Default What if Scarface were remade again?

I wanted this as a seperate thread because seeing as how Hollywood is going bonkers with remakes/reboots and the 1983 Al Pacino classic was already a remake of another Scarface film from the 50's.

Keep in mind that the 1983 film was a product of it's time so cocaine/drugs/money were the order of the day, what ideas and thoughts could a possible remake be in todays society?

There was a comic book a few years back I think in which Tony somehow survived and decided to take revenge on Sosa, the are was crappy so I don't know how that turned out.

Is there a Tony Montana in all of us? how would he go about to become a success?

I think Pacino's Tony Montana is so iconic that I can't see anyone redoing that interpretation again. The movie is pure 80s and pure cheese, and that's why people love it. It is a time capsule of that era. And people love the 80s, especially kids these days. It was the last decade that had a distinct look.

If all else, they may go with another character not Tony Montana.

If they made another one, I don't know if it's gonna any cultural mark because the story has been told twice already. One man's rise to power and his downfall. And that story has been told again and again already in other movies too. But I think both Scarface(s) were the pinnacle of THAT narrative.

If they choose to remake Scarface again, I hope it does not become a negro anthem like the Pacino version.

Exactly how the hell is it a "negro" athem? Why did you have to use "negro" in the first place?

There was talk a few years ago of a remake of Scarface, and it had the blessing of Pacino, he believed the story should be retold every few generations.

I couldn't see myself being too interested in it. I hate how rappers have embraced this film and I think if they remake it, it would be centered around hip hop and ****. No Paul Engemann, no deal.

The comic book sounds like the video game. I never got to beat it before my PS2 stopped saving but they somehow made that game work.

I have had the displeasure of listening to countless rappers and little black kids always talk of Tony Montana as a role model. It is an ignorant sentiment that seems to plague alot of the younger generations, from my stand point. These people always talk about Tony Montana as some great man who took no **** and rose to power because of it. It is often overlooked that he was a coldblooded killer that lost everything of value and died a lonely shell of a man, so when I hear young kids say they want to be him then I can't help but shake my head. That is like when a young black girl said that her role model was Superhead. Not Condoleeza Rice, not Ella Fitzgerald, not even Oprah, but the biggest whore in hip hop.

Now, I used to love Scarface when I was younger. Not because I was inspired by him, but because it gave me a hard look on the reality of the drug life. It is blood and short. Money is temporary and ever fleeting. There is no happy end to overambition.

And I use the word negro, because I am not allowed to say the other word which I use as a synonym for ignorance.

What the difference with rappers and scarface from the people that dress up like the joker, or the adults that find a shirtless 17 year old attractive. I mean hell, the only reason you wont say "the other word" is because you know you just might get banned for it. And dont give me that bull that all "negroes" use that word, I dont. So when you can gett off your high horse, and talk in more professional manner, you and I have nothing else to discuss. I guess you could say a "******" typed this to you.

1932. And a damn great movie in its own right directed by Howard Hawks.

I too am a little sickened by the Hip Hop community raising Scarface on a pedastal; especially since gangsta's like him openly despised us blacks to begin with. You can just check out The Sopranos for how organizations like The Mafia views us Blacks.........

......anyhow, i seriously doubt they'll re-do Scareface. It'll be like re-making Gone With The Wind, or The God-Father; it'll be like trying to re-invent the wheel.

Truth or not, it's bull to call a film liked by African Americans a "negro" film.

So a few rappers and some little black kids officially made Scarface the "negro anthem" in your mind? Generalize much?

Is their any real point in making another Scarface, ignoring the fact the first one is SO iconic, it is a movie very much about the eighties and it's obsession with greed, consumerism and social status... The times we're living in now arent anywhere near that bad.

Also:

How exactly do you remake Scarface for a generation buried deep in a global financial recession? Tony could never become what he became in the 10's...

I believe it's been embraced more by rap singers not because it's a "negro" film but because most rap stars grew up in poverty and can relate to coming from nothing to rising to fame or power in the case of Tony Montana.

And I agree that most kids look up to Scarface for all the wrong reasons, sure Tony is a badass but he was a criminal first.

i think the whole point of Scarface isn't his rise, but his self destruction due to power and wealth. So it tends to get misinterpreted by some in the Hip Hop Community.

Exactly. The film is about Tony's downfall. How power corrupts.

I'm guessing you are black, if not then you are just soft hearted. Obviously my post has offended you to the point that you failed to comprehend anything I wrote. Never did I say that Scarface is a negro anthem because it is liked by black people. I said that black people ignore the message of Scarface. Not ALL black people, since I am here making the argument, but an overwhelming number from my point of view. They idolize him as a hero, someone to be inspired by just because he gained money and power. I call Scarface a negro anthem it is a shout of ignorance among black people who use him as a role model.

I suggest you stop letting racism cloud your judgement, only then will you see that it is not to be found here.

Well you really had nothing intelligent to say

Seriously though, you called Scarface a negro anthem based on a few rappers and some little black kids. How many rappers or little black kids does it take to make Scarface a negro anthem in your mind? What's your sample size? 5? 10? 20? What kind of number are you generalizing with?
