the production and supervision of Square Enix. The staff, who have a lot of love for both Omega Force and the Dragon Quest series, are bringing a lot of great ideas to the table, Horii said. The Dragon Quest creator has supposedly been pretty hands-on in development.
Heroes will offer various orchestrated arrangements from previous Dragon Quest games and composer Koichi Sugiyama. The “level up” sound will also return.
Finally, Horii said that the next numbered entry in the series—Dragon Quest XI—is currently also in development, but first, Square Enix wants you to play Dragon Quest: Heroes to build up excitement.
Dragon Quest: Heroes is due out for PlayStation 4 and PS3 in Japan in spring 2015.
Thanks, Sokuho@Hokanko.

Dragon Quest Heroes Introduces Its Main Characters And A Couple New Friends. September 17, 2014 . 4:01pm

Acht is the captain of the bodyguards who serve the king of Elsarze Castle.

Dragon Quest Heroes will have action like the Dynasty Warriors games, but will also include a number of Dragon Quest elements, including all kinds of past characters from the series. Gamer.ne.jp introduces us to the game’s world and heroes.

Similar to other games in the Dragon Quest series, the world of Dragon Quest Heroes has all kinds of different terrain. From grassy plains, to vast deserts and eerie forests, there will be all kinds of different places to visit.

The main hub is located at a place called the Elsarze Castle that has a giant tree at the heart of the location, which you can see on the upper-part of the above map. It seems like this has something to do with the “World Tree” part of the game’s title.

Below is a look at the main characters of Dragon Quest Heroes and a couple allies, all designed by Akira Toriyama.

Acht (male protagonist):

Acht is the captain of the bodyguards who serve the king of Elsarze Castle. Mankind and monsters used to coexist peacefully in these lands, but after a certain incident, an army of demons began attacking the kingdom. It remains unknown as to how it all started.

Mehr (female protagonist):

Dirk is the king who rules the Elsarze Kingdom, which is also the center of the world. He isn’t your typical king who sits back on his throne, as he prefers to fight in the frontlines of battles with his trained body. He is well-trusted and respected by his subordinates and citizens alike.

Julietta:
Julietta is a young genius who leads the magic research institute. She puts her talents to good use and supports the protagonist in all kinds of ways. Julietta will occasionally give you different inventions that will help out in combat as well.

In addition to characters like Terry from Dragon Quest VI and Alena from Dragon Quest IV, Dragon Quest Heroes will feature various other characters from the series, and you can catch some of them in the trailer that was revealed earlier this month.

A First Look At Dragon Quest Heroes’ Gameplay Footage. September 17, 2014 . 10:02pm

The video starts out with the hero Acht and some of his buddies taking out small-fry enemies along with the Dragon boss that has been around since the first Dragon Quest.

Quote:

Earlier today, we got a look at some of the key characters for Dragon Quest Heroes, an upcoming Dragon Quest action title. Square Enix have now provided a first look at some gameplay footage during Tokyo Game Show 2014. (Thanks, Game Kana)

The video starts out with the hero Acht and some of his buddies taking out small-fry enemies along with the Dragon boss that has been around since the first Dragon Quest. Acht uses some attacks that have been staple moves throughout the series as well.

The commentators mention that the boss is weak on his tail and face, so it seems like you won’t always be able to mash away through all your fights. There are also jumping actions, so there will likely be bosses later on with weak spots that are hard to reach without jumping.

Once they take out the dragon, they face a second wave of Golems, Dracky, Slimes, and all kinds of familiar monsters from Dragon Quest. These monsters seem to keep appearing out of nowhere, and this is where skills and magic gets put to good use.

However, keep in mind that there’s MP, so you won’t be able to Frizz and Bang your way out of these hairy situations. Instead, you can do what the player does at 3:40 when he goes into Tension mode.

The bottom-left shows a Tension gauge, which lets you go into “Super High Tension” mode once it reaches 100%. While in this mode, your speed increases and you can use special moves, like Gigaslash, which wiped out the entire field of enemies.

