Default DC vs. Marvel Video Game: OST Opinions

Howdy folks,

I might as well preface this thread with a few statements.

1) Yes there really is a DC vs. Marvel game. It is a homebrew/indie title being developed by The Scruffy Dragons. For more on that, you can visit http://www.scruffydragon.com It is only for the PC at the moment (Windows, DOS and Linux). It is not an official project.

2) I have offered to lend a helping hand to the project by creating some custom music for the characters and other elements (currently, the development team uses music from OC Remix or actual game soundtracks).

What I would like are a few opinions on the current themes I have currently crafted. The consensus at this point is that my Character Select theme is pretty solid. My Wonder Woman theme however, though appreciated, has been said to not be a good fit. I tried to capture a high level of energy while trying to embody the beauty of Wonder Woman and Themyscira. Not quite sure if I hit that mark, but commentary and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In the background of that fight clip, you can hear the music that they are currently using as Wonder Woman's stage theme. So you can see how different my musical direction is.

Well I can see why people didn't think your Themyscira theme fit very well. Themyscira is literally an ancient Greek fantasy island steeped in mythology and classicism. The stage design here even incorporates the Jimenez era version of Themyscira complete with massive, epic floating islands and warrior women. Now I'm not saying pop in John Williams and calling it a day, but your theme just doesn't have a hint of classical influences or epicness...it sounds more like something you'd hear in an upscale nightclub, very fast-paced and modern, almost sci-fi. I might even see it being a fitting theme for a character like Green Lantern.

And it might not be amiss to try and incorporate some kind of melody into your theme, instead of a single repeating motif. It's generally the tendency of western game soundtracks to be background "elevator"-type music, but people might expect to hear some kind of catchy, recognizable tune for each stage in a Capcom-influenced 2D fighting game project like this. Listen to how these games depicted each character and their personalities differently depending on different tunes and tempos and even instrument choice: Captain America, The Hulk, Psylocke. It is literally this character's theme song.

tl;dr...Think more Troy/Gladiator/Clash of the Titans and less Mass Effect: Vegas Edition. I mean, I really do hate to say this, but the version you linked that they're currently using is basically perfect.

But, erm, your stage select music is great.

I'm not a fan of the character rosters in that character select menu. Why have Superboy when there is already Superman? Why pick nobodies like Ice, Parasite, Etrigan, Plastic Man, and Lobo when there is a severe lack of Flash, Aquaman, Green Arrow, and Hawkman?

But onto the music, I would recommend doing something a bit more well....Greek for Wonder Woman. Pretty much exactly what BrianWilly said. I'm totally down for the Character Select music, it feels in tone with the Capcom fighting games

I had considered going the God of War route, but honestly, I am not sure I want to do some rock fusion with motifs lifted from Greek and Persian music. Also, I am not sure how well that fits into a fighting game. It would be like Capcom giving Captain America the Star Spangled Banner as a stage theme.

But, still, I can understand your point. I may not have to go to the extreme of essentially making a modern interpretation of what people think Greek music sounds like (e.g. Troy, God of War) but it probably would not hurt to incorporate some Greek elements. Perhaps I can find a suitable Greek instrument for an additional melody. Thank you both for the input, especially coming from two forum legends.
