I think the reason Ian helmet works better is that it was made for him. The latter magneto helmet is made to look like it fits everyone head. Ian's helmet actual shapes around his skull. The classic helmet really did come off a tad bit cheesy but I think they didn't invest too much in that 1 long sequence. The buck I think can work but they intentionally made it seem very prototype like.

*sigh* just because it's 100% accurate doesn't mean it's good, especially when translated to a realistic environment. Did you also want Magneto to wear a big metal purple suit with briefs?

I really wish they had used Ian's helmet from X2(the one in X1 is mediocre). IMO, the bucket look is cool in the comics but just looks meh on screen. It's just a big bucket over your head as opposed to McKellen's helmet which was two pieces that fit together to the head and had a really nice shape.

really?

i thought it was pretty cool and was a nice little nod to the old school/classic Magneto look

anyway, i loved Fassbender in Inglorious Bastards, but he won me over as a fan with his performance in First Class

the guy is such a badass

The first scenes with Magneto were part of Fassbender's audition tape for a James Bond movie..

I could totally see him as James Bond. I can't wait to see more of Magneto as a revolutionary in the sequel to X-men First Class. I want to see people wearing "Magneto was right" t-shirts.

Fassbender was incredible in this. I never thought a younger actor could portray the complexities of Magneto as well as Ian did but Fassbender knocked it out of the park. He also did really well to show the friendship between Charles and he in such a short amount of time. I really believed that they were the strongest of friends.

Fassbender was amazing. Seriously in my top 3 best 'villains' of all time.

I agree that Fassbender was amazing and that Magneto stole the show for me!!

What makes Magneto interesting as a villain is that, on some fundamental level, his arguments make sense and you agree with him. Fassbender really did a fantastic job in portraying the complexities of the character.

As for the helmet, they can always evolve it's look in the sequels.

and, I want to see Magento's powers evolve further in the sequels. His control over the electromagnetic spectrum is so powerful.........it's scary.

Yeah, it's like Xavier also helped Magneto become who he is now and it came back to literally bite him in the ass.

I thought Fassbender did an excellent job as 'young' Magneto. I did not care for the helmet at all though.

I'm not going to lie, for as cool as Magneto was in the film and for how badass the last scene of him recruiting Emma Frost to the Brotherhood was, his suit was ugly as hell. It didn't even fit on him right.

Well, it would've had to have been skin-tight otherwise

Was his cape gray while his helmet was purple-rimmed? Or was it just me? Because it didn't even seem color coordinated well.

Yes he did, but that title still belongs to Wesley Snipes as Blade.

Fassbender was unbelievably intense and made it so easy to sympathize with Magneto. I'm really impressed with both him and McAvoy-- they are a large part of why I found the movie so enjoyable.

I stand by my unwavering support for the helmet. Especially in the end scene. Remember that this movie takes place in 1962 not 2011, and aesthetics were different at the time. Also it was a great translation of the original Magneto helmet. However in the sequel (which is rumored to be set during the 1970s) it would be cool if it got a slightly sleeker design a little more in line with the comic costume. I'm not talking briefs over tights but maybe something close to this......

A costume more in line with the comics? Oh lord no, the colors he used at the end of this film was bad enough. The muted McKellen costume is far more appropriate imo. From the black suit to the elegant cape that connected to the rest of his suit. Instead he gets a red jacket and a purple bucket on his head.

Please no large metal purple collar around Magneto's neck. If it were up to some of you guys, Alfred Molina would have worn green and orange spandex in Spider-Man 2.

the more things stay the same...

I want them to stick to their guns and keep the color palette bright and comic book style for a little while longer..

Did anyone else like the look that Shaw had with the suit/helmet combo. I'm not talking about liking Shaw in the helmet, just the look that he had. I hope Magneto has something close to this in the next movie.

I don't really like the cape. After watching Magneto run around in street clothes, wetsuits and x-men uniforms I just don't picture him as a "cape" kind of guy. Ah well, I'm still eager to see the next one and what they do with the costumes...

I think it has to do with being in the 60's. Things look good back then but not now. Remember Magneto has the color change to red at the end and add horn, he can have the horn out by early 90's. May be he will have shoulder's pad in his uniform in the 80's, inspired by Boy George.
