For the most part, the X-Men can get away with not having a standard look because their attire and appearances have been changing so more often than the rest to the point where you'll have the storytelling and the tone to dictate their look.
True, and one can argue that the way in which the X-Men were introduced to audiences for the first time in 2000 falls much more in line with the logic of and the way the X-Men were introduced to readers for the first time in 1963. That is, the X-Men are an underground strike force with team uniforms that aren't individualized or overly flashy. Personally, I would like to see something fresh and more in line with their original uniforms or their First Class uniforms. I think we've seen enough of the black leather and colored piping for now.

If the X-Men were formed in the 60's (in these films), then it would make more sense..

But, since that doesn't seem to be the case, I would not expect anything exactly like what we've seen in the comics from their original appearance. I would, however expect...like I've said, a fair middleground.

I know I was just stating how sick I'm of the Overcoat being the directors standard costume especially for villains. Even in the new Star Terk movie. Theres no imagination anymore in Hollywood.

Doc Ock, Nightcrawler, Joker, the devil in Ghost rider. Damn those overcoats!

and each one of them made sense.

Nightcrawler and Doc Ock were trying to be inconspicuous.

The Joker is a crazy criminal and criminals wear stuff like that.

^and the same goes for Mephistopheles...

I think the overcoat thing on Victor Creed in Wolverine was a little tacky, but I guess that's why they threw in that little jab in that scene with him and Wraith. I guess they put it on Creed to make him look more dangerous, to make Liev look a little bigger, and maybe to sell his "transition" after the first act.

Don't forget Angel tried to hide his wings under a coat as well! I don't think any of those examples took away from the characters, as they all made sense in their own way, as TNC already stated. I mean, even Jean's Dark Phoenix coat-thing worked out well, so as long as Spiderman isn't wearing one in the reboot, or we do literally get a whole team of superheroes wearing cloaks, then I think it's far from overkill to have a character or two wearing a similar article of clothing.

^Of course. Matter of fact,I would be fine with Jean Grey being the only one wearing one of those.

I liked the black leather, but they have to bring us something new this time. The uniforms always evolve. X-Men in black leather in the 60's just doesn't make much since to me. Storm's flight suit in X3 showed that they can go in a different direction without being cheesy.

All they have to do is turn the black leather dark blue and turn the black gloves and boots a dark gold color..
