Great article, I agree with him wholeheartedly.

I always saw Superman as an inspirational and aspirational figure. A person we should look up to and try to emulate as much as we can. Yes being upstanding, virtuous and always being honorable and doing the right thing is tough.

Maybe seeing him shines a light on many people's insecurities about their own personal choices, who knows. Having the resources or the opportunity to do whatever you want is one thing, but being able to use discipline and do only what is right is a bit more challenging.

Superman is not outdated and will always be relevant if you have the wisdom to see and comprehend what he truly is. It’s not about a man in blue and red tights. It’s about us. It’s about right and wrong. Sometimes the concepts can be or sound cheesy or annoying, but they’re always important. There is no greater lesson to be learned than that of integrity.
Superman’s ethics, ideals, look, powers, haircut, and mythology may all seem like they don’t fit into the modern era of superhero culture, and that is exactly what makes him the single most important part of it.
I swear, it's like being in a world full of nutcases, and then finding the one other sane person out there.

Superman is, and always will be, my favourite hero.

I don't really care that people think he's a boyscout and call him names. Because Superman wouldn't care. Superman would still save every one of their lives without question, and would do it with absolute integrity. He deserves respect, but people are always going to be afraid of what they don't understand.

It is indeed a very good article. I cannot add nothing to that opinion, only here to support it. I guess many comic book fans become "Lex Luthor" by the reasons stated on the article.

Good read. I agree with most of it. The world needs Superman. He has taught us so much over the years. Take away his powers and just have the man and he is still the type of person everyone of us should strive to be. there was a time in the world when we all thought like he does. But somewhere along the way we lost sight of what is really important. The people of today live in fear of the unknown, and look down on their fellow man. There are stories everyday of people just standing back and watching while someone else is attacked or killed. We don't help each other anymore unless there is something in it for us. If only Superman could be real and teach us how we should act. I pray that people start reading his books again and watching the movies. Maybe just maybe we will see the light and even from the world of fiction Superman can guide us and show us the path we should take. The world needs a Superman.

indeed. Superman can still be portrayed as representing some of todays challenges and issues: he's, when you think of it, an immigrant, who's trying to fit in, and be an example, even when people in power are not (which is like most of times). He's strugeling with the complexities of our modern world, as we all are.

interesting read there. as for superman and him being relevant, i think he still is. all we need is a good story, solid actors on board, and they treat the character in the right manner, and superman could be top grossing hero and fans could enjoy new and exciting stories.

What a great read! It really makes most of the threads in this forum embarrasingly irrelevant. I'm embarrased myself here for being too focused on the costume- and casting-threads.

The article mentions that Superman is not a god. But what is a god really? Couldn't GOD himself just as well be an extra terrestrial like Superman? Oh well...

All that Superman stands for and his actions are timeless, if you're looking to update the "blue boyscout".
He's an alien, regardless of his "human" intentions, and as such we shouldn't question his motivations. The Kryptonians are a massively evolved and supposedly harmonic race compared to us, so theoretically they have no physical and culturel similarities to us. It should be self-explanatory.
Superman exists on a different plane alltogether. For instance, he wouldn't necessarily understand the concept of war. Actually, he reminds me of another iconic do-good'er who was human though, but had the same kinda background and intentions. You might've heard of him. Jebus.. Jesus-something.

Anyways, this Longstreth really makes some valid points. And puts some interesting perspectives on it. I may have missed out on it in the comicbooks(I haven't read Superman in a looong time), but the angle on Superman's superiority affecting the world really should have a VERY relevant part in the upcoming movie. If Nolan sees this and it's possibilities he could potentially make a movie just as dark as his Batman-flicks and even dwarf them in relevance and importance. And like the article points out, the super-villains and the spectacular almost seem unimportant here.
I'd personally love to see an origin done with Superman being feared in the beginning as described in the article. His introduction-scene could be pretty grand with a mass hysteria sort of scenario.
After all, human or not, he's still very much an alien, which hasn't really been played upon in any of the movies. An alien with godlike powers should create a new angle to the Superman mythos. Add to that a realistic approach to how mankind would react to that scenario I think Nolan could shine here.

I could see it now, Superman addressing the nation somehow, who's asking him to solve a whole bunch of problems here and offshore:

«I must make this clear: it is not out of lack of care, that I do not solve all that threatens us. It is precisely because i care deeply about it all. If the world would rally and gather their will toward peace, you could collectively accomplish more than I ever could. And so my «inaction» stems from hope and faith, that I can be but a source of guidance, and land a hand when needed. Thank you.» (he then flies away).

Superman caries the heaviest burden: the power to fix a lot of things, but the imperative of restraint, and the necessity to act wisely and to decide when he should and shouldn't act. If Nolan brings this on screen, Superman will be more relevant than EVER.

That would be a great moment and it would be a delight to see a more determined and mature Superman who would just embrace his fate and didn't try to hide from the public.
