I wanted this as a seperate thread because seeing as how Hollywood is going bonkers with remakes/reboots and the 1983 Al Pacino classic was already a remake of another Scarface film from the 50's.
Keep in mind that the 1983 film was a product of it's time so cocaine/drugs/money were the order of the day, what ideas and thoughts could a possible remake be in todays society? There was a comic book a few years back I think in which Tony somehow survived and decided to take revenge on Sosa, the are was crappy so I don't know how that turned out. Is there a Tony Montana in all of us? how would he go about to become a success?

I think Pacino's Tony Montana is so iconic that I can't see anyone redoing that interpretation again. The movie is pure 80s and pure cheese, and that's why people love it. It is a time capsule of that era. And people love the 80s, especially kids these days. It was the last decade that had a distinct look.
If all else, they may go with another character not Tony Montana. If they made another one, I don't know if it's gonna any cultural mark because the story has been told twice already. One man's rise to power and his downfall. And that story has been told again and again already in other movies too. But I think both Scarface(s) were the pinnacle of THAT narrative.

If they choose to remake Scarface again, I hope it does not become a negro anthem like the Pacino version.

There was talk a few years ago of a remake of Scarface, and it had the blessing of Pacino, he believed the story should be retold every few generations.

I couldn't see myself being too interested in it. I hate how rappers have embraced this film and I think if they remake it, it would be centered around hip hop and ****. No Paul Engemann, no deal.
The comic book sounds like the video game. I never got to beat it before my PS2 stopped saving but they somehow made that game work. |

Now, I used to love Scarface when I was younger. Not because I was inspired by him, but because it gave me a hard look on the reality of the drug life. It is blood and short. Money is temporary and ever fleeting. There is no happy end to overambition. And I use the word negro, because I am not allowed to say the other word which I use as a synonym for ignorance. |

......anyhow, i seriously doubt they'll re-do Scareface. It'll be like re-making Gone With The Wind, or The God-Father; it'll be like trying to re-invent the wheel.

Truth or not, it's bull to call a film liked by African Americans a "negro" film. |

Is their any real point in making another Scarface, ignoring the fact the first one is SO iconic, it is a movie very much about the eighties and it's obsession with greed, consumerism and social status... The times we're living in now arent anywhere near that bad.
Also: How exactly do you remake Scarface for a generation buried deep in a global financial recession? Tony could never become what he became in the 10's... |

And I agree that most kids look up to Scarface for all the wrong reasons, sure Tony is a badass but he was a criminal first.

i think the whole point of Scarface isn't his rise, but his self destruction due to power and wealth. So it tends to get misinterpreted by some in the Hip Hop Community.

Exactly. The film is about Tony's downfall. How power corrupts.

Seriously though, you called Scarface a negro anthem based on a few rappers and some little black kids. How many rappers or little black kids does it take to make Scarface a negro anthem in your mind? What's your sample size? 5? 10? 20? What kind of number are you generalizing with? |
