A new Kid Icarus (Myth of Light) debuts as the premier title for Nintendo's new 3DS.

Pit was my favorite character in Brawl and this game is the reason I'm buying a 3DS. Also it's pretty awesome to see a Nintendo character have a voice.

I've longed for a 3rd Kid Icarus game since the SNES era. Had Gunpei Yoko (creator of Metroid and Kid Icarus) not been fired from Nintendo (and killed), the franchise might have been given a proper series of games, instead of taking 19 years (since Myth & Monsters, 23 since the original) for a new entry...

...so I guess I'm happy that, having waited 20+ years, this game blows away all my expectations. Seriously, no one would have imagined a new KI game playing like this! Speculation was high that any new-gen/current gen KI sequel would feel too much like a Legend of Zelda rip-off, but this game looks like it's going for a truly open-world Sin & Punishment route (which is very good).

The Game Boy family (DS included) have always been my favorite game system(s) of all time, so I was buying a 3DS, no question. Sakurai topped that sundae with a fat-ass cherry when he attached KI to it!

Masahiro Sakurai's been teasing the Nintendo faithful for years. As one of the masterminds behind the Smash Bros. fighting franchise, the game director was responsible for putting Pit, star of the old-school NES game Kid Icarus, in 2008's Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This move not only delighted fans of the plucky angel hero but it created an annual tradition where rumors of a new Kid Icarus game would pop up. It'd been 17 years between the Kid Icarus game on the Game Boy (remember those?) and Pit's appearance in SSBB, so surely something had to be coming, right? I even made this frothing desire for more Icarus the point of one of my April Fool's Day posts.



But Nintendo finally announced a new Kid Icarus game this E3 and said that it's going to be the marquee game for the new Nintendo 3DS handheld. Prior to E3, Nintendo reps reached out with an opportunity to interview a high-profile mystery developer. It wasn't until I stepped into the room that I became aware that I'd be interviewing Sakurai-san. What followed was a wide-ranging discussion about bringing back Pit, the different strengths of Western and Japanese game development and designing a title to take advantage of the specific capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS.

Really wish this was come to the Wii rather than 3DS. I've just had a really hard time getting into portable gaming after I was out of Jr. High, just rather games on my TV. Depending on how much the 3DS costs I might get it just for this game.

Completely agree. I just can't get into the handheld gaming...but I really wanna play this game Come to Wiiiiii

Nope. The President of Nintendo asked Sakurai (the lead guy behind this title) to do a launch game for the 3DS, and Kid Icarus: Uprising is it. It was, originally, going to be a StarFox game, but either way, it was never considered for the Wii.

I can't wait for this game to come out,I've been waiting for a new Kid Icarus for a while and now its here.

I'm a huge Kid Icarus fan, and I deeply adore the new designs for Pit and (especially) Medusa. I also really like the environments that were shown the other day at Nintendo World. The water, scope of the world, and sensation of flying are nothing short of stunning.

But what I don't get is why Sakurai decided to dump a random assortment of wacky, unnecessary, inappropriate weapons on Pit and essentially turn him into a Gundam. His primary weapons thus far have been rapid-fire laser weapons, with various clawed gloves or swords at times. He also has vulcan machine gun turrets that float around him auto-spamming even more lasers a la Gradius. What the hell has any of that got to do with the themes of Kid Icarus? Truly puzzling, and atmosphere/character breaking for me. I'm tremendously let down by that.

The poor ol' bow does still appear to be in the game though. I managed to notice two meager seconds of footage of it in use after scouring the original trailer like 3 times. It was quite overshadowed by all the new weapons - and continues to be according to the recent footage and demo. Here's hoping I have the option of using it and only it, for the more traditional KI experience I had been longing for.

I was grateful they weren't copying Zelda, but here they go copying Sin & Punishment/StarFox instead, with a splash of Ninja Gaiden now and then. I would've preferred a Zelda clone, I'm aggrieved to say.

God. Seriously, why is everything shooting lasers all over the place??

Would rather Team Ico create a Kid Icarus game. That would be something special, and no doubt true to character.