Dragon Quest Heroes is slated for release in Japan in spring 2015 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

The demonstration saw Akuto, Meer, and Dirk take on a Gigantes cyclops. Or in layman’s terms, a really big ogre. Unfortunately, Akuto doesn’t make it out alive.

Dragon Quest: Heroes has playable characters from previous games

Dragon Quest IV characters confirmed. And possibly Bianca.

Dragon Quest series characters, including Dragon Quest IV‘s Alena, Kiryl, Maya, as well as Dragon Quest VI‘s Terry, will be playable in Dragon Quest: Heroes, Square Enix announced during a stage event at the Tokyo Game Show.
Square Enix producer Ryota Aomi asked Niconico viewers which Dragon Quest V character they would like to be playable. A questionnaire appeared on screen and four options were given. When the results came in, almost 50 percent voted for Bianca. In response to this, Koei Tecmo producer Kenichi Ogasawara said they’ll have to “seriously consider” adding her to the game.
Moving on, the producers said that the PlayStation 4 version of Dragon Quest: Heroes will “run smoothly at 60 frames per second,” and its graphics are “beautiful enough to see the monster’s fur.”
The game stars dual protagonists Akuto and Meer. Players can select either at the start of the game, and depending on your choice, the story will partially branch. You can also switch between characters during battle. Elements and locations expected of a Dragon Quest game are also being prepared.
Finally, yesterday, Japanese blogs picked up on an interesting level difference in the two Dragon Quest: Heroes gameplay demos shown during Sony’s Tokyo Game Show stage events. In the first demo, the player was level eight. Dragon Quest VIII was the last game in the series on PlayStation. In yesterday’s surprise demo from series creator Yuji Horii, the player was level 11. Dragon Quest XI is currently in development for unannounced platform(s). Using this as evidence, blogs deduced that Dragon Quest XI is, in fact, in development for PlayStation 4. Ogasawara apparently playfully added a reference to the “level 11″ stuff becoming such a hot topic to Square Enix’s booth signage.
Dragon Quest: Heroes is due out for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Japan during spring 2015. Watch the full stage event below.

More previous generation Dragon Quest characters confirmed.

Jessica Albert and Yangus from Dragon Quest VIII will appear in Dragon Quest: Heroes, series creator Yuji Horii and Koei Tecmo general producer Kou Shibusawa have confirmed in this week’s Famitsu.
In an interview with the pair, Shibusawa describes the character selection process as being run predominantly by Horii, but nevertheless recalls specifically requesting at Jessica join the cast.
“We try to strike a balance among the characters in terms of jobs and weapons and whatnot, so by and large, we’ve left it up to you [Horii] to hash out who should appear,” Shibusawa explained. “But there was one character I just had to step in and implore be included and I said, ‘I want you to put Jessica in the game!’ My wife is always pushing me to be more assertive, so I thought I’d actually stand up and say something for once. (Laughs.)”
To that effect, Horii picked up the conversational baton, stating, “It’s fun to be able to bring these characters together from disparate games, especially ones that could never encounter one another in the normal games. Aside from Jessica, Angus will also be showing up to help represent the old geezer crew.”
Aside from Jessica and Angus, other Dragon Quest characters confirmed to appear include Dragon Quest IV‘s Alena, Kiryl, and Maya Mahabala, and Dragon Quest VI‘s Terry.
Dragon Quest: Heroes due out for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Japan this spring.

The new characters in question are Bianca Whitaker, Dragon Quest V protagonist’s childhood friend and also one of the wife choices. It is said that she’ll use some sort of bow as her weapon of choice to take on hundreds of Slimes.

The other character is Nera Briscoletti, one of the possible party members and wife candidates. As for Nera’s outspoken sister Debora, there hasn’t been any word on her participation, but there’s still a chance she’ll also be introduced for the upcoming game.

