The 90's in general kinda built this need for a darker look and feel for the comicbook movies. We had Blade, Spawn, The Crow and even the first Ninja Turtles movie was pretty dark (or as dark as a movie about giant fighting turtles could be). I mean, we even got a dark-ish Mario Bros movie, which turned out ridiculous, but the point is that the 90's was all about trying to turn these everyday household properties by giving them an edge, so it was natural for the X-Men movie to reflect that. If you've read Andrew Kevin Walker's script for the X-Men movie, the movie we got definitely toned down some of the ridiculous elements that the 90's culture to give us a much better end-product.

If the movie had followed Spider-Man, then maybe we would have a more accurate depiction of the comic, but I really think that what we got in the first X-Men, and again in X2 was something so different that comparing it to the comics is almost unfair - it's basically the Ultimate universe before there ever was such a thing, so while it had elements in common to the comics, it had to go in its own direction to gain a general audience, and it obviously succeeded in that right.

So, yeah, now that we have movies like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Watchmen, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, etc. with costumes close to the source material, it's easy to look at the X-Men movies and complain, but the X-Men movie was what started the whole big bang of comic movies in this past decade, so it was risky for Bryan Singer and crew to go all out with gold and blue costumes, when they only really had Batman, Spawn, and Blade as a lead-in. They could've taken that risk and gone more colorful, but it worked out for three movies, and now we're going to get to turn back the clock and see what could've been. I just don't want to hear the fallout from the fans who think they should've stuck with the black leather

I think the Black and Gold look would look great and Superheroesque.

I think tone will have a lot to do with how well the costumes might be done. With a movie like Watchmen, you the black leather with bright yellow worked really well, but if First Class is tonally similar to X-Men and X-2 (which is what reports have been saying), then it might be hard to swallow comic accurate costumes.

But it's also a period piece set in the 60s.

But ,Watchmen's darker than X1 and 2 and it's the 60's like Deaths Head II said.

from what I've seen from Layer Cake and Kick-Ass, Matthew has a great eye for colors, and his movies are beautiful in terms of color pallete. So i'm kinda thinking we'll have cool costumes.

Yeah, I have trouble seeing Vaughn going for the all black leather outfits.

the only thing I'm dreading is his use of songs in his movies. I mean, I loved LOVED Ordinary World in Layer Cake, and the kiddy song (Ramones? no clue) when Hit Girl goes on a killing spree...but I'm not sure it would work in an X-Men movie.

I don't think they'd let him use this though. Even though I love it in other movies. But not X-Men please.

For this film I'm sure Vaughn will go for a very different style. Probably with a lot of 60s music considering the time period.

The song for the Hitgirl scene is the theme song from a 70's kid show about a band of animals calling themselves the banana splits, I think.

Which is funny since he's color blind. But, from my experience people who are color blind always have a better sense of color.

I know, I own them all. I was just stating that because it's a period piece, the costume designs might be a tricky aspect to nail. Do they go crazy and make the costumes reflect the times, or do they do what's right by the plot of the movie when the X-Men suit up? I mean, would anybody be demanding a blood sacrifice if Emma is seen without a pillbox hat on? Or will they just accept what they see because it helps the story along, without being dragged down with decade (and comic) accurate attire?

I'd actually like the black and yellow with a big ole' fat, yellow 'X' going across the suit.

It wouldn't surprise me if there aren't any costumes in this movie. This is a prequel of sorts.

Well, The White Queen certainly looks like her comic counterpart.

They already said there are going to be more comic accurate costumes in this film.

If not yellow then perhaps a more beige like palette!

I think the whole franchise should have an evolution in terms of uniforms.

We've seen the blue&yellow uniforms on First Class, they still have two more sequels to show the evolution to the black leather, so we still can see some colour on the sequel to FC.

And in the last movie, to show a mix of the b&y uniforms and the black ones from X1-X3.

It would make sense. and would seem natural.

Maybe the blue was not as blue as the comic book costumes, but compared to the blandness of the black costumes in the original movies the blue and yellow of the First Class costumes really popped out and were aesthetically improved.