Game Jouhou mentions that the report comes from various sources from those who purchased early copies of Jump, so some of the information could be subject to change, but due to the many similar reports on the magazine issue, it is most likely true.

You can also check out our earlier report featuring Square Enix’s first demonstration of the game, which shows off the hero taking on a bunch of Slimes, Dracky, and Golems, while using his Super High Tension mode to wipe them all out.

The November 17-due issue of Weekly Jump will reveal the voice actors for Bianca, Nera, Jessica, and Yangus. A trailer featuring the voice cast will debut at Jump Festa in December.
In the game players can choose an area to visit on the world map, and from there get into fights by choosing a specific battle to enter. Square Enix first showcased a battle featuring Alena and Kiryl. Alena is capable of creating clones of herself, an ability that can be triggered either automatically or manually at the player’s discretion.

During combat, players can get experience points and level up. Spells and special moves are triggered by holding L1 and then pressing one of the face buttons. Standard attacks are performed with the Square and Triangle buttons, and a knockout attack is tied to the Circle button.
At the end of the map during the first battle, a Golem fight takes place, showcasing how items can be gathered by smashing pots, as well as how special moves can be pulled off after building up a gauge by pressing circle. The mission promptly ends once the Golem is defeated.
The demo moved onto a second fight featuring Alena, Meer, Terry, and Kiryl against a group of three Killer Machines. During battles, players can swap characters by pressing the R2 trigger, which will cycle through the party in order, allowing players to adopt different tactics as fights unfold. When the opposition was whittled down to just one Killer Machine, it became especially aggressive, sporting increased agility and using sweeping attacks with wide arcs. Although Alena ended up getting knocked out, Kiryl was able to revive her by approaching her and hitting circle. Meer, meanwhile, was able to pick up a mysterious trumped, which got energized and able to pull off a Giga Slash as a special attack and ending the battle summarily.

Dragon Quest creator on return to PlayStation, more

PS2 awarded Horii's most groundbreaking console award.

Famitsu this week features an interview with Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii, discussing his return to PlayStation, why PlayStation was the platform of choice for Dragon Quest Heroes, and which console he feels is the most groundbreaking ever.
Get the details below.
On being “Welcomed Back” to PlayStation by the internet:
“I was really surprised by that. People were under the impression that I hated Sony Computer Entertainment or something, but that isn’t the case at all. Like any good developer, as a staff, we just choose the right hardware for the vision that we want to accomplish and make the most of it. That’s all there is to it.”
On how PlayStation platforms were best for Dragon Quest Heroes:
“There were requests to go that route from Koei Tecmo, sure, but PlayStation 4 is also just really good at processing things at a speedy clip and making it all look pretty.”
On what he feels is the most groundbreaking console ever:
“I feel that with the PS2, we were finally able to really realize the dream of being able to run around in fully polygonal worlds wherever people liked.”
Thanks, Hachima Kikou.

Just try not to eat it if you pick one up.
The Dragon Quest Metal Slime Edition PlayStation 4 is now on sale in Japan, and Shoko Nakagawa, who voices Alena in Dragon Quest Heroes, has got one.

Nakagawa is showing it off on Twitter. Or more specifically, she’s eating it, balancing the Metal Slime included with it on her nose, and putting her cat in the box.
Check out the shots below.

If you pick up a Metal Slime Edition PlayStation 4, you’ll get a code to download Dragon Quest Heroes a day before its official Japanese release on February 25.
Thanks, Shoko Nakagawa (2, 3).

In Dragon Quest Heroes, you’ll take on hundreds, if not thousands of enemies—but don’t kill them all! As some of them will be recruitable party members. The latest issue of V Jump magazine shares more details. [Thanks, Game Jouhou.]

The summoning coins seem pretty interesting, but we don’t know whether they can be used multiple times, or if it’s a one-time use type of deal. So far, they’ve confirmed the Slime Knight, Golem, and Dracky as recruitable monsters.

Dragon Quest Heroes will release in Japan on February 26, 2015 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.
